PROJECT PROPOSAL

PROCESS DESIGN AND ENGINEERING

FOR
SETTING UP OF MANUFACTURING FACILITY FOR SODIUM BOROHYDRITE -SBH IN
INDIA

1. Introduction
Sodium borohydride, also known as sodium tetrahydridoborate and sodium
tetrahydroborate, is an inorganic compound with the formula N aBH4 . This white solid,
usually encountered as a powder, is a reducing agent that finds application in chemistry,
both in the laboratory and on an industrial scale. The compound is soluble in alcohols,
certain ethers, and water, although it slowly hydrolyzes. It also reacts with these protic
solvents to produce H2 ; however, these reactions are fairly slow. It decomposes in neutral
or acidic aqueous solutions but is stable at pH 14. Sodium borohydride (N aBH4 ) is a
versatile reducing agent used in a number of industrial processes. Major applications
include organic and pharmaceutical synthesis, wastewater treatment, and paper pulp
bleaching. Additionally, N aBH4 can be used to store and generate hydrogen gas via a
hydrolysis reaction. It is estimated that in order for sodium borohydride to be widely utilized
as an energy storage medium in a hydrogen economy, the cost must be reduced by at least
an order of magnitude from its present price. The manufacturing process of N aBH4 has
largely remained the same since it became commercial in the 1950s and is based on
synthetic pathways developed by Brown and Schlesinger.
This proposal is prepared as per the requirements of KCC INFRA PRIVATE
LIMITED(KCCIPL),C-20/A, AMBABARI,JAIPUR-302023, RAJASTHAN, INDIA.
