Scripted Shutdown Using The CLI

If you want to script powering off a DS8000 storage unit you can use the chsu -
pwroff DSCLI command. This command will shut down and power off the specified
DS8000 unit. Be careful before powering off the unit to ensure that all I/O activity has
been stopped. An example of the command is shown below. Your machine will have a
different IP address, password and serial number to mine. Note the serial number
always ends in zero because we send the command to the storage unit.

dscli -hmc1 10.1.60.240 -user admin -passwd passw0rd chsu -pwroff -dev
IBM.2107-75DC710

It takes over a minute before you will see any change in the machine. So be patient. The
units takes 10-15 minutes to shut down. If the system encounters any issues to as part of
the power down, it can take up to 90 minutes. The HMC will not power off. You can
either leave it powered on or shut it down manually.

To power the DS8000 back on, use the chsu –pwron command:

dscli -hmc1 10.1.60.240 -user admin -passwd passw0rd chsu -pwron -dev
IBM.2107-75DC710

Shutdown Procedure Using the HMC

Depending on the version of HMC software these are two methods

Procedure One

1. In the navigation, select Host > System Status. On the System Status — Main Page,
select the storage unit that you want to power on or off.
2. In the Action drop-down list, select Storage Unit > Power Control. The Storage Unit
Power Control page is displayed.
3. Set the remote control mode to Manual.
4. Under Manual Control select Power on or Power off. A confirmation message is
displayed. If you want to proceed, click OK.
Procedure Two

1. Power off the storage facility.

a. From the navigation area, click Storage Facility Management > storage facility.
b. From the bottom Task area, click Service Utilities > Storage Facility Power
Control. The Power Control window opens.

c. In the upper left, ensure that the Current Remote Power Control Mode is set
to Manual.
Note If the mode is not set to Manual, select Manual Power Mode from the Power
Control Modes section.
d. In the Change Storage Facility Power State section, click Power OFF Storage
Facility, and then click OK.
e. Click OK to confirm the update for the Power Control Settings.
The storage facility will now begin the power off sequence.
2. Wait a maximum of 10 minutes for the storage facility power off sequence to complete.
The sequence is complete when the storage enclosures/DDMs are off, and the green
LED is slow flashing on both CEC enclosure control panels.
Physically switch the unit off
At the rear of each rack in the storage facility, switch off the mainline power
CB00 (Figure 5) on both primary power supplies (PPS).

Verify that all input power has been removed from each rack. At the front of both PPSs in each
rack, ensure the AC INPUT GOOD LED indicator is off.

In Figure 6, the Model 941/94E is shown; the Model 951/95E is similar.

For model 98x, three-phase power, at the rear of each rack in the storage facility, set
the main line switch CB1 (Figure 9) to Off (down) on both DC-UPS.
