1. DESCRIBE AN OBJECT (a gift, something you use etc.)
Describe a thing you cannot live without except cell phone or computer
You should say:
What it is
Why you can’t manage without it
How long you have had it for
And explain how you felt when you were without it?

Apart from my computer and cell phone, I cannot live without my wallet. It holds my cash, credit
cards and identification cards and whenever I need them in a certain situation, I can just get my
wallet out and pull them out to use. The wallet I have right now is black with two separate pockets
for cash, three slots for my credit and ID cards and a pouch for coins. I’ve had it for nearly seven
years and it’s not showing its age at all. In short, it is a nifty item with a simple look and functional
design.

I cannot live without my wallet because if I don’t have it with me, then I would be stuck as to what
I can do when I’m out in the city. I can’t buy anything; I can’t go into bars and nightclubs without
security verifying my age and I can’t keep my receipts. Therefore, whenever I’m about to go out
somewhere, I would always remember to bring my wallet in case I need my money or cards to do
something.

To prove that I cannot live without my wallet, let me recount the one time I lost it. I once lost my
old wallet at a party 10 years ago. It had all of my national and school ID cards and some pocket
money. I lost it by leaving it at the venue of the party and only once I was on my way back home
did I realize I lost my wallet. I ran back to the venue to see if it’s still there but I was too late since
it was gone. When it happened I felt anxious and sick to my stomach because everything that was
important was in that wallet. At that point I vowed to never lose it again when I get a new one.
2. DESCRIBE A PERSON (someone you admire, a family member etc.)
Describe your favorite famous person
You should say:
Who this person is.
How do you know about this person
What this person is famous for.
Why are you interested in this person.

A famous person I really enjoy watching is actor Daniel Craig. While he’s primarily known for
playing James Bond, he can play a wide range of characters and work in various genres other than
action.

I first knew about him when he was announced as the new lead actor for the James Bond series
and when I watched his first movie for the franchise, I really took to him because of his intensity.
Since then, I followed his career closely and he had gone on to do many more films outside of the
Bond series.

Outside of the Bond franchise, he is known for playing serious dramatic characters in smaller
films, as evidenced by movies such as Munich and Road to Perdition. However, one of my favorite
performances of his is from the mystery comedy movie Knives Out, where he plays the main
detective having to find out who committed the murder of an old author. The reason why it’s a
favorite of mine is because it is radically different from his image as a handsome leading man and
he gets to use an accent that is very much different from his typical English accent.

All in all, I am interested in Daniel Craig as an actor and as a person, since he comes off as rather
charming and humorous like most other English actors. While he is really good at playing
characters that have a certain sense of toughness, he is capable at showing his softer side in some
of his performances. I look forward to whatever he does next since he is now done with the
James Bond series.
3. DESCRIBE AN EVENT (a festival, celebration etc.)
Describe a historical event from your country
You should say:
What event it is
When it happened
Who or what was involved in it
And explain why you think it is an important historical event

My country has gone through a lot historically, from countless kingdoms and dynasties, to
numerous wars and revolutions. However, out of all of those events, the most consequential one
is the Vietnam War.

The Vietnam War lasted for a decade from March 1965 to April 1975 and it involved North and
South Vietnam engaging in numerous skirmishes with each other. In the broader context, it was
part of the Cold War which saw the Americans and the Soviets come into ideological conflict with
one another. This is especially because North Vietnam was supported by other communist nations
such as the Soviet Union and China, whereas South Vietnam received military backing from
democratic nations such as the United States and Australia. While there were some battles that
took place in the North, the majority of the fighting took place in the South as they were on the
defensive from the many incursions of the North Vietnamese Army. By the end of the war, North
Vietnam ultimately won and South Vietnam was then absorbed into the North under communist
leadership.

As I said before, the Vietnam War was the most consequential event of my country’s history
because it shaped Vietnam into the country that it is today. By the end of the war, it became a
communist country and it is still labeled as such to this day. The war also marked Vietnam’s
independence from Western influence and showed to the world that it is its own country that is
willing to fight against foreign aggression.
4. DESCRIBE AN ACTIVITY (e.g. a hobby)
Describe a time when you had to do something difficult, and you succeeded
You should say:
What is was
How you did/completed it
Why it was difficult
And how you felt about doing it

The most difficult thing I had to do was to climb a mountain with little to no prior experience of
mountain climbing. During a trip I took to America with some friends 6 years ago, we stayed at a
lodge that was near a mountain that was famous among expert climbers. One morning, we
decided to try mountain climbing for the first time, despite myself lacking any real experience
doing such a thing. With our equipment ready, we had set off to reach the summit before noon.
The mountain itself was difficult to climb, as the pathways were rocky and there was no safety
railing to prevent you from falling to your death.

In order for me to successfully traverse the mountain, I had to take small steps across the
pathways, slowly inching my way to the top. I also had to check my footing every time I was
about to take a step because it was easy to step on an uneven surface which could make me lose
my balance, fall off and possibly die. The reason why this was so difficult was because it caused
my muscles to strain so hard, making me progressively more tired with every step.

Despite me being out of shape for this kind of activity, I tried my hardest to get to the top and
keep up with my friends. I kept telling myself to not stop and not let the height of the mountain
scare me. Before noon, I was able to reach the top with my friends and it was the most
exhilarating feeling ever to achieve something so monumentally difficult. I never felt so glad to
be alive before that moment and it is a memory that I will cherish; however it is not something
that I want to do again, at least not for a while.
5. DESCRIBE A PLACE (somewhere you visited, a holiday etc.)
Describe a place in the countryside that you visited
You should say:
Where it is
When you visited this place
What you did there
And explain how you feel about this place

Whenever I want to get away from the hustle and bustle of urban life, I go out of my way to plan
a trip to the countryside to unwind. While many of the rural areas I’ve been to have been nice in
their own way, there was one area that I really took a liking to which was Cat Cat Village near Sa
Pa in northwestern Vietnam.

As I said before, Cat Cat Village is located on the outskirts of Sa Pa in northwestern Vietnam. I
first learned about it 3 years ago through an old friend of mine who owns and operates a small
home-stay lodge there. Having heard nothing but good things about it, I made plans to go there
and stay for 2 nights and upon reflection, it was a very good decision. What was special about that
village was the surrounding scenery; everywhere I looked the village was surrounded by lush green
mountains and terraced rice fields, creating a mood of serenity around the area. Furthermore, the
villagers themselves have been hospitable towards me when I first visited. They were eager to
show me around and have me visit their humble homes where they lived and breathed.

In addition to being shown around the village, I also spent a day exploring the surrounding natural
areas. As I mentioned before it was a lush and breathtaking sight to behold, and I managed to come
across the endemic wildlife there such as birds and wild boars. I also had lunch with some of the
villagers who shared with me some of the local delicacies that included roasted wild boar and
colored sticky rice, both of which were delicious.

Looking back, I felt that the village was rather quaint yet serene. The natural beauty was
unparalleled, the people there were welcoming and the atmosphere was tranquil. There is no doubt
that I will come back to Cat Cat Village once I get the opportunity.
6. DESCRIBE YOUR FAVORITE (book/film/advertisement/website)
Describe a song that you think is interesting
You should say:
What the song is
What story the song tells
Whether the song is popular
And explain why you think it is interesting

One of my favorite songs is Shine On You Crazy Diamond by Pink Floyd. It is a nine-part song
that altogether lasts 26 minutes and it is a classic for the rock genre. It is part of the album Wish
You Were Here, which was released in 1975 and is considered one of Pink Floyd’s best albums.

The song was written as a tribute to former band member Syd Barrett, who had a history of
mental illness and had to leave the band because of it. Therefore the song is about the rest of
Pink Floyd feeling guilty for having to remove Syd yet also thankful for him because he was a
major creative force in the band’s early days and he contributed to its early success. The song
also makes allusions to Syd’s past drug abuse and how it contributed to his deteriorating mental
health, which made it more necessary for the other members of the band to oust Syd.

When the song was first released in 1975, it was a massive hit among Pink Floyd fans since it
was in the style that they always loved from the beginning. New listeners also enjoyed it
immensely since rock was one of the most popular genres of music during that decade. Nearly 5
decades later, the song is still popular among rock fans and casual listeners since it helped define
the genre.
As for myself, I found the song interesting not only because the lyrics are profound but also the
style and composition are supremely engaging. The song often changes rhythm and incorporates
different instruments and melodies to great effect. I also enjoy the mood and tone of the song as
it is rather relaxing yet also somber due to the subject matter.
