Earth as a Source of Life
Introductory Message
For the facilitator:
Welcome to the Science – Grade 2 SSES Alternative Delivery
Mode (ADM) module on Earth as a Source of Life.
This module was collaboratively designed, developed and
reviewed by educators both from public and private institutions to
assist you, the teacher or facilitator in helping the learners meet
the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum while overcoming
their personal, social, and economic constraints in schooling.

9
1. Use the module with care. Do not put unnecessary
mark/s on any part of the module. Use a separate
sheet of paper in answering the exercises.
2. Don’t forget to answer What I Know before moving
on to the other activities included in the module.

each task.
4. Observe honesty and integrity in doing the tasks
and checking your answers.
5. Finish the task at hand before proceeding to the
next.
6. Return this module to your teacher/facilitator once
you are through with it.
If you encounter any difficulty in answering the tasks

understanding of the relevant competencies. You
can do it!

What I Need to Know

This module was designed and written with you in

mind. It is here to help you master the skill in inferring that
the Earth is the resource for life and one’s needs. The
scope of this module permits it to be used in many

1
different learning situations. The lessons are arranged to
follow the standard sequence of the course. But the order
in which you read them can be changed to correspond
with the textbook you are now using.
This module is about:

Lesson 1- Earth as a Source of life

After going through this module, you are expected to:

1. identify the different natural resources found on Earth;
2. infer that the Earth is the source of life and one’s
needs; and
3. appreciate the importance of the Earth’s natural
resources in our everyday living and to other living
organisms.

Lesson

1 Earth as a Source of Life

Earth is the only planet in the solar system that has

living organisms. It gives everything we need, air that we
breathe, water that we drink and food that we eat.
In this module, you will also understand the
importance of the resources of the Earth in supporting the
life of living organisms.

What’s In
Write Yes if the statement shows care for the Earth’s
resources or No if it is NOT. Write your answers on a
separate sheet of paper.
1. Children help their parents in planting trees.
2. My little sister destroys our plants in the garden.
3. My mother waters the plants every day.
4. The boy is wasting water by not turning off the
faucet when not in use.
5. The students joined the campaign “Stop Cutting Trees”.

What’s New

Let us read the poem below and answer

the questions that follow.
Earth is a Unique
Planet by Carmel L.
Arriola

Mother Earth, Mother Earth;

you are a great place to be.
Mother Earth, Mother Earth;
home planet for you and
me.

Use our Earth’s resources with

care, it is the only planet we all
share.
So, people let us all beware;
in using living things, we are the heirs.

Mother Earth, Mother Earth;

you are a great place to
be.
Mother Earth, Mother Earth;
home planet for you and
me.

All the resources that you give;

like land, water, and air we receive.
To sustain the life, we always achieve;
1
thus, our duty is to conserve it and retrieve.

1
Answer the following questions.
1. How is the Earth described in the poem?
2. How should we take care of our Earth?
3. What are the things that Earth can give us in order
to survive?

What is It

Earth is the planet where we live.

It is rich in resources that support
different forms of life.
It is where we can find living
organisms, interacting with each other
and their non-living environment such
as land, water, and air.
Land as a source of life
The solid part of the earth is land. It is the ground
that we step on.
It covers about 30% of the Earth’s surface. It is
made up of soil, rocks, and other minerals.
Land is important because people live here.

1
Also, land is a habitat for many living things. This is
where plants grow and land animals live.

People use land for farming to produce food that we

eat.

People get food from plants and animals.

14
Water as a source of life
According to the Environmental Health Practitioner
Manual (2012), living organisms need water to survive.
Water is one of the most important substances on Earth.
People, plants, and animals must have water to survive. If
there is no water there will be no life on Earth.
It covers about 70% of the Earth’s surface. Bodies of
water such as oceans, seas, rivers, and lakes are home
to some plants and animals.
Water has many uses. What uses of water do you see
in the pictures?

Also, marine and aquatic animals need water as their habitat.

1
Air as a source of life
We all need air to survive. Air contains oxygen and
carbon dioxide useful to plants and animals.

Carbon dioxide exhaled by humans and animals into

the atmosphere are used by plants to make their own
food through the process of photosynthesis.
All green plants during the process of photosynthesis,
release oxygen back into the atmosphere to be used by
people and animals for breathing.

What’s More
Activity 1: Determine the source of life that is being
described in each statement. Write letter A for Air, L for
Land and W for water. Write your answers on a separate
sheet of paper.
1. It is here where sharks and whales live.
2. It contains oxygen and carbon dioxide useful to
plants and animals.
3. This is the ground where you build shelter.
4. It is the most important substance that helps us
to stay hydrated.
5. This is where we can find mountains and forests
and animals also live.

Activity 2: Determine the word being described in each

statement by arranging the jumbled letters. Write your
answers on a separate sheet of paper.
D L A N 1. People use this Earth’s resource for farming.
R W A E T 2. We use this resource in watering our plants.
R E A T H 3. This is the only place where land, water,
and air exist.
R A I 4. It is the mixture of gases that we breathe.
L A N T S P 5. They absorb carbon dioxide and release
oxygen from their leaves, which humans and other
animals need for breathing.

1
Activity 3: Match the picture in Column A and look for
its effect on the surroundings in Column B. Write your
answers in a separate sheet of paper.
