MECH 205 STATICS

FALL 2017
HOMEWORK 1

1. The ring weighs 50 N and is in equilibrium. The force F1 = 45 N. Determine the magnitude of the
force F2 and the angle α.

2. Cable AB is 3 m long and cable BC is 4 m long. Points A and C are at the same height. The mass of
the suspended object is 350 kg. Determine the tensions in cables AB and BC.

3. In Pr. 2, we take the length of cable AB as adjustable. Cable BC is 4 m long. If we don’t want the
tension in either cable AB or cable BC to exceed 3 kN, what is the minimum acceptable length of
cable AB?

4. Determine the magnitude and direction of the force F = (650 N)i - (320 N)j + (760 N)k.

5. Find the magnitude and direction of the resultant of the two forces shown knowing that P = 450 N
and Q = 600 N.

6. Collar A is connected to a 200 N load which can slide on a frictionless horizontal rod. If x = 200 mm
determine P in order to maintain equilibrium of the collar.
