Pliers set

Pliers are powerful hand tools that are used to grab or pull something that
cannot be done with bare hands. Usually, small tools like insulated wire or
nails are pulled out from cable, wall or woods using pliers. They are also
used to tightened things like hooks or knobs.
There are mainly 5 types of pliers that are popular among the workers. They
are- diagonal pliers, lineman pliers, long-nosed pliers, slip joint pliers, and
groove joint pliers. You will be astonished by discovering the usefulness of
the pliers set as it offers various purposes.

Measurement tape

As the name suggests, a measurement tape is used to measure the height,

width, length and depth of any large or small object. It is the measurement
tape that helps you make your DIY project perfect and attractive on the eye.
A durable auto-retractable measuring tape can be your best friend if you use
them correctly. Moreover, your tape should have impact-resistant Abs case
with non-slip rubber grips and stainless steel blade. Make sure the
measuring tape fits well inside your pocket for easy portability.
The ideal length of the tape should be no less than 25 ft. And, a locking
feature should allow you to use this tape more conveniently.

Wrench set

Wrenches are useful when you are dealing with bolts and nuts. You need a
well-build wrench to loosen or tighten up bolts and nuts. There are 2 types
of wrench you will find in the market place. They are – adjustable wrench
and non-adjustable wrench.

Non-adjustable wrench set (5-10 pieces) is useful when you are working on
a large project continuously without the hassle of adjusting them every time.
But, an adjustable wrench set (2 pieces) is perfect for simple home DIY
projects where you need to do precise operations.
Make sure that you buy a heavy-duty wrench set made of heat-treated,
forged carbon steel. Moreover, a non-slip handle will provide additional grip
while a chrome-plated wrench will remain rust-free. Overall, a wrench set is
very versatile and you should have this tool.

C- Clamps

A c-clamp is a c-shaped tool used to clutch or hold things firmly. It works

perfect to temporarily fasten something strongly on its position. This tool
secures parts for assembly, fastening, glueing and welding to ensure precise
operation. It will also come in handy when you are going to repair something
without the help of others. You can call it your “third hand”.
The thick iron body with a firm swivel pad and sliding T- bar ensure even
pressure and maximum clamping force. These clamps perfectly hold any
item while drilling, screwing, and hammering. So, don’t forget to add this
valuable tool to your collection.

INFORMATION SHEET No. 5.2-1
Hand tools and it’s specification
Learning Objective:
After reading this INFORMATION SHEET, YOU MUST be able to:
 Identify specific hand tools

INTRODUCTION
Hand tools are manually-operated tools that fit in the hand. They are used
in many industries and applications to assemble, install, repair and
maintain such items as machines, products, structures, components and
equipment.

 liers have two jaws and are designed to grip objects by using leverage.
 Calipers measure the distance between two symmetrically-opposing
sides.
 Screwdrivers are devices that fit into the head of a screw to drive the
screw into the object to be fastened.
 Wrenches are used to tighten or loosen nuts and bolts.
 Hammers are hand tools that deliver repeated blows to an object. For
example, a hammer is used to drive a nail into wood.
Specialty Tools
For every basic type of hand tool, many specialized varieties are available.
For example, a standard wrench has two fixed jaws, but an adjustable pipe
wrench has two serrated, movable jaws for gripping and turning a pipe. A
standard hammer can be made from a common metal such as chrome, but
titanium may be added to provide extra strength.

Controlled Pressure

In operations where precise measurements are crucial, specialized hand

tools may be used to apply specific amounts of pressure, or to precisely
measure the tension being applied. For example, torque wrenches and
torque screwdrivers are used to set the amount of torque applied to the
tightness of the screw or bolt. This torque amount is the rotational force
generated when energy is applied to the hand tool.

Routine maintenance

Learning Objective:
After reading this INFORMATION SHEET, YOU MUST be able to:
 Understand the routine maintenance

INTRODUCTION
Routine maintenance are maintenance activities such as regular inspections
or machine servicing. Routine maintenance is done on a regular basis,
whether that be daily, weekly, monthly, or yearly. Routine maintenance is
an important part of keeping systems up to date and functional.

Overview

Routine maintenance tasks are small and simple in nature and only require
basic maintenance skills to perform well. They may be completed daily,
weekly, monthly, quarterly, or annually. Companies that invest in routine
maintenance can extend the life of their assets, reduce emergency
maintenance, and keep their production lines or facilities up and running
more consistently.
Routine maintenance is a type of preventive maintenance and also a key
part of total productive maintenance in which machine operators perform
small maintenance tasks to increase the reliability of the machines they use
every day.
How routine maintenance decreases downtime

Routine maintenance is designed to help keep equipment, machines, and

buildings operating optimally. If a particular piece of equipment needs
lubrication, it may work at a slower rate and reduce the efficiency of an
entire line. If dirt interferes with a certain component, an entire production
line can be shut down until the problem is identified. Lubricating and
cleaning equipment on a regular schedule prevents such problems.

In addition, routine maintenance can be scheduled on a daily basis, allowing

a company to maximize the use of its maintenance resources. For example,
if maintenance technicians move from one emergency work order to another,
they may have to travel between locations, gather different tools and
equipment, or simply switch mental gears from one problem to the next. A
maintenance worker performing routine maintenance can clean, inspect,
and adjust many items on a single piece of equipment much more quickly.

Examples of routine maintenance

Workers who perform routine maintenance for an apartment complex or

other residential building are responsible for cleaning shared areas,
inspecting and cleaning units when residents move in or out, or changing
filters or other components in the HVAC system.

Routine maintenance in a factory setting involves lubricating, cleaning, and

adjusting machines, replacing equipment parts on a schedule, inspecting
certain components, or performing conditioned monitoring exercises.

Maintenance technicians who work for a municipality perform routine

maintenance throughout a city. This includes trash removal, landscaping,
and building walkthroughs to check for busted ballasts and burnt bulbs.

Benefits of routine maintenance

Routine maintenance prevents larger problems from occurring. Taking good

care of equipment, machines, and facilities extends their overall life as well
as keep them performing at their best. Routine maintenance gives
technicians an opportunity to regularly “lay their eyes on” important
components of a production line or specific system as well as a chance to
catch any other potential problems that are lurking.

In addition, most maintenance technicians assigned to perform routine

inspections, cleaning, or adjustments are entry-level or relatively new to a
particular maintenance department. Routine maintenance is typically
simple and straightforward and is an excellent training ground for a new
technician to learn about a particular facility, business, or complex.

Routine maintenance provides an excellent return on investment
considering the reduction of emergency work orders, increased efficiency of
equipment, and fewer equipment replacement needs.

In order to maximize the benefits of routine maintenance, provide training

and education to maintenance technicians about how to clean, inspect,
lubricate, service, and adjust equipment, components or systems. Create a
comprehensive maintenance checklist for each piece of equipment or
machinery that requires routine maintenance, and research the industry
standard for lubricating, replacing, or cleaning to ensure the routine
maintenance is appropriate.
