Site Planning is defined by Kevin Lynch as “the
art of arranging structures on the land and
shaping the spaces between; an art linked to
architecture, engineering, landscape architecture
and city planning.” (Site Planning)

Harvey M. Rubenstein defines it as “the art and science
of arranging the uses of portions of land.” These uses
are designated in detail by selecting and analyzing sites,
forming land use plans, organizing vehicular and
pedestrian circulation, developing visual form and
materials concepts, readjusting the existing landforms by
design grading, providing proper drainage, and
developing the construction details necessary to carry
out the projects”. (A Guide to Site and Environmental
Planning, 1980)

INTRODUCTION TO SITE PLANNING AND
LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE

SITE PLANNER is the profession that designates the uses of

portions of land in detail by:
▪ Selecting and analysing sites.
▪ Forming land use plan.
▪ Organizing vehicular and pedestrian circulations.
▪ Developing visual form and material concepts.
▪ Re-adjusting the existing landforms by design grading.
▪ Providing proper drainage.
▪ Developing the construction details necessary to carry out
the projects.

PARAMETERS OF SITE SELECTION

PARAMETERS MEANS :
➢ any factor that defines a system and determines
(or limits) its performance.

➢ a reference or value that is passed to a function,

procedure, subroutine, command, or program.

➢ a variable quantity determining outcome.

PARAMETERS OF SITE SELECTION

SITE SELECTION MEANS :

➢ Is a process for identifying suitable parcels of

land for specific purposes.

➢ It involves the collection and analysis of a

wide array of site and contextual data.

PARAMETERS OF SITE SELECTION

TWO METHODS OF ESTABLISHING A SITE:

1. SITE SELECTION PROCESS

This process selects from a list of potential sites
one that suits best the given use and
requirements of the project.

2. DEVELOPMENT SUITABILITY PROCESS

This process selects the best possible use and
development suited for a given site.

PARAMETERS OF SITE SELECTION

Two Methods of Site Selection:

1. Sites are considered within a general location

and a choice is made of the one best meeting
the preliminary objectives.

a. Ideal sites - sites with least modification, best

meets the project requirements
b. Alternative sites - possible sites

2. Site location is chosen by a client before the

establishment of a program or even before a use for
the site has been determined.

PARAMETERS OF SITE SELECTION

Program development is based on the following

factors:

1. Site requirements
2. Sizes
3. Types of building and site construction
4. Uses of materials

SITE ANALYIS
Site analysis is a preliminary phase
of architectural and urban design
processes dedicated to the study of
the climatic, geographical,
historical, legal, and infrastructural
context of a specific site.

SITE ANALYIS
Site analysis diagrams are the graphic
translation of key observations and
analyses as they relate to the material
conditions of a site.
Common themes appearing in site
analysis diagrams include sun and shade
paths, movement and circulation
patterns, land use, and public space vs.
private space.

SITE ANALYIS
Good site analysis allows the designer to
improve the project, ensuring that the
building makes the best use of the
resources, such as light, access, views,
on the site as possible. It should also
allow the designer to anticipate any
potential issues which may cause
problems to the project.

SWOT Analysis Meaning in Architecture?
SWOT analysis meaning in Architecture is to find strengths,
weaknesses, opportunities, and strengths of the site and
surroundings with respect to the project which we are going to
construct on the site. The swot analysis process includes
understanding the site and its surrounding in every aspect
whether it is positive or negative to the project. SWOT analysis
can be done by going on the site or can be done online with
SWOT analysis tools online available. There are not specifically
made tools for SWOT analysis in architecture but tools such
as google earth can help in doing SWOT analysis online.

S.W.O.T ANALYIS
Why do we do SWOT Site Analysis in Architecture?

SWOT site Analysis in architecture is important because it helps

in making the design more responsive to the site and its
surrounding. Create a SWOT analysis of the site and you will find
strengths and opportunities which you can incorporate into your
design. Similarly, you will find weaknesses and threats that can
be overcome with your design.

S.W.O.T ANALYIS
Strength

Strengths are the things on site that are in favor of our project.
For example, if our site is in direct connection with the main road
and we have to design a shopping mall then it is considered a
strength of our project. But if the project was to design a
meditation and yoga building on this site then this direct
connected main road will create noise and it can not be
considered a strength for our project.

PLN 413
S.W.O.T ANALYIS
Weaknesses

Weaknesses are the things on site that are not in favor of our
project. These weaknesses are present on the site and can be
overcome with design solutions. For example, there can be a fish
market near to site which can create a bad odors issue for the
project or there can be a busy road adjacent to the site which can
cause noise issues. These can be overcome in design by creating
tree barriers etc.

S.W.O.T ANALYIS
Opportunities

Opportunities are the things on site that can be used to enhance

the design and usability of the building that will be constructed
on the site. For example, if there is a lake near the site, and the
project is to build a resort then this lake can be used for views. So
this is an opportunity for the site with respect to the project.

S.W.O.T ANALYIS
Threats

Threats are the things on site that can cause problems for the
project in the future. For example, if the adjacent plot to the site
is for a high-rise building then in the future when high rise building
will be constructed, it will cause a blocking of sunlight and wind on
our site. This is a future problem for our project on this site, so
this is considered as a threat.
