STORY OF MY LIFE

5 Reading for predictions

Read the first paragraph of the story by yourself and then with your partner try and answer the
following questions:

• What do you think is going to happen in the rest of the story?

• What do you think the twist* will be?
• Do you think the story will have a happy or sad ending?

About ten years ago something really strange happened to me, and I still can’t get it out of my mind. It
was just like any normal day; I was walking along the street on my way to work when I received a text
message. I looked down at my phone and to my surprise it said "GET ON THE NEXT BUS", I thought it
was spam so I ignored it, but two minutes later the same message "GET ON THE NEXT BUS" arrived,
and the same message just kept coming and coming.

I was starting to get a little scared, so I decided to follow the instruction and jump on the next bus, it
was going in the direction of my office, so it didn’t really matter that much. After about five minutes,
I got another text and this one said, "GET OFF AT THE NEXT STOP", I didn’t ignore the message this
time and I ran off the bus as quickly as I could. Once I had got off the bus, I stood beside the bus stop
hoping to get on with my normal day, but the phone vibrated again. "GO DOWN THE NEXT STREET,
DON’T GET LOST" so I started walking and turned down the first street on my right.

As I walked down the street, I could see a group of three people in sunglasses, they turned, looked at
me and then suddenly got into a car and drove away at a crazy speed. I was a little shaken and scared
but thankfully after that, the text messages stopped.

When I finally got to work, I took my phone out of my bag and that’s when I suddenly realised it wasn’t
my phone, it was my partner’s phone. I decided to call her and explain what had happened to me that
morning. However, while I was telling her the whole story she just laughed nervously and at the end
said "Oh, it was probably just some naughty teenagers".

All these years later we have never talked about that day, and even after all this time, I can’t help feeling
that there is something she isn’t telling me about that strange day.

Glossary
