Example:
それは じしょ です か? Is that a dictionary? (Pointing the object near the listener)
これ を ください。 I’ll take this. (Pointing the object near the speaker)
あれは なん です か? What is that over there? (Pointing the object far from both)

このN・そのN・あのN
-These patterns are use to modify nouns.
- この+N Refers to a thing NEAR the SPEAKER.
- それ+N Refers to a thing NEAR the LISTENER.
- あれ+N Refers to a thin FAR from the SPEAKER and LISTENER.
Examples:
このほんは わたし のです。
(N)
This book is mine.
あのかたはどなたですか。
(N)
Who is that [person]?

そうじゃ ありません
Examples:
Q: それは でんき の ほん です か? Is that a book about Electricity?
A: はい、そうです。 Yes it is
Q: あれは ミラーさん の かばん です か? Is that bag of Mr. Miller?
A: いいえ、そうじゃ ありません。 No it isn’t
Note:
You can replace そうじゃ ありません with ちがいます。
Sample: いいえ、ちがいます。 (Equal in saying いいえ、そうじゃ ありません)

- This is a question asking the listener to CHOOSE between alternatives.
Example:
Q: これは「9」ですか、「7」ですか? Is this a “9” or a “7”?
A: 「9」です。 it is 9.
そうですか
-This expression is used when the speaker received new information and shows
that he or she understands it.
Example:
Speaker A: このかさはあなたのですか? Is this umbrella yours?
Speaker B:いいえ、ちがいます。ワントさんのです。No, it’s Mr. Wanto.
Speaker A:そうですか。 I see.

Note:
N2 is sometimes omitted when it is obvious. But you cannot omit if it means
a person.
Q: あれは だれのかばんですか? Who owns that bag?
A: ミラーさんのです。 It is Mr. Miller’s (Omitted version)
