Summary
Produce and Consume tags between 5580 and older RSLogix 5000 based controllers

Question
Can I perform produced and consumed tags between a 5580 ControlLogix controller
(1756-L83E or 1756-L85E) and older controllers?
Is there an add on profile (AOP) available that can be used to add in a 5580
ControlLogix controller (1756-L83E or 1756-L85E) to the I/O tree in an older revision?
How do I select a 5580 controller in an older revision of RSLogix 5000/Studio 5000
when it is not available as a selection?

Answer
Produced and Consumed tags between a 5580 ControlLogix controller (1756-L8xE) and older model controllers
(1756-L5x/L6x to 1756-L7x) work as expected.

There is no AOP available that can be used to add in a 5580 ControlLogix controller so that it can be selected in
an older revision of software.

In order to represent an L8xE controller in an older revision of RSLogix 5000 (pre-v.20):

1. Right click on the Ethernet module that will be used with the older platform
2. Left click on New Module
3. Select a 1756-ENBT/EN2T Ethernet Communications Module

4. Select the highest Major Revision and OK

5. Enter a valid Name
6. Select the Comm Format (or Rack Connection) to None
7. Enter the Slot number as 1
8. Select the appropriate Chassis Size
9. Select Disable Keying for the Electronic Keying
10. Enter the IP Address of the L8xE controller
11. Select OK
12. Right click on the 1756 Backplane underneath the Ethernet module that was just
created
13. Left click on New Module
14. Select the latest, largest available ControlLogix Controller
15. Select OK
16. Enter a valid Name
17. Select Slot 0
18. Select OK

The above method was tested and worked using both a 1756-L55 and a 1756-L63 controller with firmware
revision 16 and a 1756-EN2T. This has also been tested with a 1756-ENBT and a 1756-L63 at revision 13. To run the
setup explained above, it is important that the 5580 controller is placed in Slot 0 in the remote chassis of the
consuming controller as shown below.

This setup will work for the 5580 controller being place in any slot of the remote chassis in version 19. Due to
Electronic Keying being disabled and Connection being set to none for the imaginary Ethernet Card, the
Ethernet Card could be placed in any slot and even in slots being in use. In the example above the
imaginary 1756-EN3TR could be used in Slot 5 and the Analog Output could remain in the physical chassis. The
only forbidden slot for the 1756-EN3TR would be the Slot of the 5580 Controller. Please find below a short
summary for the Logix Designer version 19 configuration to consume data via the embedded port of a 5580
controller:

1. Place a 1756-L75 in the slot of the 5580 controller

2. Place an Ethernet Card like a 1756-EN3TR or 1756-EN2T in any other slot of the
remote chassis with Electronic Keying being disabled and Connection being set to
none.

For any Logix 5000 project in v.20 to v.27, the 1756-L8xE controller can be added as a 5370 CompactLogix
controller with embedded Ethernet (1769-L30ER, 1769-L33ER, 1769-L36ER). As long as the CompactLogix in the
project matches the IP address of the 1756-L8xE controller physically on the network, the produced and

consumed tag connection will work.

If attempting to produce and consume tags between a PowerFlex 700S DriveLogix 5730 Controller it has been
shown to work with the DriveLogix 5730 Controller at revision 15 and a 1756-L83E at revision 30 but the 700S
DriveLogix 5730 EtherNet Bridge Embedded EtherNet/IP Option card for the DriveLogix 5730 Controller had to
be flashed from revision 2.014 to 3.014 in order for it to work.
