CSA Tests and Results – All CSA tests witnessed by Ana Adari, P. Eng. of
CSA International (CSA Master File Number: LR19310)

Standards: CSA C22.2 No. 14-95 Industrial Control Equipment

UL 508C Power Conversion Equipment
CSA C22.2 No. 0.4M Grounding and Bonding of Electrical Equipment

Temperature CSA C22.2 No. 14 Cl. 6.2 & UL 508C Sec. 40

Test requires that an ETU (Engineering Test Unit) be operated at rated conditions until
thermal stabilization occurs. Thermal stabilization is considered obtained when three
consecutive readings, taken 10 minutes apart, do not indicate a change in temperature of +/-
1ºC between any of the three consecutive readings.

Temperature test produced acceptable results that met the temperature limits specified in
Table 14 of CSA C22.2 No. 14 and Table 39.1 of UL 508C.

Clogged Filter UL 508C Sec. 41.5

Test requires that an ETU having filtered ventilation openings is to be operated with the
openings blocked to simulate clogged filters. The ETU must be tested under two conditions:
1) 50% blocked; 2) 100% blocked. Both tests are conducted until ETU reaches thermal
stabilization or until a protective device operates.

1. 50% blocked test: ETU was operated until thermal stabilization occurred. Temperature test
produced acceptable results that met the temperature limits specified in Table 14 of CSA
C22.2 No. 14 and Table 39.1 of UL 508C.

2. 100% blocked test: Test was performed in conjunction with the Inoperative Fan test. ETU
was operated, a protective device activated and “there was no evidence of a risk of fire or
electric shock.”

Inoperative Fan UL 508C Sec. 41.4

Test requires that an ETU with forced ventilation be operated with its fans disabled.
With the consent of CSA, the test was performed with all fans disabled at one time and was
also combined with the 100% clogged (blocked) filter test to simulate a worst-case condition.
Test is to be conducted until ETU reaches thermal stabilization or until a protective device
operates.

ETU was operated, a protective device activated and “there was no evidence of a risk of fire
or electric shock.”
Single Phase UL 508C Sec. 41.3
Test requires that three-phase power conversion equipment be operated with one phase
disconnected. The test consists of two parts: 1) one phase is to be disconnected with the ETU
operating and 2) attempt to restart the ETU with one phase disconnected. Tests are to be
conducted until ETU reaches thermal stabilization or until a protective device operates.

1. Phase B was disconnected with the ETU operating. A protective device activated and
“there was no evidence of a risk of fire or electric shock.”

2. A restart of the ETU was attempted with Phase B disconnected. A protective device
activated and “there was no evidence of a risk of fire or electric shock.”

Dielectric Strength CSA C22.2 No. 14 Cl. 6.8 & UL 508C Sec. 44
Test requires that an ETU withstand for one minute, without breakdown, the
application of a 60 Hz sinusoidal potential between the bare live parts of the power circuit
and the grounded enclosure. The applied potential is based on 2.25 times rated voltage plus
2000 for devices rated between 751 V to 1500 V.

A potential of 4250 VAC was applied for one minute. No breakdown occurred.

Component Breakdown UL 508C Sec. 50

Test requires that an ETU not emit flame or molten metal when capacitors, diodes or
other solid-state devices are open- or short-circuited. The component selected (a line filter
capacitor) was agreed upon by CSA and GE.

The capacitor was shorted and AC power was applied to the ETU. A protective device
activated and “there was no evidence of a risk of fire or electric shock.”

Enclosure Ground Test CSA C22.2 No. 0.4 Cl. 4.1

Test is used to insure the adequacy of an enclosures ground in the event that non-
current-carrying parts become energized. Test consists of passing a current equal to the
devices rating from a part intended to be grounded to the grounding terminal. The current is
to be applied for 10 minutes and at the conclusion of the test the measured potential drop
multiplied by the fuse rating and then divided by 250 shall not exceed 4 V.

A potential of 2300 ADC was passed through the proper points. After the 10 minute period a
potential drop was measured and using the formula above, the calculated potential drop was
less than the limit of 4 V.

Short Circuit CSA C22.2 No. 14 Cl. 6.10 & UL 508C Sec. 45
Test requires that an ETU shall withstand an output short circuit without creating
potentially dangerous conditions.

ETU passed all applicable short circuit tests with no visible damage. A protective device
activated and “there was no evidence of a risk of fire or electric shock.”

Short circuit ratings:

77 mm SCRs: 50 kA up to 1000 VAC, 3 phase, 60 Hz input

53 mm SCRs: 35 kA up to 1000 VAC, 3 phase, 60 Hz input

Low Voltage Directive (LVD) Test Summary

The following tests were performed in addition to the CSA / UL testing to prove compliance
to the Low Voltage Directive.

Standard: EN 50178 Electronic equipment for use in power installations

Vibration Test EN 50178 Cl. 9.4.3.2

Test requires that a representative sample be submitted to the vibration test specified
below:

Sinusoidal motion with a displacement of 0.075 mm from 10 to 57 Hz and 1 G from 57 to 150

Hz. The test has duration of 10 sweep cycles on each of three mutually perpendicular axes.

ETU completed the vibration test without any visible damage. ETU also passed a post
vibration operation test witnessed by CSA International. Post operation test was an exact
repeat of the pre- vibration operation test.

Acoustic Noise EN 50178 Cl. A.4.7

Test requires that acoustic noise measurements of the ETU be taken at various heights
and distances from the ETU. If a noise level of 70 dBA is taken, a warning label must be place
on the product.
