Exercise 3 Curling Momentum Simulation

In this exercise, you will use a simulation to observe and record the velocities of colliding curling stones (flat-
bottomed, granite disks). You will then calculate initial and final momentums for each stone and the initial and
final net momentum.

Procedure
1 Open the Curling Stone Momentum
(https://www.thephysicsaviary.com/Physics/Programs/Labs/CurlingStoneMomentumLab/index.html)
simulation provided by The Physics Aviary.

 SIMULATION: Curling Stone Momentum

opens in a new window or tab 

2 Read the instructions on the simulation home page and then select the "Begin" button.

3 Adjust the vertical separation of centers to 0 cm using the controls in the lower-left of the simulation. See
Figure 9.

speed to be used for Trial 1.

4 Adjust the mass of the red stone to 20 kg using the controls at the bottom of the simulation.

5 Adjust the mass of the yellow stone to 15 kg using the controls at the bottom of the simulation.

6 Adjust the speed of the red stone to 5.0 m/s using the controls in the lower right of the simulation and
record the value displayed by the red velocity vector as vi in Data Table 4.

7 Calculate the initial momentum for each stone using the equation below and record this value as pi in Data
Table 4.

p = mv
i i

8 Calculate the net initial momentum of the stones by adding the initial momentum of the yellow stone to
that of the red stone and record this value as pi,net in Data Table 4.

9 Run the simulation by clicking on the red stone and observe the final velocities displayed on the screen. See
Figure 10.

Note: The final velocity v1' on the simulation screen corresponds to the red stone and v2' corresponds to the
yellow stone.

10 Record the final velocities vf for each stone in Data Table 4 for Trial 1.

11 Reset the simulation by selecting the "Reset System" text on the screen.

12 Calculate the final momentum for each stone using the equation below and record as pf in Data Table 4.

of the red stone and record this value as pf,net in Data Table 4.
14-Repeat steps 3-13 for the Trial 2 and Trial 3 values in Data Table 4.
