You may show your Certificates of Competency from previous trainings to your
trainer so you won’t undergo the same training again. If you can show your trainer that you
are competent in a particular skill, tell her/him about it so you won’t have to undergo the
same training again. If ever you have skill that is relevant to this module, they may be useful
as part of the evidence for RPL.
You will be utilizing a Learner’s Diary at the end of this learning material. Use this
diary to record important dates, jobs undertaken and workplace events that will assist you for
further details to your trainer. Record of achievement is also provided by the trainer once you
completed the module.
This learning material was prepared to help you achieve the required competency for
the qualification in SMAW NC II. This learning material serves as the source of information
for the acquisition of knowledge and skills independently and at your own pace having the
minimum supervision or assistance from your instructor.

1. Mount vice-
Before using your vice, make sure it is securely mounted onto a
stable surface, such as a workbench.
3. Place workpiece
Place your workpiece within the jaws of the vice, with the back
of the workpiece resting on the stationary jaw’s surface.
4. Ensure that the area to be worked on is as close to the edge
of the jaws as possible. This will avoid any unwanted vibrations
when completing tasks, such as cutting, gluing or painting.
