Objective
To build a Balloon Rocket Car that can
extract the most energy from the fluid out
of the inflated balloon and make the
vehicle travel the longest distance.
Introduction:
The balloon powered car is a car that is
powered by a balloon. This Car is very fun
to use and is very easy to build When you
let go of the balloon the stored energy is
converted into kinetic energy as the
balloon flies around ( some energy is also
converted to heat because of friction ). The
laws of conservation of energy say that
energy doesn’t disappear, but changes to
different forms.
Background Information
A balloon-powered car consists of four
main parts:
• The body of the car
• The wheels of the car
• The axles
• The balloon
Principle:
My design is based on the principle of
Aerodynamics. Before the balloon is
inflated, it exerts no force on the relatively
few molecules of air it contains. As it is
inflated, however, more and more air
molecules crowd into it, increasing the
balloon's internal pressure and causing it to
expand. As the rubber of the balloon
stretches, it applies an increasing amount
of force on the air inside. When the balloon
is released, the air escaping from the
balloon pushes against the air just outside
the balloon. The outside air pushes back
on the escaping air, propelling the balloon
car forward. A thrust is produced and
makes the car accelerate.
My car has been designed to move
through the air efficiently. This car’s
smooth, aerodynamic shape allows air to
flow over it easily with very little drag. In
order to go faster, a car should have less
drag. The streamlined body overcomes
drag.
Procedure:
1)Cut the ends of 2 popsicle sticks
2)Cut a small popsicle piece
3)Hot glue the 2 popsicle sticks together at
the top
4)Now glue on the small piece of popsicle
stick
5)Now hot glue a second small piece of
popsicle stick to the centre of the 2 big
popsicle sticks
6)Take a straw and cut it in half
7)Stick the 2 straws in front of the small
pieces of wood
8)Take 4 same size bottle caps and drill a
home in the middle of each
9)Tape the outside of the caps for extra
traction
10)Take a wooden skewer and slide one of
the wheels on for the front and back
11)Slide the 2 skewers with the wheels on
into the straws
12)Then cut of part of the skewers
13)Slide on the other 2 wheels
14)Hot glue the wheels to the skewer so
they don’t fall off
15)
