CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

When it comes to making important life decisions, such as choosing a

career path, parental involvement can play a significant role. Parents are often

the first influencers in a child's life, and their support and guidance can impact

their child's future.

Parental guidance plays a vital role in the life of children and has a strong

influence upon them especially on two significant life events—marriage and their

vocational choice. The importance of parental influence upon their children’s

career choice is well established even across gender and racial lines (Dr. Shazia

Nawabi, et. al, 2019).

Moreover, a person's entire destiny is impacted by the crucial decisions

they make when choosing a job. A person's career is made by of all the parts

they have combined to perform in a specific order during their lifetime. To obtain

top management positions, individual must progress and engage in activities

throughout their lives, especially those connected to their line of work. Young

people and youth find this decision to be difficult task that has the potential to

either open the door for growth or close it (Felix OppusuPaapaAgyir, 2020).

A person's career plays a fundamental role in their life, not only because it

affects their personality and way of thinking but also because it determines their

pattern of income. A person's lifetime occupation is known as a career if they

want to pursue it, make it their life's work, or be successful in what they do.

However, families frequently believe that their role as parents is reduced

when their children approach high school because they expect that counselors

and students will collaborate to create a career and post-secondary education

plan. Counselors in high schools have the challenging duty of assisting numerous

students. As a result, a large number of students graduate from high school

without having any knowledge of how to choose a college or a career. The

majority of these students enroll in schools or universities in the hope that time

will pass and they will be able to decide and secure their future. As a result, these

students waste time, money, and effort, unsure of what to expect from life

Moreover, students who lack guidance in their decision-making and

professional objectives end up as first-year students at universities and colleges

around the country. When choosing their careers and post-secondary institutions,

many incoming students seem aimless and uninspired. They exhibit a lack of

readiness for decisions that could alter their lives and make unoriginal decisions.

Hence, studies continue to show that parents have a more significant

influence than teachers on career decisions and can even influence what

program their children plan to pursue in secondary school. While parents

recognize that their immediate job guidance may be effective, they may be

unaware of the fact that they can also have a significant professional impact just

by acting as examples of workers. It is important that parents understand the

straightforward methods by which they consistently communicate their ideals and

qualities because they are likely to affect career choice (Felix

OppusuPaapaAgyir, 2020).
