DEFINITION

Hyponymy is a semantic relationship

between a term that belongs to a
set defined by another term, and the
latter. It is a relationship of a
subtype (hyponym).

02 In other words, hyponymy shows the


relationship between a specific
instance of a generic term. A
hyponym is a word or phrase whose
semantic field is more specific than
its hypernym. The semantic field of a
hypernym, also known as a
superordinate, is broader than that
of a hyponym.
THE TYPE
Taxonomic hyponymy: It is also known
as "isa-kind-of" relation. Taxonomic
hyponymy is a hierarchical relationship
between a general term (hypernym)
and a specific term (hyponym) that
belongs to the general term's category.

Functional hyponymy: It is also known


as "part-of" relation. Functional
hyponymy is a relationship between a
general term (hypernym) and a specific
term (hyponym) that is a functional
component of the general term.
