ENGLISH PROFICIENCY EXAM ANNOUNCEMENT
20-21-22 SEPTEMBER 2023

As it has been announced on our website, this information is assumed to have been read by all the students.
Students are responsible for reading, understanding and abiding by the exam rules.

Dear Students,
The Placement/Proficiency Exam, which will be held on 20-21-22 September 2023, consists of 2 stages:

STAGE 1 LISTENING, READING, USE OF ENGLISH 20 September 2023 Wednesday


(PLACEMENT (GRAMMAR & VOCABULARY) Time: 13.30
EXAM SESSION) * The exam consists of multiple choice
questions.
* Students who pass the Stage 1 exam are
required to take the Stage 2 exam. Those
who fail are placed in preparatory classes
based on their grades.

Exemption from the Foreign Language Preparatory Program: Please see the Article 9 in Ankara University
Foreign Language Education and Teaching Regulation.

Language Exams Recognized by AUSFL: Please click HERE to see the exams that are recognized by Ankara
University School of Foreign Languages. The scores of those alternative exams (e.g. TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic) are
valid for 3 (three) years. (These exams must be taken in an exam centre in a university campus; scores obtained
from another exam centre will not be accepted.) To be exempt from the foreign language preparatory program,
the students must submit their exam score to the Student Affairs Unit (yabdil@ankara.edu.tr) before 20
September 2023. Documents that are sent after 19 September 2023 will not be taken into consideration.

Rules:
1) You will be asked to show your ID card (passport for foreign students) and/or student ID card before the exam
starts. Please take these documents with you.

2) All students are required to follow the exam rules. In the event of violation of these exam rules, the instructor
does not have to warn you at that exact moment. The exam of any student who violated the rules will be voided
and disciplinary action will be taken.

STAGE 1 (PLACEMENT EXAM SESSION) (20 September 2023 Wednesday Starting Time: 13.30)

Who takes the Stage 1 Exam?


(a) All the students registered in 2023 in a program where the medium of instruction is 100% English or 30%
(Please see Page 7 in the 2023-2024 Registration Manual to see the list of these programs),

(b) Among the students registered in a program where the medium of instruction is Turkish, those who wish to
attend preparatory classes optionally will be chosen in compliance with the quotas specified in the 2023-2024
Registration Manual and according to their university entrance exam scores. The list of the chosen students will
be announced on www.yabdil.ankara.edu.tr before the exam. Those whose names are on the list are required
to take the Stage 1 (Placement) Exam. Those who prefer to attend preparatory classes optionally take only
the Stage 1 Exam; they do not take the Stage 2 Exam.

(c) Among the students who were registered in 2022, those who are required to take the Stage 1 Exam (Please
click HERE to see the announcement made for the students who were registered in 2022. (>> 2022-2023

(d) Students who have been dismissed from our university but wish to take the exam (by applying until 04
September 2023 after the announcement made on www.yabdil.ankara.edu.tr) and whose applications have
been accepted are admitted to the Stage 1 Exam.

NOT: The list of the students who will take the exam and also the exam room will be announced on
http://yabdil.ankara.edu.tr/ before the exam. Please follow the announcements carefully and if your name is
not in the list, contact us (yabdil@ankara.edu.tr) as soon as possible.

Stage 1 – Placement Exam Session:


o This session consists of “Listening, Reading and Use of English (Grammar & Vocabulary)” parts with multiple-
choice questions and assessment is carried out automatically by the system.

o Before the exam, proctors will check identity cards and students will be required to sign a list. All students are
required to be present in the exam room at least 15 minutes prior to the session time. (The exam room where
you will take the exam will be announced at http://yabdil.ankara.edu.tr/ by 19 September 2023 at the latest.)

o The exam starts with “Listening” section. Students who are late for the exam will be allowed in the exam room
when the “Listening” part is over. However, since they will have missed the “Listening” part, markings, if any,
in the listening section of their optical form will not be assessed. Students who arrive at the exam room upon
the completion of the “Listening” part will NOT be allowed to take the rest of the session or the Stage 2 exam.
Therefore, all students are expected to be present in the exam room before the scheduled start time.

o In this session, students are required to mark their answers on the optical form. Markings on the booklets will
not be taken into consideration. All markings must be completed within the exam duration. No additional
time will be given for this.

NOTE: Students who cannot pass the Stage 1 exam are placed in one of the L1, L2 or L3 levels of the Preparatory
Program according to their grades and are not admitted to the Stage 2 exam. Detailed information will be shared
at the School’s website upon the completion of the exam process - before 29 September 2023 at the latest.
Students who pass the Stage 1 exam earn the right to take the Stage 2 exam, and a list of these students’ names
will be announced at http://yabdil.ankara.edu.tr on the same day (20 September). (The exam room where these
students will take the Stage 2 exam will be announced in the same list.)

STAGE 2 (PROFICIENCY EXAM SESSION)

SESSION 1 (WRITING EXAM)


Date/Time: 21 September 2023 Thursday Starting Time: 13.30

o The students who are late for 5 minutes will be allowed to take the exam. However, those who show up
after 5 minutes will not be accepted.

o Do not forget to sign the list provided by the exam proctor.

o You will be given 2 (two) topics and you are required to write “an opinion essay” about ONE of them.

SESSION 2 (LISTENING, READING, USE OF ENGLISH (GRAMMAR & VOCABULARY))

SESSION 3 (SPEAKING EXAM)
Date/Time: 22 September 2023 Friday
Starting time: 09:30 (An appointment time will be set for each student. Each student will have 10 minutes.)

CONSENT DECLARATION FORM


The speaking exam process is recorded. The exam recordings will be used solely for evaluation purposes. You can
read the Ankara University Senate Decision Model dated 13.07.2020 with meeting no. 562 and decision no. 5023
regarding the protection of personal data and the Clarification Text Regarding the Protection of Personal Data by
clicking on the link HERE. We kindly ask you to print out the Express Consent Declaration Form from the Data
Holder Regarding Personal Data (on the last page of the decision model) and sign it. You are required to submit
it to the proctor of the Stage 2 exam on 21 September 2023.

Information on Session 3:
(1) An appointment time will be set for each student and the list will be shared with students at least one day before
the exam.

(2) Please do not be late for your appointment. Be at the exam venue at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start
time.

(3) You will be asked to show your ID card (passport for foreign students) and/or student ID card before the exam
starts. Please take these documents with you.

(4) The students who do not take the exam on the exam date will be deemed to have given up his/her right to take
the spoken exam.

(5) The audio recording will begin as soon as you enter the exam room and your performance will be recorded. You
will be asked to introduce yourself briefly; however, this part will not be graded.

(6) The speaking exam consists of two parts. At the beginning of the first part, the instructors will give you a cue card.
You will be asked to read the topic on it out loud. You will have 1 minute to think and take notes. When the time is
up, you are required to answer each of the questions. In the second part, you will be asked some follow-up questions

(7) The speaking exam sessions are conducted and evaluated by two instructors. Click HERE to see the evaluation

The exam results will be announced on http://yabdil.ankara.edu.tr/ a few days after the exam. The students
registered in programs where the medium of instruction is 100% English and who obtain the minimum 70 (seventy)
points in the Proficiency Exam (Stage 2) (the students who are registered in a program where the medium of
instruction is 30% English must obtain at least 60 (sixty) points) are exempt from the Preparatory Programme and
can start their classes in their departments. These students are required to contact their departments for course
registration as soon as possible.

Students who fail the Proficiency Exam (Stage 2) will be placed in preparatory classes (L1, L2, L3, and L4 levels
according to their scores) and class lists will be announced on http://yabdil.ankara.edu.tr/ on 29 September 2023
at the latest.

Classes will begin on 02 October 2023 in the fall semester.
