HOW TO USE THIS COMPETENCY – BASED LEARNING MODULE

Welcome to the Module; METAL WORKS/ SHIELDED METAL ARC WELDING.


This module comprises the training materials and activities for you to complete.
The module Metal Works/ Shielded Metal Arc Welding comprises the knowledge,
skills and attitudes required for SMAW NC II. It is one of the common modules for National
Certificate Level as it comprises the basic, common and core competency of the
qualification.
This module requires you to go through a series of learning activities in order to
complete each learning outcome stated. In each learning outcome there are Information
Sheets, Resource Sheets and References Materials for further reading to help you better
understand the required activities. Follow these activities and answer the self-check at the
end of each learning outcome. You can get the answer key from your instructor and check
your work honestly. If you have concerns and clarification, just ask your facilitator for
assistance.

TITLE: Use Hand Tools and Equipment

PERFORMANCE Given the necessary tools, materials and equipment and

perform proper use of bench vise

EQUIPMENT:  Bench vise

Steps/Procedures:

1. Mount vice-
Before using your vice, make sure it is securely mounted onto a
stable surface, such as a workbench.

2. Open vice jaws


To open the vice jaws, turn the handle in an anti-clockwise
direction.

3. Place workpiece
Place your workpiece within the jaws of the vice, with the back
of the workpiece resting on the stationary jaw’s surface.
4. Ensure that the area to be worked on is as close to the edge
of the jaws as possible. This will avoid any unwanted vibrations
when completing tasks, such as cutting, gluing or painting.

5. Close vice jaws


Turn the handle in a clockwise direction to move the sliding jaw
inwards, thus closing the vice jaws around the workpiece.
