Holi Festival, India

This festival is celebrated in India and Nepal and takes place on the last full moon of the Hindu
lunar month Phalguna (between February and March).

It lasts for two days, the first is known as the night of "Holika Dahan" or Chhoti Holi, and is
celebrated around a bonfire to symbolize the victory of good over evil. The second day is known as
Holi, here people are dedicated solely to celebrating and filling the entire city and all people of
color.

What people do in general is to throw colored powders freely, therefore the bodies and clothes
are completely covered by the pigments. Likewise, they sing and dance celebrating that good has
won over evil and that spring begins.

Finally, during the Holi festival, the typical food offered is Gujiyas, which are shaped like
empanadas and are stuffed with nuts.

Día de los Muertos is a two-day holiday on the first and second day of November that brings
together the living and the dead. Families create ofrendas to honor their deceased relatives. These
altars are decorated with cempasúchil flowers, candy skulls, chocolate or amaranth, pan de
muerto, water, fruit, candles, colored paper, photos of the deceased and the favorite foods and
beverages of the honoree. It is believed that ofrendas encourage visits from the land of the dead
to the land of the living, as the departed souls listen to their prayers, smell their food and join in
the celebrations.

In addition to this people usually dress up as catrinas which symbolizes death and consists of a
usually black dress with a crown of flowers and skull makeup that serves as a reminder that death
is something inevitable that everyone will experience.
