Life of Rizal
JUNE 19, 1861 He was born, Wednesday
evening in Calamba. It was a
BIRTH Wednesday evening in
Calamba, Laguna, and his
mother nearly died in the
process.

He was baptized by the

His sister Concepcion died
at the age of three. He shed
real tears for the first time.
CONCEPCION'S DEATH

1865 TO 1867 mother taught him how to read and


write. As he grew older, his parents
INFORMAL EDUCATION BY HIS employed private tutors to give him
MOTHER AND PRIVATE TUTORS lessons at home. The first was
Maestro Celestino & the second,
Maestro Lucas Padua. Leon Monroy,
father's classmate, taught Rizal
rudiments of Latin. Uncle Manuel
Alberto, concerned with his physical
development; taught love for the
open air & developed in him great
admiration for nature's beauty, while
Uncle Gregorio, a scholar, instilled
into the mind of the boy love for
education.

He made a pilgrimage to JUNE 6, 1868

1869 At the age of eight, Rizal
wrote his first poem
entitled "Sa Aking Mga
FIRST POEM- Kabata." The poem was
"SA AKING MGA KABATA" written in tagalog and had
for its theme "Love of One’s
Language."

Rizal had his early


education in Calamba and

Biñan. It was a typical EARLY/FORMAL
schooling that a son of an
EDUCATION IN BIÑAN
ilustrado family received
during his time,
characterized by the four
R’s-reading, writing,
arithmetic, and religion.
Instruction was rigid and
strict. Knowledge was
forced into the minds of the
pupils by means of the
tedious memory method
aided by the teacher’s whip.

1869
One Sunday afternoon in June 1869,
Jose, after kissing the hands of his
parents and a tearful parting from
LEFT CALAMBA FOR his sister, left Calamba for Biñan. He

acted as his second father.

The school was in the house of the


teacher, which was a small nipa hut 1870
about 30 meters from the home of

name was Justiniano Aquino Cruz.

1872 TO 1873
FIRST YEAR IN ATENEO

He and his brother went to Manila to


enrol and take he entrance exam at

San Juan de Letran, but when he went TOOK EXAM IN SAN JUAN DE
back to Calamba he found out that his
father’s wish changed, instead of San LETRAN COLLEGE
Juan de Letran, he wished to enrol him
at Ateneo de Manila.

Rizal took up medicine,
enrolling simultaneously in
preparatory medical course

He(19 years old) won the


first prize in a literary
contest in Manila with his

masterpiece (essay): el EL CONSEHO DELOS DIOSES
Conseho delos Dioses (The
WON FIRST PRIZE
Council of Gods).

1882 Rizal joined Circulo Hispano-Filipino


and he wrote “Mi Piden Versos” (They
ask me for Verses) as requested by
JOINED CIRCULO HISPANO-
the members of the society.

He left Calamba by
carromata, reaching Manial
MAY 1, 1882
after 10 hours of travel
LEFT CALAMBA FOR MANILA

MAY 3, 1882 Rizal left Manila to complete his


university study in Spain, improve his
LEFT MANILA FOR SPAIN knowledge in language and the arts.
He departed for Singapore, on board
the Spanish steamer, Salvadora.

ARRIVED AT BARCELONA, SPAIN

ENROLLED MEDICINE AT THE
UNIVERSIDAD CENTRAL DE
MADRID

1884 TO 1885 He studied and passed all subjects leading


to the degree of Doctor of Medicine. He
did not present the thesis required for
COMPLETED DEGREE IN DOCTOR graduation nor paid the fees, so he was
OF MEDICINE not awarded his Doctor’s diploma

Rizal completed his medical course in


Spain. He was awarded the degree of JUN 21, 1884

RShortly after terminating his study
in Universidad Central de Madrid,
Rizal(24 years old and already a
WENT TO PARIS TO STUDY physician), decided to go to Paris in

ophthalmology

There he became a member of the


Chess PLayer’s Club and worked at
the University of Heidelberg Eye

Hospital under the direction of Dr. RIZAL WENT TO GERMANY
Otto Becker.

The blooming flowers along the cool

APR 22, 1886 banks of the Neckar River fascinated


rizal. Among them was his favourite
flower-the light blue forget-me-not.
WROTE "A LAS FLORES DE HEIDELBERG" The beautiful spring flowers reminded
" him of the blooming flowers at the
garden of his home in Calamba. He then
wrote “A Las Flores de Heidelberg”

His novel-Noli Me Tangere was


finished and ready for printing.
FEB 21, 1887
Maximo Viola, his friend from San
NOLI ME TANGERE WAS FINISHED
Miguel, Bulacan agreed to finance the
printing cost.

OCT 1, 1887 Rizal begun writing his second novel


while practicing medicine in Calamba
THE SECOND NOVEL
FEB 1, 1889
Rizal’s pamphlet The Vision of
Fr. Rodriguez written under
the pen name “Dimasalang”
PAMPHLET- "THE VISION OF FR. was published in Barcelona to
RODRIGUEZ" answer the friars’ attack on
Noli Me Tangere.

Rizal’s essay, “The Philippines, a SEP 30, 1889 TO JAN 31,

Century Hence” was published in La
Solidaridad in four series.

NOV 15, 1890 Rizal became a master of Masons in


Lodge Solidaridad

Jose Rizal organized the civic
organization, LA LIGA FILIPINA at the
house of Dorotheo Ongjunco in which
LA LIGA FILIPINA one of the atendees was Andres
Bonifacio, the founding father of the
Katipunan.

Rizal’s exile in Dapitan, Zamboanga


was one of the most lonesome and
sorrowful periods of his life. He

missed the company of his friends EXILE IN DAPITAN
and family, and the death of Leonor
Rivera

DEC 26, 1896 Rizal was tried before the military


court under the supervision of Judge
