Campus Paper

What is Campus Paper?

- A campus newspaper may be mimeographed, printed, published, or distributed by any institution


or organization on campus whose name or logo appears in the masthead or editorial box.

Sections of a Campus Paper

1. FRONT PAGE
a. Nameplate. The nameplate is the engraved or printed name, logo or symbol of the newspaper.
b. Ears. Ears are little boxes in either or both sides of the nameplate.
c. Banner (Head). The banner is the principal headline which is usually written in the boldest and
biggest font.
d. Running Head. The running head is a type of head having two or more lines.
e. Headline. Headline refers to any title of any news.
f. Deck. A deck is a subordinate headline or head which is immediately placed below its mother
head to give more information about it.
g. Lead. Lead refers to the beginning of a news story.
h. News Story. The news story is the whole story or a part of the whole story about the news which
is composed of the lead and the text supporting and elaborating the lead.
i. Columns. They are horizontal divisions of the parts or texts of a newspaper.
j. Column Rules. Column rules are vertical lines that indicate the divisions of the columns.
k. Fold. It is the imaginary horizontal line that divides the paper into two.
l. Byline. A byline is the signature, name or pseudonym of the reporter who prepared the news.
m. Box. Any news material enclosed by line rules is a boxed story.
n. Cut. The cut is a metal plate bearing the newspaper's illustration.
o. Cutline. A cutline is the text accompanying photos or other art works.
p. Over line. It is a type of cutline written or shown above the photo.
q. Kicker. A kicker is a tagline above but smaller than the headline.
r. Hammer. A hammer is a type of kicker but the difference is that a hammer is bigger than the
headline.
s. Credit Line. A credit line is a line given to pay respect to the source of the story or illustration
printed.

2. NEWS PAGE
- Is a publication that is issued daily or weekly and includes local and international news stories,
advertisements, announcements, opinions, cartoons, sports news and television listings.

3. EDITORIAL PAGE
a. Folio: A folio usually contains the page number, the date of publication and the name of the
newspaper.
b. Masthead: The masthead is the editorial box containing the logo of the newspaper, names and
positions of the staff, subscription rate, the publisher and other pertinent information about the
newspaper.
c. Editorial Proper: The editorial proper is the commentary made by any of the editors (usually, of
the editor-in-chief) on any subject. It is the stand of the paper for the day.
d. Editorial Cartoon: The editorial cartoon stands by itself. This means that it is an editorial proper
or news by itself.
e. Editorial Liner: The editorial liner is simply a line of quotations or message placed below the
editorial proper or column.

4. FEATURES PAGE
- A feature story is the main, front-page article found on your newspaper. It should have the largest
title, the most compelling images, and provoke the most thought and discussion.
5. COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT PAGE
- Community development is a process where people come together to take action on what’s
important to them. At its heart, community development is rooted in the belief that all people
should have access to health, wellbeing, wealth, justice and opportunity.

6. SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY PAGE


- Science encompasses the systematic study of the structure and behavior of the physical and
natural world through observation and experiment, and technology is the application of scientific
knowledge for practical purposes.

7. SPORTS PAGE
- Sports stories are classified as news stories; therefore, what may be found in the news page may
also be found in the sports section. Other things may be found in the sports section are the sports
commentaries and sports features.
