Sir,
I have the honor to submit the Names of Grade Level Chairmen and the Compendium
Writers who worked for the Compendium of Concepts in SCIENCE 4 based on the Most
Essential Learning Competencies of the Science Matrix for the Elementary of the Department
of Education, a Work of Love which we present as “A GIFT TO THE TARLAQUENO LEARNERS
AND SCIENCE TEACHERS”, hard copies of which are attached herewith as tangible proofs of
our Creative and Collaborative Output in aid of the Delivery of Instruction in Science Education.

FOREW0RD
This SCIENCE BOOK of COMPENDIUM of SCIENCE CONCEPTS at the
end of each Quarter which are based on the MOST ESSENTIAL LEARNING
COMPETENCIES in SCIENCE is a collection of our innovative work
passionately written in aid of delivery of instruction for Science Education.
It is a WORK of LOVE which we had joined the CONTENTS of our HEADS,
the SKILLS of our HANDS, the VALUES and ATTITUDES of our HEARTS and
the STRENGTH of our HEALTH (4H’s) to come up with these COLLECTIVE
PIECES OF OUR CREATIVE MINDS, believing that SCIENCE dwells on the
Philosophies of EXPLORE AND LEARN (Explorare at Discite). The OUTPUT
of our conglomerated efforts, this SCIENCE BOOK is our HUMBLE GIFT TO
THE TARLAQUENO LEARNERS AND TO THE SCIENCE TEACHERS of DEPED –
SDO TARLAC PROVINCE.

Q3/ Week 6
Do you know what happens when light strikes and passes through different kinds
of materials?
Light always travels in a straight line from their source. When an object is placed in
the path of light and light strikes it, light behaves in different ways. The behavior depends
mainly on the kind of material that light strikes. Sometimes light produce shadows as
interacts with certain materials.
QUARTER 3
QUARTER 3 WEEK 6 DAY 4
Light can travel through some objects very easily. If light can pass through an object
like air, water, or glass, the object is transparent. When an object allows light to bounce off it
or reflect the light, the object is opaque. Finally, translucent objects cause light to scatter and
go in different directions.
When a light waves strikes an object, the light will do three things: transmit (go
through an object), reflect (to bounce off an object) and/or absorb (the energy of the light
wave transforms into heat).

Q3/ Week 6
Light is everywhere, and without light, life would not exist. Light waves travel from
place to place. Light is a form of energy that can be seen when it is reflected off the surface of
an object. It is visible to the human eye and is responsible for the sense of sight. Light waves
travel through the air from place to place and do not carry matter. Light travels at a speed of
186,000 miles per second. It takes about 8 minutes for the light from the Sun 93 million miles
away to reach the Earth. Light is believed to travel faster than anything in the universe. Light
is unable to travel through solids, but it can travel through liquids and gases.
As a form of energy, light has the potential to cause changes in objects that absorb it.
If you look around your house and your surrounding you will see items made from various
materials. Items can be classified by the way they interact with light.
Materials that allow light to pass through are called transparent materials. Materials
that partially or allow little amount of light to pass through are called translucent materials.
Materials that prevent light from passing through are called opaque materials.
QUARTER 3
QUARTER 3 WEEK 6 DAY 5
Blocked light is blocked by non-transparent objects. Light can be blocked with a sun
visor, umbrella, or the moon during an eclipse. Another example of blocked light will cause a
shadow of the blocked object to appear. Therefore, a person can see the shadow of their
body on the sidewalk.

Light bends when it travels through one material to another. The bending of a light
ray is called refraction. Lens is a transparent curved surface that refracts light.
Procedure:
1.Half fill a clear drinking glass with water. Then pour some oil into the water.
108
2.Put the fork into it. Look through one side of the glass. Notice how the fork appears.

3.Drop a coin into a glass of water. Observe the coin from different angles. Do this as you
rotate slowly the glass.
Questions:
1. How does the fork look as you see it through the side of the glass?
2. Does the number of coin seem to change as you slowly rotate the glass?
KEY POINTS:
1.As light passes through oil, it slows down. Then it increases its speed as it passes through air
and water which are thinner materials than oil. The difference in speed causes the light ray to
bend. This causes the bent appearance of the fork as you view it from one side of the glass.
2.No

Refraction of Light
As you look at the pencil from the top or on one side of the glass, the light from the
upper part of the pencil travels directly to your eyes. The pencil appears to bend as it passes
through a medium which is water. This happens because the light ray slows down as it
passes through the water whch is more denser or compact than air.
The change in the direction as light passes through different materials, such as air or

Rainbow is formed by means of refraction. Rainbow is formed in the sky as sunlight bends
when it passes through raindrops. The same thing happens when sunlight passes through a
glass of water. The sunlight refracts separating into colors red, orange, yellow, green, blue,
indigo, and violet (ROYGBIV).

Q3/ Week 8
WHAT IS REFRACTION?
➢ Refraction is the bending or change in direction of light when it travels from one
medium to another.
EXAMPLES OF REFRACTION
• A bowl has a coin placed on the bottom just out of view. When water is
poured into the bowl suddenly the coin can be seen – the water seems to
“lift” the coin.

➢ Images showing effect of refraction between two media – air and water.
• The pencil/straw seems broken where it enters the water.
• The light from the fish refracts away from the normal, giving the impression
that the fish is located along the “brown line”, when in reality it is much
closer to the fisherman (as indicated in blue).

➢ Light has everything to do with colors. We cannot see colors without light.
• If you see an object that is white, it means that the object reflects all the
colors.
115
• If you see an object that is black, the object absorbed all colors.
• When light strikes a green object, such as a leaf, it would absorb all other

➢ Different colors of light travel at different speeds through different things like air,
water, and glass.
➢ When the light moves from air to water or air to glass, the different colors of light
bend at different angles. They separate into individual colors.
