Mechanics of Materials
(재료역학)
School of Naval Architecture & Ocean Engineering
Prof. Hyoung-Seock Seo
Introduction <2>

❑ What is ‘Mechanics of Material’

⚫ One of the field of applied mechanics which deals with behavior of deformable
solid.
⚫ Called as strength of materials, mechanics of deformable body

⚫ Deals with the behavior of principal structural members to be designed a high

variety of mechanical and structural systems, such as ship structure, offshore
structure, aircraft, bridge, building and so on.
❑ Principal structural members
⚫ Categorized according to its shape and loading acting on it

⚫ Structural members (one dimensional members)

▪ Bar : axially loaded member
▪ Shaft : structural member under torsion (twisting moment)
▪ Beam : structural member under lateral load ⇒ most important
▪ Column : structural member under compression
Introduction <3>

이중선체(double hull)
Introduction <4>

❑ Target of This Course

⚫ Understanding of stress & strain
⚫ Understanding of deformation & displacement
⚫ Understanding of elasticity & inelasticity
⚫ Understanding of strain energy
⚫ Understanding of load-carrying capacity

❑ Most Important Things in This Course

⚫ What are solution of ‘Mechanics of Materials’ or ‘Structural Analysis’
▪ Stress and displacement to design the safe & economic structure.

Additional Information about Textbook <6>

❑ What is difference between 1st & 2nd editions?

⚫ Just units. That is SI unit only used. In the 2nd edition.

⚫ In the 1st ed., not only SI units but also the United State Customary System(USCS)
of units are used.

❑ Units
⚫ SI units
▪ International System of Units (Le Systeme International d’Unites)
▪ MKS (meter-kilogram-second) system
⚫ USCS or English or Imperial units
▪ FPS (foot-pound-second) units
