What is Particle
• A particle in Japanese is a word that shows the
relationship of a word, a phrase or a clause to
the rest of the sentence.
• Particles are an important part of Japanese
sentence structure.

• わたし = I
• マイク・ミラー = Mike Miller
• は = topic marker
• です = am

• 「さん」 Is added to the given name of the listener or a third
person to show the speaker’s respect to that person. It should
never be used with the speaker’s own name.
• あの 方(かた)は ミラーさんです。
That person is Mr. Miller.
• 鈴木(すずき): ミラーさんは 学生(がくせい)ですか。
Suzuki: Are you a student?
ミラー: いいえ、 会社員(かいしゃいん)です。
Miller: No, I work for a company.
[Note] あなた is used to address someone with whom one is
very familiar, such as one’s husband, wife, romantic partner,
etc. Be careful about using it in other situations, as it can
sound impolite.
〈Noun〉 + じゃ(では) ありません
• To negative a statement of the form
N1 は N2です ,where N1 is a Noun,
you place です with じゃ ありません。
• じゃ ありません is the negative form of
です。
* では ありません is used in formal speech and writing.
[Note] The は in では is pronounced わ. While じゃ
ありません is used more in daily conversation.

• じゃ(では) ありません = isn’t

• 銀行員(ぎんこういん)=bank employee
Question marker か
• 「か」 (ka) is a question marker
• Put at the end of a sentence to mark it as a
question.
• Used to express the speaker’s doubt, question
etc.
• ワンさんは 学生(がくせい)ですか。

Note:
It is obvious from the situation that you are the one speaking (わ
たし) and you are talking to someone (あなた) so you don‘t need
to state the subject of “I” or “you” all the while. Notice that you
don’t have to use わたし and あなた but you still can guess the
subject too. In English it won't make any sense since the subjects
are missing but in Japanese, it is totally normal.
