Matthew Perry: a great Friend

The actor behind Chandler from Friends faced many problems in his personal life but made millions
of people laugh.

A.

Matthew Perry was born on August 19, 1969 in Massachusetts, USA. His parents got divorced when he was still
a baby and he went to live in Canada with his mother. There, Matthew studied with Justin Trudeau, who is now
Canada’s prime minister. When he was 15, Matthew moved to LA, where he started his acting career. He made
several films, but none of them were very successful.

B.

Then came the sitcom Friends, which made Matthew very famous. When he read the script, he knew Chandler was
perfect for him because they were very similar. "It wasn’t that I thought I could play Chandler; I was Chandler.", he
later said. With his colleagues Matt LeBlanc, David Schwimmer, Courteney Cox, Jennifer Aniston and Lisa Kudrow,
he helped make Friends one of the most successful series ever.

C.

Friends was Perry’s biggest success, but it was not the only one. While playing Chandler, he acted in several films,
but none of them, however, were as successful as the sitcom. After Friends came to an end in 2004 after ten
seasons, he took part in other series like Studio 60 and The Odd Couple.

D.

Matthew had a number of problems with addiction and mental health throughout his life. In his autobiography
Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing, from 2022, he admitted using drugs and alcohol while recording Friends.
He also went to a clinic for treatment at least 15 times. Apart from the problems with addiction, he also felt he
had to be funny all the time.

E.

Matthew Perry was never married and had no children, but he had relationships with several famous actresses,
including Julia Roberts, whom he went out with for around a year. Also in his book, Matthew talks about how he
broke up with her because he felt he could ‘never be enough’ for her. In 2020, he got engaged to Molly Hurwitz,
but the couple broke up in 2021.
