Dia de los muertos- mexico

Today im going to talk abou a comemoration that is known all over the world but is comemorated the
most in Mexico, the Day od the Dead.

The Day of the Dead (Spanish: Día de los Muertos)is a holiday traditionally celebrated on November 1st
and 2nd. This celebration is widely observed in Mexico, where it largely developed, and is also observed
in other places, especially by people of Mexican heritage. Although related to the Christian
remembrances for Hallowtide (Hallowmas season, that is the Western Christian season encompassing
the triduum of All Saints' Eve (Halloween), All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day), The Day of the Dead has
a much less solemn tone and is portrayed as a holiday of joyful celebration and not as a sad holiday. The
multi-day holiday involves family and friends gathering to pay respects and to remember friends and
family members who have died. These celebrations can take a humorous tone, as celebrants remember
funny events about the departed.

this holiday intends to reunite the living and dead. Families create ofrendas (Offerings) to honor their
departed family members that have passed. These altars are decorated with bright yellow marigold
flowers, photos of the departed, and the favorite foods and drinks of the one being honored. The
offerings are believed to encourage visits from the land of the dead as the departed souls hear their
prayers, smell their foods and join in the celebrations!

Day of the Dead is a rare holiday for celebrating death and life. As i already said It is unlike any holiday
where mourning is exchanged for celebration.

By doing a research i understood that this is a two days comemoration and its divided in three stages,
the first one for the spirits of the children and happens in the first of november at 12 am. The second
stage is for the spirits of adults and its on the november second at 12 am and the last one is for the
spirits of all the dead and takes place on the november second in the noon. This second day is the grand
finale and public celebration of Dia de Muertos. In more recent times, people come together in their
cities, dressed up with Calavera painted faces (Skeletons) and have parades in the streets. Cemetery
visits are also common on the last day as families usually decorate the grave sites with Marigold flowers,
gifts, and sugar skulls with the departed’s name on them. It’s customary to clean the grave stone and
restore the color.

I decided to choose this celebration because i think that it is an interesting way to look at the death and
to pay honor for those who are not here anymore, and the most common symbols of this day are , For
example, the skulls, The skulls are often drawn with a smile as to laugh at death itself and the Marigolds
are believed to be the pathways that guide the spirits to their ofrendas, this offrendas are what the
whole celebration is about; it’s a collection of offerings dedicated to the person being honored.
