Diploma in Art & Design

Project proposal template

In producing the project proposal, and in preparing for the project realisation, you should
familiarise yourself with Unit 4 of the qualification.

In particular, you should understand the assessment and grading criteria which will be
used to determine standards of achievement.

Unit 4 requires you to produce a project proposal of about 350 words, excluding the
project action plan and bibliography. Project proposals should not be so succinct that
they do not address the requirements listed below, nor should they be excessively long
and unfocused.

Your project proposal should be sufficiently challenging to ensure you have the best
possible chance of meeting the grading criteria.
Your project proposal should include:
 Centre name and number
 Candidate name and number
 Project proposal title and date
 Main area of activity/ pathway.

The project proposal must be word processed and presented under the headings listed
here:

Section 1 - Rationale
(Approximately 100 words)

This section provides you with an opportunity to reflect on, review and summarise your
progress and achievements through the first three units of the qualification in the first
year, and the knowledge, skills and understanding you have acquired; What you know
now, and what it means to you, compared with what you knew and could do before you
started the course and how this has influenced your choice of specialist industry pathway
and your project proposal.

Section 2 – Project concept

(Approximately 200 words)

This section provides an opportunity for you to clearly explain the concept and aims of
your project, the research and ideas that will support its development, what you
anticipate producing, the levels and types of resources that you will need and an
indication of the form in which you will complete and present your project realisation
within the allocated timescale.
Section 3 - Evaluation
(Approximately 50 words)

This section provides an opportunity for you to explain how you will reflect on and
evaluate your work, as both an ongoing activity and at the conclusion of the project.

You should describe how you intend to record your decision-making and how you will
document changes to your ideas as work progresses.

The evaluation should reference your stated aims and be reflective and analytical rather
than a description of actions completed.

Additional requirements, not included in the 350word limit of the

proposal:
Project action plan and timetable:
This section provides you with an opportunity to outline your planning and organisation
over a period of weeks and the activities you will need to carry out in order to
successfully complete your project in the agreed time frame. The more time and thought
you give to planning your project, the more successful it is likely to be.

It is important that you consider how you will balance ambition, time and realism in the
realisation of the project. You should also include what you are going to do, how you will
do it and by when. Remember to include: time spent sourcing materials and other
resources to conduct research, seek feedback from tutors and peers, and identify when
you will carry out independent study.

Bibliography (Harvard Format):

This section provides an opportunity to record the initial research sources, both primary
and secondary, that you intend to use.

Your sources of research should be as wide as possible and could include libraries,
galleries, books, magazines, films, computer games, websites, blogs, social media, radio
programmes, archive material etc. Where appropriate, you should use the Harvard
system of referencing. The bibliography should be continuously updated as the project
progresses.

Project Title
How did that get there?

Section 1: Rationale (approx. 150 words)

Throughout the first year of level 3 art and design we experimented with many techniques and
processes such as Lino and Mono printing, Appliqué, Batik, Cardboard relief, Alginate Hand Casting,
Stencil printing etc. And many materials such as different painting and drawing techniques with
different pens, pencils and paint Lino, Alginate, wax, thread and cardboard. I have decided to go
with two different medias, this year the first is illustration, with paint, mainly watercolour, and fine
liner, as when I reflect on last years work and my final project which was a checkerboard canvas
containing little illustrations of the LGBTQ community and my grandfather who is part of that
community I feel that illustration and working with paint and fine liner was one of my strongest
skills. The second is photography, I have chose this because over the years I have had a big interest
in photography as it inspires me and gives me a sense of freedom and creativity knowing I can
capture a special moment in time in just one image. I have been continuing my photography over
the summer a lot more and have had the opportunity to be taught by my uncle more about
photography and how cameras work, this has given me the opportunity to develop my skills to
create better outcomes.
Section 2: Project Concept (approx. 250 words)

My Unit 4 project is about misplaced objects. I chose this theme because I found it quite interesting
whenever I spotted an object that was out of place that it seemed very surreal. Through this
project I would like to communicate to the audience that surreal art can be found anywhere from
the side of a road to a river. I really want my audience to question my illustrations and photographs
and think ‘how did that get there and why is it there’ even if there is a rational explanation for it
being there. For the final piece I am considering creating a series of illustrations and possibly some
photographs of these misplaced objects which could possibly be turned into a book. For my unit 4
final project I have decided to keep it broad as there are two medias that I think I do really well in.
To create the illustrations I will be using watercolour and fine liner as it is one of my strongest ways
of working and for the photographs I will be using different types of cameras such as an iPhone
camera, a Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H400, and a Canon EOS with a 28 – 135 mm lens. To make sure my
images are the best quality they can be I will be working with Lightroom to do any necessary
editing for example brightening or darkening an image. Throughout my project I will keep referring
to the Creative Process working through that to show how my worked progressed. I will also be
researching about different artists who do illustration and photography to help inspire me and see
if I can adapt any of their techniques and processes into my work.

Section 3: Evaluation (approx. 100 words)

To get a good evaluation of my work I will be evaluating my own work, being very critical and have
an honest opinion on my work so it can be the best it can be, and so I can improve and develop any
of my skills or techniques in preparation for my final piece. I will also ask my peers and tutors for
feedback on my work such as, my design ideas, and my studies so I can work on the areas that
need improvement. I will take into consideration everyone’s opinions and feedback and develop
any areas that they have pointed out.
