PROLOGUE

Scene 1

It's an hospital room. FEMI is unconscious on the

hospital bed. Labake is at a corner on the stage
praying. DARA is nervous and weeping.

SEGUN walks in and begins to talk to Dara. Their

discussion is inaudible.

Suddenly, Nurses appears on stage as they run up and

down attending to Femi. Labake intensifies her prayers
while Dara is nervous. DOCTOR NONSO walks up on stage
and the Nurses whispers words to him. He checks Femi's
body then turns to Dara and Labake.

Labake rush to Doctor Nonso first and he breaks the

sorrowful news to her. Dara breaks down in tears while
Labake begins to hit and punch Dara.

ACT 1

Scene 1

Three witches are on stage; OLORI, DUDU and KUMO. They

are reciting incantations into the calabash in their
hands.

Suddenly, NAOMI walks up the stage singing, chanting

and speaking in tongues. She knees at the center of
the stage and continues praying. Then the calabash in
the hands of the witches falls and breaks. They become
furious.

OLORI
(Furious)
What just happened?

DUDU
Who is this lady that has such effrontery to attack us?

The free witches look at Naomi, praying.

KUMO
This is Naomi Olanrewaju! The only daughter of Pastor Moses
Olanrewaju!

DUDU
(Hisses)
She deserves to be taught a lesson never to pass her
boundary.
(Dudu tries to touch Naomi but couldn't)
What is going on?

OLORI
She dwells in the secret place of the most high. And
abiding under the shadow of the Almighty, so she is
untouchable.

KUMO
Olori! What are we going to do? She can't just go like
that. She needs to learn never to pass her boundary.

DUDU
Let us check her life so we know how to attack!

The three witches carry a new calabash and recite

incantations.

DUDU
She has a thing for tall, dark and handsome men.

KUMO
I can see that she is twenty-one and wants to get married
before she's twenty-three.
3

OLORI
(Smiles)
Very good! So we can destroy her that way.

DUDU
I think we have a tall, dark and handsome man in our
captivity.

KUMO
Who is that?

DUDU
Darasimi Adegoke. The son of late Deacon Lekan Adegoke and
Deaconess Labake Adegoke.

OLORI
Very good... Dara has been under our bondage ever since he
chose to go against Christ and everything his parents
taught him.

KUMO
(Sighs)
But how do we make the two of them fall in love in such a
way that would destroy this stupid Naomi girl?

OLORI
Don't worry. There are many ways to this thing.

LIGHT OUT

Scene 2

LABAKE is dressed for Church as she gets on stage

screaming angrily.

LABAKE
Dara! Femi! Where are these boys? Dara! Femi!

DARA and his brother; FEMI walk up on stage,

grudgingly.

DARA
Mummy... what is it?

LABAKE
Are you not going for the night vigil in Church?

FEMI
(Shocked)
There's vigil in Church today?

LABAKE
You can't tell me that you don't know, because I have been
ringing the news in your ears for a week now.

DARA
4

I am not going o!

LABAKE
(Hisses)
Why won't you go?

DARA
(Softly)
I am having headache. I need to rest at home!

LABAKE
(Angrily)
Dara!

DARA
Mummy!

LABAKE
Do you know that you are setting a very bad example for
your brother.

DARA
(Stares at Femi)
Am I a bad example to you?

FEMI
(Shakes his head)
No o! Brother Dara is the best example of a brother, ever.

LABAKE
The both of you are following me to Church o!

DARA
(Angrily)
Mummy, drop it! I am not going for night vigil! Is the
Sunday headache not enough, they'd still be expecting
someone to come for Tuesday Bible study and Thursday Prayer
meeting. On top of it all, we'd still add night vigil as if
we don't have our own lives to live.

LABAKE
Dara! Why are you talking like this?

DARA
This is my time to relax and enjoy life. Not to waste it in
Church! I want to live my life.

LABAKE
(Angrily)
I keep telling you to stop saying that nonsense!
(Hisses)
Is it because of this nonsense hair style that is on your
head that you think you're enjoying life. Vanity upon
vanity, everything is vanity.

DARA
5

Yes, I know... But at least let me enjoy this vanity while

it lasts.

Dara steps back from Labake, like he is leaving the

stage.

LABAKE
So Femi, even you are not coming for vigil?

FEMI
No!

Labake sighs, nods her head and walks out of stage.

DARA
(Smiles)
Very good. This woman wants to use Church to kill us.

FEMI
Exactly! It's not like they are sharing food in the vigil
o!

DARA
(Hisses)
Besides are we not too young to be fighting battles up and
down? We should be enjoying now and fight battles later!

FEMI
Yes...

DARA
Would you like to join me in the club today?

FEMI
(Grunts)
Club? No o! I hate those loud music, alcohol and everything
in the club.

DARA
(Scoffs)
You don't like clubbing? What fun do you now want in your
life?

FEMI
I just want to be by myself and enjoy myself.

DARA
(Chuckles)
Are you alright sha?

FEMI
(Sighs)
I think I also like that thing you gave me the last time.

DARA
You mean that pill? The molly?
6

FEMI
(Excited)
Yes... Molly; the strong one.

DARA
Okay... No problem... If that's what you want, I'd get it
for you.

FEMI
Thanks so much Brother Dara!

Femi hugs Dara and they walk out of the stage.

LIGHT OUT

Scene 3

In a club setting, we see variety of people drinking

and partying. Dara and JOSEPH enters the club and
everyone hails Dara. He begins to spray them money.

One of the girls; BECCA walks up to Dara, seductively.

BECCA
Dara, my love...

DARA
Becca Baby!

BECCA
I've missed you so much.

DARA
(Smiles)
Same here. My head has not been straight without you.

BECCA
(Blushing)
Do you know we can move in together now? What else are we
waiting for?

DARA
Wait for me to get my own place and we can live together
forever.

BECCA
Okay... That's why I love you.

DARA
What's new today? I need to drink and party.

BECCA
Party... what's the occasion?

DARA
Is seeing you again, not enough to celebrate?
7

Dara and Becca sits and Ewatomi meets them with a

bottle of wine each.

EWATOMI
Mister Dara... you're yet to pay for the bottles you bought
the last time.

DARA
(Angrily)
Are you insane?

EWATOMI
What have I done wrong?

DARA
Can't you use your brain before talking?

EWATOMI
But I am right...

DARA
Even though!

BECCA
(Sighs softly)
Don't worry... Can't you see that Dara is loaded? My
boyfriend is loaded. He will pay for everything!

EWATOMI
Okay o!

Ewatomi walks away and they all continue drinking.

LIGHT OUT

Scene 4

In a Church setting, there are people sitting in

Church and talking when Dara enters sweating and
wearing a sunshade. PASTOR SEGUN approaches him.

DARA
Pastor... Good morning... afternoon sir. Happy Sunday.

SEGUN
Good afternoon, Bro Dara. Service has ended o! Are you just
coming to Church?

DARA
(Nods)
Yes sir.

SEGUN
How are you doing sir? You don't look so good.

DARA
8

Yes sir. I just ahve a little headache, I feel dizzy and

nauseous.

SEGUN
(Sighs)
Is that why you're wearing sunshades to Church?

Pastor Segun removes the sunshade and Dara grunts from

being affected by exposure to light.

DARA
(Angrily)
Please, give me back my sunshade! The lighting in this
Church is too much!

SEGUN
Bro Dara... What is wrong? Are you drunk?

DARA
Pastor! Drunk bawo? I am just not feeling well!

SEGUN
Bro Dara! Are you back to clubbing and drinking again? Is
that why you are late to Church today?

DARA
I don't drink again, Pastor!

SEGUN
In case you have forgotten, I have the Holy Spirit. And He
is a Spirit of Truth.

DARA
(Grunts)
Pastor! I had a very long night. That's the truth!

SEGUN
(Sighs)
Long night? How was your night long? I didn't see you in
the vigil we had.

DARA
(Angrily)
Pastor! Can't I live my life in peace again? Please leave
me alone o!

SEGUN
(Sighs)
Okay... Bro Dara... Just remember that; 'The wages of sin
is death!'

DARA
We know.

Pastor Segun leaves Dara and walks away. Joseph walks

up the stage and goes to meet Dara.
9

JOSEPH
How are you able to come early to Church today?

DARA
(Chuckles)
Better don't allow your Pastor see you and kill you with
questions.

JOSEPH
(Angrily)
Pastor? Abeg... me I came today because my Parents would
kill me if I don't come.

DARA
I am even here to speak with Jesus. Saturday is for fun,
while Sunday is for asking for forgiveness.

JOSEPH
You have a point. Let me go to the altar.

Joseph leaves Dara and knees at the altar. Then Naomi

walks in from Back stage. She walks up to Dara, who is
captivated by her beauty.

NAOMI
Good day sir. My name is Naomi Olanrewaju.

DARA
Hi. I am Darasimi Adegoke.

NAOMI
(Smiles)
Nice. I am the Regional Choir coordinator. And I was asked
to come and collect a letter from the resident Pastor of
this Church.

DARA
That's Pastor Segun. He should be in his office right now.

NAOMI
Can you take me there?

DARA
No problem. Anything for a beautiful damsel like you.
(Naomi blushes)
Do you have an oxygen tank with you?

NAOMI
No... Why?

DARA
You're just too breath taking.

Naomi keeps blushing as Dara leads Naomi inside the

Church.

LIGHT OUT

Scene 5

Dara and Naomi are seen on stage, wearing picnic dress

and sitting on a mat and with a basket of food between
them. They are both smiling radiantly at each other.
They whisper words to each other and laugh. Naomi

they both start eating.

ACT 2

Scene 1

[The scene begins with Naomi's beautiful and melodious

voice singing against the Kingdom of darkness from
back stage.]

In a dark coven, three witches walk up on stage, they

are disturbed and confused as they hear the voice
singing.

OLORI
(Furious)
Dudu! Kumo! What is going on? After all the reinforcements
that I have given you people. Why is Naomi still not
destroyed?

DUDU
(Sighs)
Olori! It's not our fault!

KUMO
(Distressed)
Olori! We have done all we can but she keeps growing
stronger and stronger.

OLORI
(More furious)
How dare you say she's growing stronger? Do you know who I
am? Do you know the amount of destinies I have destroyed.
This stupid Naomi cannot be any different.

KUMO
Olori... What are we going to do?

Olori carries a calabash and recites incantations. She

closes the calabash.

DUDU
How will this work out?

OLORI
Why don't you just watch and see!

They all burst into laughter.

LIGHT OUT

Scene 2

In a beautifully decorated private lounge. We see Dara

entering the Lounge with Naomi. Naomi is wearing a
beautiful flowing gown, heels and a matching purse
while Dara is wearing a simple shirt which he tuck in
his trouser. They both have a radiant smile on their
12

faces but Naomi has a blindfold on her face.

Dara leads her till they get to the only set chair and
table at the center of the room.

NAOMI
(Chuckles)
Dara! Is any of this really necessary?

DARA
(Chuckles)
Don't worry. You'd love this one.

Dara removes the blindfold from her face. Naomi is

taken aback by what she sees.

DARA (CONT'D)
Happy birthday, Babe.

NAOMI
(Blushing)
Wow! Dara, did you organize all this?

DARA
(Smirks)
I had a little help. But I did most of the work.

She hugs Dara immediately.

NAOMI
I love you Dara!

DARA
I love you too.

Dara helps her to sit, then he sits opposite her.

Naomi looks around the lounge.

NAOMI
Why is this place empty? I thought this place is always
busy.

DARA
(Nods)
It's always busy! But not for today.

NAOMI
(Wowed)
Dara! Did you shut down the entire Lounge for me?

DARA
(Smirks)
Of course I did! You know I promised to make this year's
birthday one to remember.

NAOMI
13

(Blushing)
Thanks so much, Babe.

A waiter walks up to them with a tray of fried chicken

and juice and place it on their table.

DARA
I know how much you love their Chicken here, so I made sure
we can eat as much as possible.

NAOMI
(Blushing)
This is my best birthday ever!

DARA
(Chuckles)
The best of today is yet to come!

Dara stands up and deeps his hand in his pocket.

NAOMI
(Chuckles)
Don't tell me you are bringing bird from your pocket?

Dara goes on a knee and brings out a ring from his

pocket. Naomi gasps for air.

DARA
(Smiles)
From the very first day I saw you, I've loved you. I can't
survive without you in my life and I don't think I want to
spend another day of my life without you by my side. You
are my sunshine and that is why I am asking you today to
shine your sun in my life forever. Naomi Olanrewaju, Will
you marry me?

Naomi fights back tears as she gives Dara her hands

and screams for joy.

NAOMI
Yes! Yes! Yes! I'd marry you a thousand times!

Dara inserts the ring in her finger and they both hug.

DARA
Can you believe it? We're getting married!

NAOMI
(Nods)
My parents would be so excited!

The waiter returns with more food. Dara and Naomi sit
down to continue eating as they blush, laugh and stare
at each other, joyfully.

LIGHT OUT
14

Scene 3

FOLAKE (45) is in the living room eating. NOAH enters

the stage, on a phone call. He sits close to Folake.
After a while, Naomi enters with a lot of excitement;
to share her good news. She flaunts her ring in front
of Folake.

FOLAKE
(Curiously)
What's going on?

NAOMI
(Excited)
Guess who's getting married!

FOLAKE
(Happy but Shocked)
You must be joking!

Folake is shocked but excited.

NAOMI
No Mum! See for yourself!

Naomi moves closer to Folake and shows her the ring.

Noah ends his phone conversation and he joins their
discussion.

FOLAKE
(Hisses)
This ring looks cheap!

NAOMI
(Scoffs)
Even though! What matters is that my dreams is falling into
place. I'm getting married before 23 years.

Noah is shocked at their discussion. Folake grins and

hugs her daughter.

FOLAKE
Make sure I meet him first before you announce any wedding
o!

NOAH
(Angrily)
Wedding? Mummy! Are you seriously allowing Naomi get
married now?

Naomi and Folake hisses.

FOLAKE
Name one reason why I shouldn't allow my daughter get
married?
15

NOAH
(Scoffs)
I can think of a thousand reasons, but first of all...
isn't she too young?

FOLAKE
Too young? Do you know the age that girls used to get
married? Do you know how old I was when I married your
father?

NOAH
(Scoffs)
Who is this guy she is even getting married to?

NAOMI
(Scoffs)
Noah! Why aren't you happy for me? Marriage is a thing of
joy.

NOAH
Because you are making a big mistake!

Fighting back tears, Naomi runs inside the house.

Folake hisses at Noah and follows her daughter.

LIGHT OUT

Scene 4

In a small living room, Labake (39) is screaming at

FEMI (16).

LABAKE
(Angrily)
Why are you like this? You keep acting like you are not a
Christian! Is this what they taught you in the last Bible
Study?

FEMI
(Scoffs)
Mummy! It's not my fault!

LABAKE
(Angrily)
Will you shut up! Femi! I am tired of this nonsense that
you and your brother do all the time!

Dara enters the house and he is surprised to see his

younger brother; Femi is in trouble again. He bows
before Labake.

DARA
Mummy... Good evening ma.

LABAKE
(Softly)
16

Dara! Welcome home!

DARA
(Staring at Femi)
What happened?

No response as Femi frowns at Dara.

DARA
(Excited)
Anyways... Guys! I have a good news to share.

LABAKE
What's it?

DARA
(Excited)
I'm getting married!

Femi is excited as he hails Dara. But Labake is

shocked and silent.

FEMI
(Excited)
How did you ask her?

DARA
I took her out for her birthday to her favorite place and I
ordered her favorite food and then I asked her to marry me.

FEMI
I'm so happy for you bro.

Dara notices Labake isn't excited.

DARA
Mummy! What's wrong? Why aren't you happy for me?

LABAKE
(Scoffs)
Marriage? Dara? Is that the next thing right now?

DARA
(Angrily)
Mummy! What is the right thing now?

FEMI
Mummy. Leave Brother Dara o! It is his decision if he wants
to get married!

LABAKE
(Hisses)
Femi, go inside! I want to talk to Dara!

Labake rolls her eyes at Femi as he grudgingly walk

inside the house.
17

Labake taps the empty space on the couch she is

sitting and Dara sits beside her, with a frown on his
face.

DARA
What is it Mummy?

LABAKE
Dara, marriage is beautiful, but when you get married,
where do you want to live with your wife? How do you want
to feed her? When you have your own children, how would you
take care of the child? These are things you should take
into consideration!

DARA
(Scoffs)
Mummy!

LABAKE
Besides, you still have not decided to give your life to
Christ. It is only Jesus that can help you. You can't do it
by your power!

DARA
(Scoffs)
Mum! I am already a worker in Church. I clean the Church
and I help the Media Department! That is enough for your
Jesus, I am not giving my life to any Jesus!

LABAKE
Do you think you can sustain a happy and peaceful marriage
on your own?

DARA
Mummy! You and Daddy gave your life to Christ and where did
it lead the both of you?

LABAKE
(Sighs)
Our situation is different.

DARA
And so is my life.
(Brief pause)
Mummy! I am getting married, and I don't need any Jesus for
it.

LABAKE
(Deep sighs)
Dara... you are just putting unnecessary burden on
yourself! You are just 21. You are still too young for
marriage.

DARA
(Angrily)
Mummy! I have my Degree! I have served my country. I have a
18

source of income. What else do I need before I am no longer

too young for marriage?

LABAKE
(Sighs)
Jesus! You need Jesus.

Dara folds his arms then shakes his head. He looks

away from Labake.

LIGHT OUT

Scene 5

Andrew and Femi are on stage, preparing to go to

Church.

FEMI
(Excited)
Andrew... Guess what?

ANDREW
What's up?

FEMI
My brother is getting married?

ANDREW
(Shocked)
Which brother?

FEMI
(Scoofs)
How many brother do I have?

ANDREW
(Shocked)
Brother Dara is getting married? Why? How? When? Is he not
too young?

FEMI
(Hisses)
You sound like my Mum right now. No one is too young to get
married.

ANDREW
Let me rephrase that. Is he matured financially,
emotionally, spiritually, psychologically for marriage?

FEMI
(Angrily)
Are you saying my brother is not matured?

ANDREW
Of course not! I am only asking if he is ready for
marriage.
19

FEMI
Of course he is.

ANDREW
Okay o!
(Clears throat)
Can we start going to Church now?

FEMI
(Sighs)
I think I am hungry o! I want to eat before we go to
Church.

ANDREW
(Scoffs)
Hungry? But you already ate not quite long now!

FEMI
(Sighs)
I think it's stomach pain o! Not hunger.

ANDREW
What are you saying?

FEMI
I don't think I am feeling too good. I need to rest.

ANDREW
When did you become like this Femi? We always go for this
Saturday prayer meeting together. Is it because your Mum is
not at home?

FEMI
This has nothing to do with my Mum. I'm not just feeling
well.

ANDREW
(Sighs)
Femi... I hope all is well with you?

FEMI
Why won't all be well with me?

ANDREW
When last did you read your Bible? When was the last time
you prayed? This past few days, you've been skipping Church
too much. Not to talk of the ungodly relationship you are
having with Mary in our class.

FEMI
(Angrily)
Ungodly?
(Hisses)
So I can't have a girlfriend again right?

ANDREW
20

Truth be told! You are too young to be in a relationship!

How old are you; 15, 16?

FEMI
I am not going to answer that stupid question!

ANDREW
Femi... Hope it's not pear pressure that is affecting you?

FEMI
What do you mean?

ANDREW
I noticed that ever since you became friends with Gideon
and Bayo in Church, you started misbehaving.

FEMI
Misbehaving? I am not misbehaving! I am simply having the
fun that I deserve at my age!

ANDREW
Femi! If sinners entice you, donot consent!

FEMI
And who are the sinners?

ANDREW
(Sighs)
Ungodly people... but I need to ask you one question.

FEMI
What's that?

ANDREW
Why are you in a relationship?

FEMI
What sort of question is that? It's because I love her.

ANDREW
(Sighs)
Okay... you love her... And where is Jesus in that your
relationship?

FEMI
Jesus? What does Jesus have to do with my love life?

ANDREW
1 Corinthians 10:23; 'All things are lawful for me, but all
things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but
all things edify not!'

FEMI
(Scoffs)
What's your point, Andrew?
21

ANDREW
Your relationship might be lawful but is it edifying?

FEMI
(Hisses)
Leave me alone, Andrew!

ANDREW
You are a child of God, Femi. And the Bible says; 'Blessed
is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor
stands in the path of sinners, nor sits in the seat of the
scornful; But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and in
His law he meditates day and night'

FEMI
(Hisses)
Are you done?
(Andrew nods)
You can be going to Church now. I am not in the mood to go
again.

Andrew sighs and walks out of stage.

LIGHT OUT

Scene 6

Naomi is laying on the couch, deep in thought. EVE

walks up the stage, worried about Naomi.

EVE
(Worried)
Naomi... You're here? I've been trying to reach you, but
you've not been picking up. What's wrong? Why are you so
moody?

Naomi looks at Eve.

NAOMI
(Sighs)
Nothing. I'm fine.

EVE
No... you don't look fine.

Naomi sighs, she shows Eve her engagement ring.

NAOMI
(Grins)
Eve! I told my brother and my mum that I am getting married
and Noah flared up!

Eve is taken aback.

EVE
(Shocked)
22

You are what?

NAOMI
(Smiles)
I'm getting married.

EVE
(Scoffs)
You must be joking!

NAOMI
(Frowns)
No I'm not. Dara finally proposed.

EVE
(Sighs)
Dara? Who is Dara? Is it that boy that looks like an
upcoming artist that you met few weeks ago?

NAOMI
One month! We met one months ago and my life has been
peaceful since then.

EVE
Did you ask God before agreeing to this marriage? What did
God say?

NAOMI
(Chuckles)
Eve... Why are you talking like this? This is 21st Century,
it is in the olden days that they ask Jesus before getting
married.

EVE
(Scoffs)
Olden days... Have you forgotten that Jesus Christ is the
same yesterday, today and forever.

NAOMI
(Angrily)
Abeg, Eve... Will you just be happy for me or not?

Eve sighs and force a smile but the smile disappears

as quickly as it came.

EVE
I'm trying to be happy about this, but everything feels off
and I have not even seen this Dara before.

NAOMI
(Angrily)
Now, I understand you and my brother perfectly! You don't
have a boyfriend and my brother doesn't have a girlfriend,
so the both of you are jealous of me because I am getting
married!
23

EVE
(Chuckles softly)
Jealous? I am not jealous of you. I am only worried for
you!

NAOMI
(Scoffs)
Worried?

EVE
Who is this man you are getting married to? Is he born
again?

NAOMI
And so? What if he is not born again?

Eve is shocked.

EVE
Are you saying he is not born again?

NAOMI
(Scoffs)
He is a good person and a Christian now!

EVE
Good person? Do you know what it means to be a Christian? A
Christian is a person who believes in Jesus as the savior
of the world and does His will.

NAOMI
He is a Christian! He attends Church once in a while. He is
a very good person.

EVE
Naomi! How many times do I have to tell you that if a
Monkey sleeps on a bed, that doesn't make it a man. There
is more to being a Christian than just attending Church
Service.

NAOMI
(Yells angrily)
Even though. I am a born again Christian. And according to
1Corintians 7:14; my salvation would cover for the both of
us.

EVE
(Sucks teeth)
Are you serious right now, Naomi?

NAOMI
(Sighs)
Eve. I love Dara!

EVE
(Sucks teeth)
24

Naomi! Love is blind, but marriage will open your eyes.

Naomi hisses, folds her arms and looks away from Eve.

Eve says goodbye to Naomi and walks out of the stage.

NAOMI
(Sighs)
It's been a while since I read my Bible o! Let me just read
Philemon today; since it's very short.
(Suddenly her phone rings)
Wow... Dara; my love is calling me.
(She picks the call)
Hello love... I miss you to...

Naomi closes her Bible and walks out of the stage.

ACT 3

Scene 1

In a small church setting. Dara and Femi walks up on

stage first. They start sweeping and mopping the
stage. A few people walk in from another direction.
They all meet at the center of the stage and exchange
pleasantries.

BAYO, and EBUN moves closer to Dara and Femi with

smiles on their faces.

EBUN
Brother Dara. I really like your devotion and dedication to
the things of God. You are a very good and hardworking man.

BAYO
Yes, I agree. You are the only worker that I know would
come to clean the Church very early. It is only you in this
Sanitation department and Media Department that works
diligently. God bless you sir.

DARA
It is not me o! It's God! We're just doing everything to
the glory of God.

EBUN
(Smiles)
Femi... there is vacancy in our Choir Department o! There
was a day I heard you sing and heaven almost came down.

FEMI
Thanks ma... But I am not interested.

EBUN
(Frowns at Femi)
I just hope that Dara's good nature rubs off on his younger
brother. Femi is nothing like his brother. He now comes to
Church very late and he comes for cleaning only when he
feels like.

FEMI
It's not my fault now! I am just always busy!

EBUN
(Rolls her eyes at Femi)
Busy indeed!

DARA
Don't worry Sister Ebun. I'd talk to my brother! He will do
better!

EBUN
(Smiles at Dara)
Thanks Brother Dara... God bless your labor of love.
26

(Ebun looks round)

This one that you guys have done all the work. What is left
for us to do?

DARA
Nothing. Just to arrange the chairs.

They all arrange the chairs then Dara walks out of the
stage. Ebun leaves the stage also, but Bayo and Femi
remain on stage.

BAYO
Femi... I've been meaning to ask you one question.

FEMI
What's that, Bayo?

BAYO
Why is your life so boring?

FEMI
(Scoffs)
What do you mean?

BAYO
Do you even have fun in your life? All you do is follow
your brother to Church. Why can't you be like your brother?
Go clubbing... Have fun with girls... What do you and your
girlfriend even do for fun?

FEMI
What my girlfriend and I do is none of your business.

BAYO
(Hisses)
How old are you?

FEMI
Sixteen.

BAYO
Look at you o! People younger than you are living life. All
you do is follow your brother to clean the Church. I am
sure your girlfriend is even bored in that your
relationship!

FEMI
(Sighs)
But...

BAYO
(Interrupts)
You don't have an excuse! See... you need fun in your life.
Even God saw man in the Bible and saw that it is not good
for man to be boring. That's why he created Eve.
27

FEMI
But the Bible says 'It's not good for a man to be alone'
not boring.

BAYO
(Hisses)
Sorry o! Bible scholar! You need to be a big boy o! Don't
you know that very soon you'd be in the University. And the
University is not meant for small boys!

FEMI
(Sighs)
That's true o!

They both walk out of stage.

LIGHT OUT

Scene 2

In a little club, we see a group of people drinking,

dancing and having fun. Dara enters the club and he is
hailed by everybody. Becca walks up to Dara
seductively but he push her away.

DARA
(Angrily)
Becca! How many times do I have to tell you? You and I
can't work again!

BECCA
(Angrily)
Dara! You can't be serious about that!

DARA
Am I laughing?

BECCA
(Tearful)
Dara! After four abortions that almost took my life, you're
telling me that it's over?

DARA
And so? I didn't force you to do the abortions. We both
agreed to it!

BECCA
(Sighs)
Okay... Okay... I know there is another woman in your life,
but I don't mind being your side piece! I just can't loose
you!

DARA
(Sighs)
Okay... Now you're talking! I also don't mind you being by
my side. So you can help me in areas that she isn't
28

helping.

Becca hugs Dara.

BECCA
(Excited)
Thanks Dara...

DARA
But you need to know that I love my Fiance.

BECCA
I don't mind.

Joseph calls Dara to sit beside him. Dara and Becca

goes to sit beside Joseph.

DARA
Guy! Today was a very stressful day.

JOSEPH
And that's why we have clubs and women. They were created
solely for relieving our stress!

Dara laughs and a waiter walks up to Dara and gives

him a cup of alcohol.

DARA
I need a vacation!

JOSEPH
You really need it. Maybe after you get married, you can go
and have your honeymoon in Maldives or Malawi.

DARA
(Sighs)
Speaking about wedding. I really need money for this
wedding o!

JOSEPH
Didn't I tell you before you proposed?

DARA
I want to have a big wedding. The kind that would be the
talk of the town.

JOSEPH
How is that going to happen?

DARA
I have a list of ideas to make quick money. Yahoo is going
to be our last resort.

JOSEPH
What's number one on your list?
29

DARA
We open a fake go fund me account.

JOSEPH
(Laughs)
Go fund me? That can't work!
(Sighs)
But I think I know what would work.

DARA
What is it?

Joseph whispers to Dara's ears and they both laugh in

agreement.

EWATOMI storms inside the club, she angrily looks

round and spots Dara. She grabs him by his neck and
screams at him.

EWATOMI
(Screams furiously)
Dara! Where is my money?

DARA
What do you mean? How many times do I have to tell you that
I will pay you later.

EWATOMI
You this broke boy! You keep promising to pay me and yet
you don't pay. Today you will pay me!

Dara looses his anger and flares up.

DARA
(Angrily)
What is it? Am I the first person to be owing you? Why are
you acting like I'm even the only one.

EWATOMI
You better get out of here if you will not pay me!

DARA
I am not leaving until I finish my drink.

Dara frees himself from Ewatomi's grip. He takes his

drink and continues drinking. Ewatomi angrily snatch
his drink and pours it on Dara's body.

EWATOMI
You are insane if you think I would allow you finish the
drink!

Dara angrily jumps on Ewatomi and begins to beat her.

Some people in the club run away, others try to
separate them. They successfully separate them then,
Ewatomi leaves the stage in pain. Dara looks at Joseph
30

panting.

DARA
This is one of the reasons we need money. To avoid
embarrassments like this.

Joseph nods and leads Dara out of stage.

LIGHT OUT

Scene 3

Naomi is on stage, praying when her phone rings. She

looks at it and she is glad that Dara is calling her.
She picks it and becomes engrossed in the phone
conversation with Dara.

Noah walks in and Naomi ends the conversation. Noah

sits next to her but she ignores him. Noah looks at
her and sighs.

NOAH
So we're still not on talking terms?
(No response)
No matter how long you refuse to talk to me, I will still
not allow you to get married to someone that I am not sure
of.

NAOMI
(Angrily)
Why must you be sure of him? I am the one getting married
to him. I am the one who should be sure, and I am sure!

NOAH
(Sighs)
Tell me about this guy you want to marry. How old is he?
What does he do for a living? Is he a born again Christian?

NAOMI
(Smiles)
Well... His name is Darasimi Adegoke. He is twenty-one
years old. He is tall, dark and handsome. He works for a
fashion agency. And he is a Christian.

NOAH
Wow! He sounds like a cool guy.
(Sighs)
But why haven't I seen him before? Why hasn't he visited
us before?

NAOMI
Dara is a very private person. He doesn't like going out or
meeting a lot of people.

NOAH
(Scoffs)
31

Really? So it is Mum and I that are a lot of people now?

NAOMI
Don't worry! Dara will visit us very soon.

NOAH
(Deep Sigh)
Why do I still feel so uneasy about this guy you are
marrying?

NAOMI
(Frowns)
Are you asking me? How should I know?

NOAH
(Sighs)
Are you sure he is a born again Christian.

NAOMI
He is a worker in his Church. He is in the sanitation and
media department.

NOAH
Wow! That's nice! But is he born again?

NAOMI
What does that have to do with anything?

NOAH
(Shocked)
Naomi? Are you for real right now? Do you know who you are?
Have you even been reading your Bible at all?

NAOMI
Of course I have been reading my Bible.

NOAH
The Bible says; 'Be not unequally yoked with
unbelievers...'

NAOMI
(Interrupts sharply)
Dara is not an unbeliever! I already told you that he is a
worker in his church!

NOAH
(Sighs)
He is a worker, but he is not born again! Meaning he has
not given his life to Jesus. Meaning he doesn't believe in
Jesus as his Lord and personal savior. Meaning he is an
unbeliever!

NAOMI
(Angrily)
Whether you like it or not! I am marrying Dara!
32

NOAH
I am not saying you shouldn't marry Dara! What I just want
you to do is to pray to God. Make sure He is God's will for
your life!

Naomi walks out of the stage.

LIGHT OUT

Scene 4

Labake is sitting on stage when Dara walks in, going

for work.

DARA
Mummy... I'm going to work.

LABAKE
Okay... I am also going out in the afternoon.

DARA
Okay ma.

LABAKE
By the way. When are you going to change your hair back to
the normal way it's meant to be.

DARA
What's wrong with the way my hair is?

LABAKE
Everything is wrong with it. Is this the hair style that a
Child of God should have on his head?

DARA
(Scoffs)
This is one of the reasons why I don't want to be born
again. I just want to live my life free of all these
nonsense rules and regulations.

LABAKE
Dara... What are you saying? What nonsense rules and
regulations?

DARA
If I give my life to Christ, I won't be able live my life.
I can't have fun with women again. I can't drink when I
want to drink, I cant live my life as I want to, just
because of one 'yeye' Jesus.

LABAKE
Why are you talking like this, DARA?

DARA
I am simply saying the truth. Jesus will understand me and
know that I can't live a boring life. I can't stop going to
33

Club because of him, I can't stop drinking or following the

latest fashion trend because of Jesus.

LABAKE
Dara...

DARA
(Interrupts sharply)
Mummy! I am late for work.

Labake shakes her head and walks out. Dara moves a

little like he is walking out of the stage when Lizzy
walks up the stage, angry and heavily pregnant.

LIZZY
(Angrily)
Dara! I knew I'd find you here!

DARA
(Shocked)
Lizzy! Long time!

LIZZY
(Yells angrily)
Don't Lizzy me at all! Do you know what I've been through
because of you?

DARA
What is wrong?
(Looks at her protruding belly)
Who's responsible for this nonsense in your stomach?

LIZZY
Are you kidding me? It's yours of course!

DARA
Mine? Didn't I tell you to get rid of this nonsense you
call pregnancy?

LIZZY
Abortion? You want me to go for an abortion? Over my dead
body. I would never kill our unborn child.

DARA
Then that is your cup of tea!

LIZZY
So because of our baby, that's why you've refused to talk
to me?

DARA
This child is yours, not mine. As far as I know, you are
dead to me!

LIZZY
You are bluffing!
34

DARA
I am getting married, Lizzy. And neither you nor your child
is going to stop me!

LIZZY
I heard you're getting married. To that Naomi girl right?

DARA
And so?

LIZZY
Dara... you destroyed my life... I am going to destroy
yours.

Lizzy walks out of the stage angrily.

LIGHT OUT

Scene 5

Joseph, Ebun and Dudu are on stage dressed in white

garment. They are anxious for Dara'a arrival. Dara
runs inside, panting heavily.

JOSEPH
(Angrily)
Dara... what took you so long?

DARA
I had a minor issue to handle!
(Shocked to see Ebun)
Sister Ebun... what are you doing here?

EBUN
I'm here to make money o!

JOSEPH
I told her about this business deal and she jumped on it.
Country is hard and everyone wants money!

DARA
Wow! What about our client?

DUDU
Our client messaged me not quiet long. They would soon be
here o! We need to hurry!

DARA
Okay... Okay... Hope we have not forgotten our lines?

JOSEPH
We remember!

Dara opens his bag and brings out his own white
garment. He hurriedly wears it with the assistance of
others. As soon as Dara is done dressing, they all run
35

out of stage.

EDWIN and BISOLA walk up the stage, nervous and

feeling lost.

EDWIN
Good day! Is anyone here?

BISOLA
Darling... Are you sure this is the place?

EDWIN
Of course! This is the address they sent to me!

BISOLA
But there is no one here!

Suddenly music starts playing. Joseph, Ebun and Dudu

dance on stage and display their dance to Edwin and
Bisola to impress them. Dara dances inside. He
displays himself until Edwin and Bisola knees before
him.

Dara looks at them and whispers to Joseph.

JOSEPH
Our holy prophet says you have a lot of problems... You
want a lot of money and children so that your marriage
would be blissful.

EDWIN
(Nods)
Yes sir...

BISOLA
(Tearful)
Please help us sir!

Dara whispers to Joseph.

JOSEPH
It is not us that would help you! It is God. We are nothing
but his servant.

BISOLA
Okay... please tell your God to help us.

Dara whispers to Joseph.

JOSEPH
Our holy prophet says you should rejoice because your
problem has a solution.

Edwin and Bisola begins to rejoice. Dara whispers to

Joseph.
36

EDWIN
We thank God o!

JOSEPH
But you will need money to make money.

EDWIN
(Exclaims)
Ah! How much?

Dara whispers to Joseph.

JOSEPH
Twenty million naira

Bisola and Edwin exclaims angrily as they stand up.

The music stops.

EDWIN
(Angrily)
We said we are broke. We don't have money... you're telling
us to pay twenty million to make money. It's like you
people are mad?

JOSEPH
It is not us that is asking for the twenty million, it is
God! Are you saying our God is mad?

EDWIN
You and your stupid God is mad.
(To Bisola)
Darling... let's leave this place!

Edwin and Bisola walks out angrily.

Dara and the others drop on the floor, tired and

panting. They rain curses on Edwin and Bisola.

ACT 4

Scene 1

Femi is alone on stage. He is in his school uniform

but restless until MARY walks up to him, wearing the
same school uniform as him.

FEMI
(Sighs)
What took you so long? I was beginning to think you'd not
show up.

MARY
I had to make sure no one was watching before leaving the
class.

FEMI
I miss you so much.

They both hug.

MARY
(Scoffs then smiles)
I missed you too.

FEMI
I love you.

MARY
(Blushes)
I love you too.

FEMI
Should we just skip school and go somewhere where we can
have fun?

MARY
Like where?

FEMI
There's this cool place I always see on my way to school.
It looks good.

MARY
Olive Lounge? That place is a bit expensive. Do you have
the money for that place?

FEMI
Of course I do!

Femi brings out some money from his pocket.

MARY
(Shocked)
Femi! How did you get this money?
38

FEMI
I have my ways.

Suddenly Andrew shows up and interrupts them.

ANDREW
(Angrily)
What's going on here!

FEMI
Andrew!

ANDREW
(Yells angrily)
Femi! Mary! What are the both of you doing here? Shouldn't
you be in class right now?

MARY
(Hisses)
Shouldn't you be in class too?

ANDREW
(Scoffs)
The Vice-Principal sent me on an errand, that's why I'm not
currently in class. And in case you have forgotten I am the
assistant head boy.

FEMI
Well... we're having Further Maths and that subject is too
boring.

ANDREW
Really? You are here to create fun and escape a boring
class? Do you know what the school will do to the both of
you, if they catch you here at this time? Coupled with the
fact that you are a boy and a girl.

FEMI
Well... As my best friend, you can just keep this a secret
and let us be.

ANDREW
No! As your best friend, I am going to let this one slide.
Go to class now and never do a thing like this again!

FEMI
(Scoffs)
Okay!

Femi and Mary grudgingly walk away.

LIGHT OUT

Scene 2

Naomi and Dara are holding hands and discussing as

39

they walk up the stage.

NAOMI
I have a choir rehearsal tomorrow. So I might not be
available for our date tomorrow.

DARA
(Angrily)
Choir rehearsal again? Why...?

NAOMI
I must do the work of Him that sent me while it is day. For
the night comes, when no man can work.

DARA
Which stupid work is that? Can you even hear yourself?

NAOMI
(Sighs)
What now? What do you want me to do?

DARA
I am your fiance; we are engaged to be married. Is this how
you are going to be doing when we get married? Don't you
know that very soon, we'd become one?

NAOMI
(Sighs)
I know... I'd surely create time for you. But I can't
completely leave God aside like you want me to. I will
always serve God o!

DARA
(Hisses)
And what significant thing has God done in your life?

NAOMI
A lot o!

DARA
How sure are you that it was God?

NAOMI
(Sighs)
What do you want me to do Dara?

DARA
Stop all this your Church this, Rehearsal that. Prayer
meeting this, Bible study that. Spend time with me!

NAOMI
But I am spending time with you now!

DARA
(Sighs)
It's not enough. I want more!
40

NAOMI
More...

DARA
You know that you've still not given me my right.

NAOMI
Your right? What's your right?

DARA
We are getting married. We should start cohabiting. We
should be living a couple's life from now on. Your body is
mine, and my body is yours.

NAOMI
(Sighs)
Dara... Marriage is honorable with the Bed undefiled.

DARA
We don't have to do it on the bed. We do it on the couch in
the living room or in the kitchen or on the floor. So that
the bed will not be defiled.

NAOMI
(Sighs)
That is not what the scripture is saying!

DARA
(Scoffs)
Do you love me, Naomi?

NAOMI
I do!

DARA
If you love me, then you will do my wish!

NAOMI
(Sighs)
I'd think about it.

DARA
Don't go and think about it. Give me a response right now!

NAOMI
(Sighs)
Okay... No problem... But you stay with your Mum. I cannot
come and start living with you and your Mum!

DARA
I'm working on getting my own place.

NAOMI
(Nods)
Okay.. When you get your own place, we can move in together
as you want.
41

DARA
(Smiles)
Better... That's why I love you.

NAOMI
I love you to.

DARA
Also... we need to talk about the songs you listen to? Why
will you be listening to those boring people like Victoria
Orenze, Theophilus Sunday, Dunsin Oyekan, Nathaniel Bassey?
When Asake is there. Not to talk of Wizkid, Burna Boy,
Naira Marley, Nicki Minaj and others.

NAOMI
But...

DARA
(Interrupts)
No Buts... You will stop listening to those people. Spice
your life up a bit! You need to be fun and lively!

NAOMI
Okay... But... With all these changes, I want you to
remember that you've still not met my parents. Especially
my Mum. I can't even move in with you until you meet my
Mum.

DARA
No problem. We can meet her tomorrow!

Naomi smiles and they walk out of the stage.

Scene 3

Joseph is sitting alone on stage focused on his phone

when MRS OKORO walks in with a broom in her hand.

JOSEPH
Good morning, Mummy!

MRS OKORO
Good morning. Have you swept the floor this morning?

JOSEPH
(Nods)
Yes ma!

MRS OKORO
(Scoffs)
Which floor did you sweep? Is it this same floor that I am
seeing that is still very dirty?

JOSEPH
Mummy! I already swept the floor!
42

Mrs Okoro throws the broom at Joseph.

MRS OKORO
Sweep the floor again!

Joseph stands up while still pressing his phone.

MRS OKORO
Joseph! Is it woman that you are chatting with?

JOSEPH
(Chuckles)
No Mummy!

MRS OKORO
Then who are you chatting with on the phone?

JOSEPH
It's my friend; Dara.

MRS OKORO
(Angrily)
Dara? Which Dara?

JOSEPH
The same Dara!

MRS OKORO
Why are you still friends with that Dara? How many times do
I have to tell you to stop being friends with him?

JOSEPH
Why will I do that? You're yet to give me a reason.

MRS OKORO
(Angrily)
You want to tell me that you don't know that Dara is a very
bad person?

JOSEPH
Bad person? How?

MRS OKORO
(Hisses)
I just have a word of advice for you, Joseph. Show me your
friend and I'd tell you who you are. Evil communications
corrupts good manners!

JOSEPH
(Sighs)
Are you saying all this because Dara overreacted the other
day? Dara is not a bad person, he only has a little anger
issues.

MRS OKORO
Little anger issues?
43

(Hisses)
You better don't wait for his evil anger issues to
implicate you before you wise up! A little word is enough
for the wise!

Mrs Okoro walks away. Joseph rolls his eyes at her.

LIGHT OUT

Scene 4

Dara is sitting alone on a couch, nervous. He keeps

looking around the living room until Folake enters and
Naomi is behind her. Dara bows to greet her.

DARA
Good afternoon ma.

FOLAKE
(To Naomi)
Is this the man you said you want to marry?

NAOMI
(Smiles)
Yes Mummy.

Folake scans Dara from up to down.

FOLAKE
(Smiles at Naomi)
You have good eyes o! Tall, dark and handsome.
(Dara and Naomi are blushing)
Hope he is also rich?

There is silence in the room. Dara is unsure of what

to say.

NAOMI
(Stutters)
Mummy! He's working.

FOLAKE
I know. Why will he want to get married, if he's not
working
(To Dara)
Do you have the money to take care of my daughter? I can't
let my daughter marry a poor man o!

DARA
(Stutters)
Ye... Yes ma.

FOLAKE
Okay. In that case, you can marry my daughter.

Naomi and Dara are excited.

44

NAOMI
(Smiles)
Thank you Mummy.

FOLAKE
Don't thank me o! You know he still has to meet your
father.

NAOMI
(Hisses)
Daddy that is not always around.

FOLAKE
Then call him and tell him you want to see him urgently!

NAOMI
Okay ma.

Folake sits on a couch.

FOLAKE
Young man...

NAOMI
(Interrupts)
Mummy! His name is Dara!

FOLAKE
Darasimi! With this your hair color and your dressing. Are
you born again?

NAOMI
(Sharply)
Yes he is! He is born again.

Naomi and Dara glare at each other.

FOLAKE
As far as he is born again, he already has your father's
approval. And mine too.

Naomi hugs Folake, excitedly.

NAOMI
Thanks Mummy.

Folake walks out of the stage. Naomi sits beside Dara.

Dara frowns at her and raises his hand to hit her but
he hesitates.

DARA
Why did you lie?

NAOMI
Lie about what?
45

DARA
You said I am born again. You and I know that's not true.

NAOMI
I know. And I love you regardless. But my parents would not
understand.

DARA
Hope marrying you will not mean that I would have to give
my life to one stupid Jesus?

NAOMI
(Scoffs)
Why are you talking like you are fighting with Jesus?

DARA
I am just saying o!

NAOMI
Anyways... I believe you are the one made for me. So it
doesn't matter if you are born again or not, I will marry
you.

DARA
(Smiles)
Better.

NAOMI
I love you.

LIGHT OUT

Scene 5

In the club, there are people drinking and laughing.

The club owner; Olori, enters the club with a book in
her hand and everyone hails her. She ignores them and
calls out for her club manager; Ewatomi.

OLORI
(Screams)
Ewatomi! Ewatomi! Ewatomi!

Ewatomi runs up the stage.

EWATOMI
(Nervous)
Good evening ma. Welcome ma.

OLORI
(Angrily)
What's good about the evening? It has been five months, why
is the book still not balanced?

EWATOMI
(Sighs)
46

It's some of our customers. They still refuse to pay up.

OLORI
Customers? Which one? Who?

EWATOMI
Richard, Baba Ode, Mama Oloyede and Dara.

OLORI
(Angrily)
Dara? How many times do I have to tell you that Dara should
never enter this place again?

EWATOMI
Ma... if we chase him away, we're going to loose customers.
Dara brings a lot of customers to this club. And a lot of
people come here because of him.

OLORI
(Angrily)
He is bringing customers, but he is not paying. That's
still bad market.

EWATOMI
What should we do ma?

OLORI
Dara is to never set foot in this club again!

EWATOMI
Okay ma.

LIGHT OUT

Scene 6

It's a Church setting. Dara, Femi and Joseph are on

stage, arranging the chairs. Pastor Segun walks up on
stage and he is happy to see them arranging the
chairs. They greet each other but Pastor Segun is
interested in talking to Dara.

SEGUN
Bro Dara... How have you been?

DARA
I am fine sir.

SEGUN
That's nice to hear. So, I just wanted to know your
response concerning our last discussion.

DARA
(Confused)
What was our last discussion?
47

SEGUN
About giving your life to Christ. You said you were going
to think about it

DARA
(Scoffs)
Why would I do that.

SEGUN
(Smiles)
Bro Dara... you already do a lot for the Church! You
occasionally attend Bible study and prayer meetings. You
help the sanitation and media unit once in a while. It is
only proper that you join our workforce so you can be fully
recognized as one body with Christ.

DARA
(Chuckles)
Does giving my life to Christ come with having fun or
having money?

SEGUN
(Scoffs)
Bro Dara? Money? God is our reward.

DARA
(Chuckles)
God?

SEGUN
Bro Dara... the Bible says you cannot serve God and Mammon.
Mammon means money. Hope you are not serving Mammon like
this?

DARA
Pastor! I just want to be useful in the Church. Nothing
more, nothing less. I am not interested in giving my life
to Jesus.

SEGUN
(Sighs)
I am only worried about your soul, Bro Dara... John 3:3
says; 'Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be
born again, he cannot see the Kingdom of God.'

DARA
(Sighs)
Okay Pastor! If I give my life to Christ, will you leave me
alone and stop disturbing me?

SEGUN
That's not how it works, Bro Dara!

DARA
I am ready to give my life to your Jesus.
48

SEGUN
(Excited)
Really?

DARA
(Nods)
Yes. So... what's next?

SEGUN
Come with me...

Pastor Segun holds Dara and they move closer to the

Church altar. They knee down and Dara gives his life
to Christ grudgingly.

LIGHT OUT

ACT 5

Scene 1

The three witches are on stage, laughing. They carry a

calabash each and Olori recites incantations.

KUMO
Olori... Dara has given his life to Christ. Aren't we in
trouble?

OLORI
(Laughs)
Dara is just playing jare! He isn't giving his life to
Christ genuinely.

DUDU
Hmm... Olori, what are we going to do next?

OLORI
We have conquered our enemies. It is time to kill, it is
time to steal, it is time to destroy!

DUDU
No more wasting time, Olori! Let us destroy them all!

They all laugh hysterically.

LIGHT OUT

Scene 2

The scene begins as Naomi's voice is heard singing

back stage.

The stage light is on, Noah and Naomi walks up the

stage, coming from a church program.

NAOMI
Today's Church service was boring!

NOAH
(Shocked)
Boring?

NAOMI
There was no life in our service today.

NOAH
What do you mean?

NAOMI
Our Pastors and Deaconess needs to know how to spice things
up so that people would be interested in Church.

NOAH
50

What is going on, Naomi?

NAOMI
What do you mean?

NOAH
When did Church become boring to you?

NAOMI
So I cannot say my mind again abi?

NOAH
I am not saying you shouldn't say your mind. I am just
asking a question.

NAOMI
And I don't have an answer for your question.

NOAH
Okay...
(Sighs)
You that you are even calling Church boring, did you know
that the praise and worship you took was not as
fire-branded as it used to be?

NAOMI
I know. And I have come to understand that it is not every
time that it should be fire branded.

NOAH
Who's telling you that?

NAOMI
Dara told me that.

NOAH
(Shocked)
Dara?
(Sighs)
When last did you read your Bible or pray?

NAOMI
What does that have to do with anything?

NOAH
I am just asking.

NAOMI
It is none of your business.

NOAH
Naomi! Be careful o! 'Let him that thinks he stands take
heed lest he falls.'

NAOMI
(Angrily)
51

I will never fall in Jesus name!

NOAH
I am only saying you should be careful!

NAOMI
I am always careful.

NOAH
Okay o!

Lizzy storms the stage with anger and her protruding

belly. She attacks Naomi from behind with a heavy
punch.

LIZZY
(Angrily)
So you are the idiot that wants to steal my husband? Why?
What have I done to you?

NAOMI
Who are you?

NOAH
Young lady... who are you... stop hurting my sister!

LIZZY
My name is Elizabeth. Lizzy for short and I am Dara's
girlfriend and the mother to his unborn child!

Noah and Naomi are shocked.

NAOMI
(Shocked)
Which Dara is that?

LIZZY
Darasimi Adegoke. My man that you have stolen from me!

NAOMI
What? That can't be true!

LIZZY
Are you calling me a liar? I have evidence that Dara is
mine!

Lizzy shows Naomi picture evidence on her phone. Naomi

falls to the ground in shock.

NOAH
So... Dara got you pregnant?

LIZZY
Yes...
(Sighs)
Tell this girl to leave my man for me or she'll live to
52

regret it!

Lizzy leaves angrily.

NOAH
(Surprised)
Wow... So Dara has another woman... Amazing...

LIGHT OUT

Scene 3

Femi and Mary walk up on stage, after school. Mary

sits on a couch while Femi enters back stage. He
returns with a small bag.

FEMI
This is the bag that my brother keeps his good drugs.

MARY
Wow!

FEMI
I think he even has cocaine!

MARY
Cocaine! I don't want that. I am okay with anything else!

FEMI
Try and spice up your life, Mary! Try something new.

MARY
No, Thank you!

Femi brings out a powder and he begins to sniff. He

gives Mary some pill and she takes them. They get very
high and start laughing. They continue sniffing and
laughing until Femi falls to the ground and begins to
convulse.

LIGHT OUT

Scene 4

Pastor Segun and Dara are walking up the stage,

discussing the Bible. Dara is listening to him,
grudgingly.

SEGUN
Bro Dara, now that you are born again, I need you to know
that you are now for Jesus. And as Apostle Paul said in
Roman 12:1; 'I beseech you therefore brethren, by the
mercies of God, that you present your bodies as a living
sacrifice, holy and acceptable unto God, which is your
reasonable service.'
53

DARA
Okay sir.

SEGUN
Meaning, whatever service you render in Church is
important, but it is not as important as as being a living
sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God.

DARA
Okay sir. I'll try my best to be holy.

SEGUN
You shouldn't try to be holy or to live like Jesus. Let the
Holy Spirit work these things out in you.

DARA
Holy Spirit. Okay.

SEGUN
(Sighs)
Nice talking to you, Bro Dara. But I have to go and meet
with another Church member that needs my counseling.

DARA
Okay Pastor.

SEGUN
God bless you sir.

Segun walks out of stage. Dara hisses at the Pastor.

DARA
(Soliloquizing)
What's the point of giving your life to Christ? I was
thinking this stupid Pastor would stop disturbing me if I
give my life to Christ, but it's like he's getting worse o!
(Hisses)
Let me just go to the Club to calm my nerves.

LIGHT OUT

Scene 5

In a club setting, there are people drinking and

having fun. Olori and Ewatomi walk into the club.
inspecting everything. Olori brings out a book and
Ewatomi becomes nervous.

OLORI
(Angrily)
Ewatomi! This book is still not balanced!

EWATOMI
Ma...?

OLORI
54

Don't act like you don't know what I am talking about.

EWATOMI
Most of our customers are paying now. But only one person
still doesn't pay.

OLORI
Don't tell me it's Dara o!

EWATOMI
It's Dara ma.

OLORI
(Screams angrily)
Dara? You mean that you still allow Dara into my club?

EWATOMI
(Sighs)
Ma... Dara refused to stop coming. He even beat me up one
time that I confronted him.

OLORI
And so...? If he beat you, you beat your own back. Learn to
fight back!

EWATOMI
Ma...?

OLORI
(Yells angrily)
Ewatomi! You have two options. Either I remove this from
your salary or you make Dara to pay up his debt!

EWATOMI
Okay ma.

Olori walks out of the stage angrily, Ewatomi follows

sheepishly.

Dara and Joseph enters and everyone on stage hail

them. They sit and asks for a drink. Ewatomi storms
the stage and attacks Dara.

EWATOMI
(Screaming angrily)
Dara pay me my money o!

DARA
Ewatomi, calm down! What's with the unnecessary
embarrassment?

EWATOMI
Pay your debt o!

DARA
I already told you that I will pay, what's all these drama.
55

EWATOMI
(Screams angrily)
You this stupid boy! It has been five months! You better
give me my money now or else heaven will fall.

DARA
Calm down, Ewatomi! Calm down! I just gave my life to Jesus
so I will pay your money.

EWATOMI
(Laughs)
So... you this imbecile, moron, dullard, poor fool gave
your life to Jesus? Wonder shall never end.

Ewatomi keeps laughing until Dara slaps her. He

continues punching her angrily. Ewatomi falls
unconscious. Everyone on stage tries to wake her up.

Dara's phone rings and he picks it.

DARA
Hello... What's wrong? Femi is in general hospital? Why?
How? Okay... I'm on my way...

Dara runs out of the stage, leaving Joseph. They pour

water on Ewatomi's face and she wakes up, coughing.

ACT 6

Scene 1

Femi is laying on the hospital bed, unconscious.

Andrew, Labake and Mary are standing beside him,
anxious. DOCTOR NONSO enters the room.

LABAKE
(Worried)
Doctor! What's wrong with my son?

DOCTOR NONSO
Good day ma. My name is Doctor Nonso. What's your relation
to the patient?

LABAKE
(Screams)
He's my son! I'm his mother!

DOCTOR NONSO
(Sighs)
Okay... Good...
(Sighs)
Ma... Does your son do drugs?

LABAKE
Drugs? He takes drugs... Paracetamol, Anti-malaria and
Antibiotics when our Doctor prescribes it.

DOCTOR NONSO
That's not what I'm talking about! I mean hard drugs...
Like Cocaine, Tramadol!

LABAKE
(Yells)
God forbid! My own son would never do such thing.

DOCTOR NONSO
(Sighs)
I hate to break it to you ma, but your son overdosed.

LABAKE
Over dosed? What's that?

DOCTOR NONSO
After running a couple of tests, we found cocaine in his
system.

LABAKE
(Shocked)
What? Cocaine? How? When? Where?

DOCTOR NONSO
We're trying all we can but too much of the cocaine has
gone too deep to his system. We'll keep trying our best but
57

we need you to pay some money to the Hospital account.

Labake nods and the Doctor walks out. Labake faces

Mary, weeping.

LABAKE
(Weeping)
Cocaine? How? Who gave my son cocaine?

MARY
(Fearfully)
Ma... I don't know...

LABAKE
(Yells angrily)
You don't know? How is it that you were with my son, in our
house when he overdose on cocaine? How is that a
coincidence?

MARY
I have no idea ma...

Andrew sighs as he interrupts their conversation.

ANDREW
Mummy Femi... If Mary won't talk, I will. Mary and Femi are
into drugs. I have tried to warn them against it, but they
wouldn't listen!

LABAKE
(Shocked)
What? Who initiated him? Is he in a cult?

ANDREW
I have no idea.

MARY
(Sighs)
It is his brother; Dara that gave him the drugs.

LABAKE
(Shocked)
Dara? Did you just say Dara?

Mary nods and shortly after Dara runs inside the ward
weeping and two nurses are behind him. He falls on his
knees as he sees Femi.

DARA
(Screams)
What happened to my brother?

The nurses behind Dara yell at him.

NURSE 1
(Angrily)
58

Mister man, comport yourself. This is an hospital!

DARA
(Whimpers)
Please... tell me my brother is not going to die!

NURSE 2
(Sighs)
We can't make any promises for now. We can only do our
best.

The Nurses walks away. Dara looks at Labake, but she

holds a strong frown at him.

DARA
(Whimpers)
What happened to Femi?

MARY
He overdosed.

DARA
(Shocked)
Overdose? How?

MARY
He took the cocaine in your room.

There's a brief silence on stage as Dara processes the

information.

DARA
(Sniffles)
I can explain...

Labake moves closer to Dara, angrily.

LABAKE
(Tearful)
You better pray that Femi doesn't die. If not... I'd make
sure you pay dearly for this.

Labake, Andrew and Mary walks closer to Femi and say

silent prayers. Dara goes to the opposite side of the
bed and weeps for Femi.

LIGHT OUT

Scene 2

Joseph is at home, drinking garri. Mrs Okoro walks in.

JOSEPH
Mummy... Sugar has finished in this house o!

MRS OKORO
59

(Scoffs)
And so?

JOSEPH
I am only telling you ni o!

Ewatomi and Olori storm the stage with a Police

Officer. Mrs Okoro and Joseph are shocked.

MRS OKORO
What is going on? Who are you people and what do you want?

Joseph begins to stand and step back from them.

OLORI
Don't ask me stupid questions, Madam!

MRS OKORO
Did my son impregnate your daughter?

OLORI
(Hisses)
Impregnate who? It is your son and his friend that did this
to my staff.

MRS OKORO
Did what?

OLORI
(Angrily)
They beat her up like she is a punching bag.

MRS OKORO
(Shocked)
What? Why? How?

JOSEPH
Mummy... I didn't do it o! It was Dara that beat her up.

MRS OKORO
Dara?

JOSEPH
Yes ma.

OLORI
See... I am not here for too much talk... Police officer!
Arrest him!

MRS OKORO
Arrest? For what?

OLORI
For Domestic violence and abuse against a woman!

The Police Officer begins to cuff Joseph.

60

JOSEPH
(Tearful)
Mummy! I am innocent. It is Dara that did it, not me!

MRS OKORO
How many times did I warn you to stop being friends with
Dara? See what it has cost you.

JOSEPH
But... but...

MRS OKORO
I always warned you that Dara would implicate you, but you
never listened. Now this has happened!

The Police Officer carries Joseph away.

LIGHT OUT

Scene 3

Femi is still unconscious on the hospital bed. Labake

is at a corner on the stage praying. Dara is nervous
and weeping.

SEGUN walks in and begins to comforts Labake first

before going to talk to Dara.

SEGUN
(Sighs)
Bro Dara... I heard about everything that happened.

DARA
(Weeping)
Pastor... This is my fault. Femi is going to die because of
me!

SEGUN
It might not look like it, but I need you to believe that
Femi is not going to die.
(Sighs)
I heard Femi swallowed cocaine. Do you even know that your
friend; Joseph is behind bars for beating up Ewatomi?

DARA
(Sighs)
Joseph wasn't the one that beat her up! He's not the one
that has been beating her!

SEGUN
I know... I know it's you that has been beating up the
innocent girl.

DARA
(Surprised)
Who told you, Pastor?
61

SEGUN
The Holy Spirit.

DARA
(Tearful)
Can you tell Jesus or the Holy Spirit to heal my brother? I
don't want to loose Femi.

SEGUN
Jesus can do more than healing your brother. He can save
your soul from damnation.

Dara is silent now. He gives a deep sigh.

DARA
(Whimpers)
Save my soul?

SEGUN
Yes, Jesus loves you! He keeps telling me so. He wants you
to become his own.

DARA
(Weeping)
Pastor! I already gave my life to Jesus... Why are you
bringing this up again?

SEGUN
(Smiles)
Bro Dara... I know you faked giving your life to Christ the
last time. I need you to give your life to Jesus genuinely,
or else you would reap no benefit.

DARA
(Sighs)
Pastor! Please... Tell Jesus that I would give my life to
him. He should just make sure Femi doesn't die. I don't
care what becomes of me again, I just don't want my brother
to die.

Suddenly, Nurses are running up and down. Labake

intensifies her prayers while Dara is nervous. Doctor
Nonso walks up to them, sorrowfully.

LABAKE
(Nervous)
Doctor, how was it? How is Femi?

DOCTOR NONSO
We're sorry! We did all we could, but we lost him.

DARA
(Screams)
No! My brother is not dead! Femi is not dead!

Labake begins to hit and punch Dara!

62

LABAKE
You caused this! Dara you caused this!

Segun pulls Labake from hitting Dara and he consoles

her.

DARA
Mummy... you have to believe me. I didn't mean for any of
this to happen!

Dara runs to Femi's body that has been covered with

clothe. He uncovers his body and hugs him.

DARA
(Weeping)
Femi! Please wake up! You are not dead! Wake up!

Dara burst into tears. Segun pats Dara.

SEGUN
Do you believe that Jesus can raise your brother from the
dead?

DARA
(Sniffles)
I believe.

SEGUN
We have to pray. But first of all, you have to give your
life to Jesus!

DARA
(Shouts)
I give my life to Jesus.

Segun says the salvation declaration and Dara repeats

after him.

SEGUN
Now that you are born again. It means you have received the
Holy Spirit in you. Meaning the power that raised Jesus
Christ from the dead now dwells in your body! So let us
pray!

Segun and Dara hold hands and they begin to pray. They
pray for a while, but nothing happens. Dara gives up
and burst into tears.

Dara is weeping when a Police Officer walks in with

Olori and Ewatomi. Ewatomi sees Dara and she points
her finger at him.

EWATOMI
(Angrily)
That is the man. Arrest him!
63

The Police Officer handles Dara, not minding that he

is in sorrow. He cuffs him and already carrying him
away when Femi suddenly coughs. Everyone in the room
is shocked and taken aback. They stare at Femi as he
sits up and look around the room.

FEMI
What's wrong? What's going on?

Dara doesn't mind that he is being arrested, he jumps

for joy as the Police Officer drag him away.

LIGHT OUT

Scene 4

Folake, Eve, Naomi and Noah are on stage. Naomi is

weeping while Folake is consoling her.

FOLAKE
Naomi my dear... You need to take heart o! God will provide
another better and suitable husband for you. Just wipe your
tears.

NAOMI
(Weeping)
Mummy! How could he do such a thing to me? He got another
woman pregnant! Why? Why?

FOLAKE
Men are scum!

NOAH
(Interrupts angrily)
Which men is scum? Dara might have deceived Naomi, but she
herself was very gullible. Why didn't she pray before
agreeing to marry him? After all the warning I gave her.
How could she intend to marry an unbeliever? Why?

FOLAKE
(Shocked)
Naomi... Unbeliever?

EVE
Ma! The Dara that Naomi wanted to marry was an unbeliever.
Because of Love, she wanted to over look the Bible verse
that says 'Be not unequally yoked with unbelievers, for
what fellowship has light with darkness?' I kept warning
her, even Bro Noah tried his best, but she wouldn't listen!
This her relationship with Dara even affected her prayer
life.

FOLAKE
(Shocked)
What?
64

NOAH
(Angrily)
Mummy! Even you have your own fault! You didn't even care
about who your daughter was marrying. All you are bothered
about is if he has money. That's not good o!

FOLAKE
It's not my fault! I just didn't want my daughter to
suffer!

NOAH
Mummy! I know that as a Parent, you want the best for we
your children. But sometimes, I think it's better to seek
God's face concerning your children and don't just run
after material things for them. All these material things
will fade away one day. The only thing that would not fade
away is the words from the mouth of God.

FOLAKE
I've heard you, Noah.

NAOMI
(Weeping)
I'm sorry Mummy for lying to you. Noah and Eve, I am sorry
for not listening to you.

EVE
Don't apologize to us, apologize to God.

NAOMI
God please have mercy on me. I am sorry.

NOAH
In the journey of life, you have to choose a side. You
can't serve two masters. You're either for God or for the
world. You can't be on the fence. Disobedience to God means
enmity to God and it's a sin. And the wages of sin is
death. Meaning Christians who live in sin are living but
they are dead.

EVE
Naomi... You seriously need to ask God for mercy and grace.
Because with this single act of disobedience, you have let
the devil penetrate your life.

They all begin to pray.

LIGHT OUT

Scene 5

Dara and Joseph are in the cell. Their hands are tied
and they look unkempt and dressed tatteredly. They are
tearful and regretting their actions.

JOSEPH
65

(Tearful and angry)

Dara... Do you know all of these is your fault? If you had
listened to me, we'd not be in this situation!
(No response from Dara)
And my Mum warned me against being your friend. She always
told me that; 'Show me your friend and I'd tell you who you
are.' But this is not who I am...

Dara looks away from Joseph as he burst into tears.

DARA
(Tearful and sorrowful)
God... I am sorry for all I have done. I promise to never
go back to who I used to be. I promise to obey you always
from now on.

JOSEPH
(Hisses)
So you pray now? So you know God now?

DARA
(Sighs)
Joseph... one thing that I have learnt is that God is a
miracle worker. He can save us from this situation we find
ourselves.

JOSEPH
(Chuckles angrily)
Save us? How?

DARA
The God that raised my brother from the dead can do this
one for us.

JOSEPH
(Shocked)
God resurrected your brother?
(Dara nods)
Wow! How did it happen?

DARA
Femi overdosed on cocaine and lost his life. Pastor Segun
was there the day he died and he kept telling me that God
can work his miracles but I didn't listen. When I
eventually concurred, God did it o!

JOSEPH
Wow! In that case, let's pray.

They are about praying when Segun walks up the stage

with a Police Officer.

POLICE OFFICER
Mister man! There is someone here to see you!

Joseph and Dara are glad to see Segun as they get on

66

their feet.

SEGUN
Dara and Joseph... How are you doing?

DARA
(Sighs)
We're not fine sir.

JOSEPH
(Groaning)
Prison is the worst place to be.

SEGUN
That's expected. That's why it's called Correctional
Center.

DARA
(Sighs)
Pastor... Please help us! We can't survive another day in
this place.

SEGUN
Why do you think I am here? Of course I am here to help
you.

JOSEPH
(Joyful)
Wow! Thanks so much Pastor. We are so grateful!

SEGUN
But the both of you need to know that your Mum is very
angry at you. Especially you; Dara! How could you engage
your brother in drug abuse? Why?

DARA
(Sighs)
I meant well... I only wanted to spice up his life up.

SEGUN
(Angrily)
Are you okay? You wanted to spice up his life? Are you
Curry or Thyme?
(Hisses)
You better don't try that nonsense again!

DARA
(Nods)
Okay sir.

SEGUN
I don't need to tell you that your so called wedding is
off.
(Dara exclaims)
Your Fiance found out about your other side chicks;
including the one that is pregnant for you.
67

DARA
(Sorrowful)
Pastor... Where do I start from? The people I love are
turning their backs at me. My family, my fiancee, my
friends... everyone! Where do I start from?

SEGUN
Start with Jesus!
(Dara is silent)
As for you, Joseph. I know you to be a very good boy, until
you became friends with Dara. Even your Mum said she kept
warning you against being friends with him. Evil
communications corrupts good manners.

JOSEPH
I am sorry sir.

SEGUN
Don't apologize to me, go and meet God and apologize.

DARA
Thank you, Pastor Segun. Thank you.

SEGUN
Just thank Jesus! And like Jesus would say; 'Go and sin no
more!' With Jesus, you are either white or black. You can't
be grey!

DARA
From now on, I am completely sold out to Jesus! No more
staying on the fence or hanky-panky.

JOSEPH
No more disobedience, clubbing or doing anything the devil
says.

SEGUN
In one word, you should let the Holy Spirit lead you.
Because, he that walks in the Spirit would not fulfill the
lusts of the flesh!

DARA
Okay sir...

SEGUN
But do you know that we still need to pray? Special prayers
for total restoration of your lost glory.

DARA
Okay sir...

LIGHT OUT

Olori! What is going on? Our prey has escaped before we
were able to completely destroy them.

KUMO
These people must not go scoot free like that. Let's get
them again and kill them this time.

OLORI
Don't worry. We just have to reinforce ourselves as we
attack them again.

They all carry a calabash and recite incantations in

it.

We see Dara, Femi and Labake holding hands and praying

in tongues. Naomi, Noah and Folake are holding hands
and praying in tongues. Joseph, Mrs Okoro and Segun
are holding hands and praying in tongues. Eve, Andrew
and Doctor Nonso are holding hands and praying in
tongues.

[Song plays; 'By the Blood of Jesus by Victoria
