Have you ever heard of the famous wrestlers from Mexico? “Lucha libre” means
“free-style fighting” and in some ways is similar to other kinds of wrestling around the
world. But in Mexico, many “luchadores” (wrestlers) wear special masks to hide their
identity. With fantastic tricks and gymnastics stunts, the wrestlers face off in a ring.
There are two types of luchadores: ‘rudos’ and ‘écnicos.’ The word ‘rudos’ means bad guys. These
fighters often break the rules of the game. The écnicos are the good guys; they play by the rules, and
have much more complex and spectacular moves. The good guy and bad guy roles are an
important feature of lucha libre, and make it different from other types of wrestling.
To win, they have to pin down their opponent for three seconds. Sometimes the loser
has to take off his or her mask and reveal their face!

In Mexico City, thousands of fans come to the Arena México to watch their

favorite men and women luchadores. Lucha libre is also common in
