Answer all the five questions (2 x 5 = 10 marks)

1. State Lame’s theorem.

In statics, Lami's theorem is an equation relating the magnitudes of
three coplanar, concurrent and non-collinear forces, which keeps an object in static
equilibrium, with the angles directly opposite to the corresponding forces. According to
the theorem,

where A, B and C are the magnitudes of three coplanar, concurrent and non-collinear

forces, which keep the object in static equilibrium, and
α, β and γ are the angles directly opposite to the forces A, B and C respectively.

Lami's theorem is applied in static analysis of mechanical and structural systems. The
theorem is named after Bernard Lamy.

2. Distinguish the following types of forces with suitable sketch: a) concurrent coplanar b)
Parallel

A concurrent coplanar force system is a system of two or more

forces whose lines of action ALL intersect at a common point.
However, all of the individual vectors might not acutally be in
contact with the common point. These are the most simple force
systems to resolve with any one of many graphical or algebraic options.
A parallel coplanar force system consists of two or more forces whose
lines of action are ALL parallel. This is commonly the situation when
simple beams are analyzed under gravity loads. These can be solved
graphically, but are combined most easily using algebraic methods.

3. A man has a mass of 72 kg is standing on a board inclined 200 with the horizontal. Find
the component of man’s weight
(a) Perpendicular to the plane of the board = 72x9.81x cos200 = 663.72 N

(b) Parallel to the plane of the board = 72x9.81x sin 200 = 241.57 N

4. Compute the moment of 200 N force about points A and B

Resolve 200 N into Fx and Fy.

Fx = 200 cos 45 Fy = 200 sin 45
MA = Fx X 4 + Fy X 10
MB = Fx X 4 + Fy X 10

5. What are the common types of supports used in two dimensions?

(a) Roller support
(b) Hinged support
(c) Fixed support

6. A mass of 45 kg is suspended by a rope from a ceiling. The mass is pulled by a horizontal
force until the rope makes an angle of 700 with the ceiling. Find the horizontal force and
the tension in the rope. (8 marks)

9. A 3000 N vertical force is applied to the end of a lever which is attached to a shaft at O as
shown in fig. Determine i) moment of 3000 N force abt O. ii) the magnitude of the
horizontal force applied at A which creates the same amount about O. iii) the smallest
force applied at A, which creates the same moment about O. iv) How far from the shaft a

Mo = 3000 X OB = 900 Nm
900 = F x AB F = 1734.1 N
For the smallest force of same moment, distance between the line of action of the force
and the point O is maximum i.e .6 m and the force sh’d be perpendicular to the line OA.
F X OA = 900 F = 1500 N
Distance of vertical force from O to have the same moment
750 X x = 900 x = 1.2 m

10. The three forces and a couple of magnitude M = 18 N are applied to an angled bracket as
shown in fig.

Whatever be the magnitude and nature of couple M, it will not affect the magnitude and
direction of resultant force
Location of resultant force:
Ma = 200 X0.2 – (125 sin 60 X0.3) -18 = -10.475 Nm
Let perpendicular distance of resultant force from A be x m

Ha = 5.53 N
Ha is positive therefore assumed direction is correct.
Fy = Va + Vb – 50 sin 70 -30 – 18 50 -6 = 0
Va + Vb = 96.77 N

Ma = 30 X 200 + 18 sin 50 X 350 + 6 X 950 – Vb X 1000 = 0
Vb = 15.02 N
