Part 2: Reading Comprehension (20 questions in total, 2

points each; full score 40 points)

choose the best option from the four options A, B, C and D

given in each question .

A
In some countries with very little rain, the farmers have

to water the plants in their fields. To do that is easy if

there is a great river near the crops. Canals carry the

river water to the fields during the dry seasons.

Sometimes, there is too much water in the river and a flood

takes place. Sometimes when it is dry, there is no enough

water in the river for the crops.

In order to help the farmers, a dam should be built across

the river. This will store water for dry seasons, and in

wet seasons it will prevent floods.

A great lake will appear behind the dam. Then the country

may have enough water. More crops will be grown, and there

will be more food for everyone. Besides there will be no

more floods.

In China a great dam has been designed and the project is

being carried out. The designed dam is being built across

the Yangtze River. This will of course bring happiness to

the people on both banks and across China as a whole.

thing ____.

A. water also has two sides

B. water is everywhere

C. water is needed by men

D. water will become less and less

Until men invented ways of staying underwater for more than

a few minutes, the wonders of the world below the sea were

almost unknown. And to make full use of the rich natural

resources (resources) underwater was quite impossible. How

could air be supplied to divers below the

surface(surface) of the sea? There were pictures in the

past showing men swimming under the surface with air bags

tied to their bodies. A pipe from the bag carried air into

the swimmer's mouth. But little progress was made in the

invention of diving devices until 1490, when the famous

Italian painter Leonardo da Vinci designed a complete

diving suit.

In 1819 a German, called Siebe developed a way of forcing

air into the headcovering by a machine operated above the

water. Finally, in 1837 he invented the “hard-hat suit”

which was used for almost a century. It had a metal

covering for the head and an air pipe attached (connected)

to a machine above the water. It also had small openings

to remove unwanted air. But there were two dangers to the

hardhat suit. One was a sudden rise to the surface,

caused by too great a supply of air. The other was the

crushing( squeezing ) of the body, caused by a sudden dive

into deep water.

40. The passage is mainly about _______.

A. how to invent diving devices

B. how to develop a way of diving

C. how to design a diving suit

D. the development of diving devices

water.

A. Power. B. Time. C. Air. D. Height.

Dogs enjoy the right kind of training. While they are being

taught or performing, they are getting attention from you,

which all dogs love. A dog that will come when it is

called, walk quietly by your side, and sit and lie down

when it is told is much more fun to its own. A dog that you

have trained yourself will also feel closer to you than one

that is allowed to do whatever it wants. Lessons should be

kept short and held often. You will need to be patient and

show your dog what to do. Only try to teach one thing at a

time. Try also to end each lesson with something your dog

does well so that you can give it a lot of praise.

The first thing your dog should learn is its name. Call

your dog often and reward (reward) it with praise, some

food, or a game. Always make it pleasant for the dog to

come to you. If you want to scold the animal, go up to it

so that it doesn't think it is being scolded for coming to

you. Dogs have to become used to a collar and leash, but

encouragement will soon teach them to enjoy walking with

you.
