Quarter 2 - Module 2:
Cardiovascular Adaptations to
Exercise

Notes to the Teacher

The teacher will provide pictures as examples so that the

learner can easily understand what is being discussed in this
module. He/she should also monitor closely the progress of the
child. It is strongly advised that there will be once a week interaction
with the teacher and learner.

Introductory Message
For the facilitator:

Welcome to the Cardiovascular Adaptations to Exercise Alternative Delivery Mode (ADM).

This module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by educators both from public and
private institutions to assist you, the teacher or facilitator in helping the learners meet the standards set
by the K to 12 Curriculum while overcoming their personal, social, and economic constraints in
schooling.

This learning resource hopes to engage the learners into guided and independent learning activities at
their own pace and time. Furthermore, this also aims to help learners acquire the needed 21st century
skills while taking into consideration their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the body of the module:

Notes to the Teacher

This contains helpful tips or strategies
that will help you in guiding the learners.

As a facilitator, you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this module. You also need to
keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to manage their own learning. Furthermore,
you are expected to encourage and assist the learners as they do the tasks included in the module.

For the learner:

Welcome to the Cardiovascular Adaptations to Exercise Alternative Delivery Mode (ADM) Module.

This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful opportunities for guided and
independent learning at your own pace and time. You will be enabled to process the contents of the
learning resource while being an active learner.

developing this module.

The following are some reminders in using this module:

1. Use the module with care. Do not put unnecessary mark/s on any part of the module. Use a
separate sheet of paper in answering the exercises.
2. Don’t forget to answer What I Know before moving on to the other activities included in the
module.
3. Read the instruction carefully before doing each task.
4. Observe honesty and integrity in doing the tasks and checking your answers.
5. Finish the task at hand before proceeding to the next.
6. Return this module to your teacher/facilitator once you are through with it.
If you encounter any difficulty in answering the tasks in this module, do not hesitate to consult
your teacher or facilitator. Always bear in mind that you are not alone.

We hope that through this material, you will experience meaningful learning and gain deep
understanding of the relevant competencies. You can do it!
What I Need to Know

This module will let you understand how the cardiovascular system reacts to the
trainings and exercises we do. Overtime, as we train, you will learn how the
cardiovascular system adapts to increased workloads to support the activities we are
doing.

After going through this module, you are expected to summarize training adaptations of
the cardiovascular system.

What I Know

Read the following statements. Write YES if the statement is

correct and NO if it is wrong. Use a separate sheet of paper for your
answer.

1. Cardiovascular adaptations to training are extremely important for

preventing cardiovascular disease.
2. Aerobic exercises like jogging, swimming and mountain climbing are
good activities for the heart.
3. Cardiovascular system is made up of your heart, blood vessels, and
lungs.
4. The heart muscle of a fit, active person pumps more blood per
heartbeat than that of a less active person.
5. Regular physical activity does not helps improve your health and resist
disease like hypokinetic diseases.
Lesson
Cardiovascular Adaptations to
2 Exercise

In the previous lesson, you have learned about principles of exercise training its
terminologies and example. You have also given activities to deepen your understanding
about the lesson.
In this lesson, you will summarize the adaptations of Cardiovascular system to
exercise. It will also help you to understand the physiological adaptations in response to
training.
In going through the module, you have to read carefully and perform the activities
as instructed. You must answer also the entire tests and exercises based on what you
have learned about this module.

What’s In

In our previous lesson, you learned about principles of exercise training. Let’s
check if you still remember our previous lesson.

1. Write the definition of principle of exercise training?

2. What are the principles of training?
3. Why is it important to know the principles of exercise training?

What’s New

Consider yourself on the picture doing the exercise.

.
1. What do you feel after doing this exercise?
2. Does your heart beats faster?
3. What adaptations do you think your heart will get after exercising?

What is It

Cardiovascular Adaptations to Exercise

Cardiovascular adaptations to training are extremely important for improving

endurance exercise performance, and preventing cardiovascular diseases.
Aerobic fitness, anaerobic fitness, and muscular endurance training place larger
demands on the heart than any other type of training. Over time these demands result
in adaptations to cardiovascular system such as:

Physiological Adaptation

 The muscular walls of the heart increase in thickness,

Heart Size particularly in the left ventricle.
(size of  The left ventricles internal dimensions increase as a result
heart→ of increased ventricular filling.
ventricular
volume)
 The increase in size of the heart enables the left ventricle
Stroke to stretch more and thus fill with more blood. The increase
Volume (SV) in muscle wall thickness also increase the contractility
(total blood resulting in increased stroke volume at rest and during
volume) exercise, increasing blood supply to the body.
 As cardiac output at rest remains constant the increase in
Resting Heart stroke volume is accompanied by a corresponding
Rate (RHR) decrease in heart rate.
(decrease
heart rate)

 Cardiac output increases significantly during maximal

Cardiac exercise effort due to the increase in SV. This results in
Output oxygen supply, waste removal and hence improved
(Q) endurance performance.
(maximal
cardiac output)

 People with blood pressure in the ‘normal’ ranges

Blood experience little change in BP at rest or with exercise;
Pressure (BP) however hypertensive people find their BP’s reduce
(decrease towards normal as they do more exercise. This is due to a
systolic & reduction in total peripheral resistance within the artery,
diastolic blood and improved condition and elasticity of the smooth
pressure) muscle in the blood vessel walls.

Physiological adaptations are always specific to the training and stress

placed upon the body. It is the adaptations that occur that cause improvement in
performance after training.
Training that uses the principles of training will cause more adaptations
than training that does not. Adaptations require training above the thresholds and
create the need for an increased work load according to the principle of
progressive overload.
Physiological adaptations are lost when training stops and are more
complete when training involves various activities.
Other training types such as hypertrophy can also result in these
adaptations occurring in the cardiovascular system however the degree of
adaptation will be less significant than the adaptation caused by aerobic fitness,
anaerobic fitness and muscular endurance training.
What’s More

Find the secret message.

Direction: Complete each statement by writing the missing word. Clues
are provided inside the box.
1. The muscular walls of the heart increase in thickness, particularly in
the left ventricle, providing a more powerful contraction.
2. Decrease both systolic and diastolic pressure at rest and during
submaximal exercise.
3. Increases significantly during maximal exercise effort due to the
increase in SV.
4. Increase in size of the heart that enables the left ventricle to stretch
more and thus fill with more blood.
5. As cardiac output at rest remains constant the increase in stroke
volume is accompanied by a corresponding decrease in heart rate.
