CHAPTER 1- Advent of a National Hero

LIFE
He was born in moonlit night of Wednesday, June 19, 1861 in the Lakeshore town of Calamba, Laguna, Philippines. He was baptized on June 22 by the parish priest, Father Rufino Collantes.

Jose is derived from the Christian saint, San Jose (St. Joseph) Rizal was the 7 of the eleven children of Francisco Rizal Mercado and Teodora Alonso Mercado. Rizal was a product of the mixture of races Negrito, Indonesian, Malay, Chinese, Japanese and Spanish.

His family belonged to the principalia. It was one of the distinguished families in Calamba. Rizal family had a simple, contented, and a happy life. Family ties among Rizals were intimately close. Everyday they heard mass in the town church. They prayed together daily at home. After the family prayers, all the children kissed the hands of their parents.

LIFE Jose Rizal had many beautiful memories of childhood in his native town. He grew up in a happy home, ruled by good parents, bubbling with joy, and sanctified by Gods blessing. The happiest period of Rizals life was spent in the Lakeshore town, a worthy prelude to his Hamlet-like tragic manhood. He was a frail, sickly and undersized child. Thats why he was given the tenderest care by this parents. The imaginary tales told by the aya aroused in Rizal an enduring interest in legends and folklore. Concha died of sickness in 1865 and it brought him his first sorrow. Since early manhood Rizal had been interested in magic. He do puppet shows, and he entertained his town folks with magic-lantern exhibitions.

WORKS At the age of five, he began to make sketches with his pencil and to mould in clay and wax objects which attracted his fancy. At the age of 8, he wrote his first poem in the native language. He also wrote his first dramatic work which was a Tagalog comedy.

LIFE Rizal had his early education in Calamba and Binan. His first teacher was his mother. Because of his love for painting, he spent many leisure hours at the old painters house named Juancho. The painter was impressed thats why he gave him lessons in drawing and painting. His first school brawl was when he fought the bully in their school. Fortunately, he defeated the bigger boy. He left Binan on Saturday afternoon, December 17, 1870. Gom-Bur-Za was executed at sunrise, February 17, 1872 by order of Governor General Izquierdo. Before June 1872, tragedy struck the Rizal family because Dona Teodora was suddenly arrested on a malicious charge that she and her brother, Jose Alberto, tried to poison the latters perfidious wife.

WORKS June 1869, he left Calamba for Binan. When the teacher was having his siesta, he challenged the bully named Pedro to a fight.

LIFE June 10, 1872- he took entrance examinations at the College of San Juan de Letran, and he passed them. His father who first wished him to study at Letran, changed his mind and decided to send him to Ateneo instead. Rizal is the first to his family to adopt the surname Rizal. He boarded in a house on Caraballo street owned by a spinster named Titay. June1872, first day of class. His professor was Father Jose Bech. He took private lessons (Spanish) at Sta. Isabel College at noon recesses. He became an emperor at the end of the month. At the end of school year in March 1873, he returned to Calamba for summer vacation. When he returned to Manila, he boarded inside Intramuros at No. 6 Magallanes St. His landlady was an old widow

WORKS He carved an image of The Virgin Mary. He wrote the requested religious drama in poetic verses at his home and finished it on June 2, 1876.

Which he presented it, Father Lleonart was highly pleased and profusely thank the teenage sculptor. He helped Julio Meliza from Iloilo to retrieve the kite. He courageously climb the high cathedral tower. After his graduation from Ateneo, who was then 16 years old when he experienced his first romance. It was Segunda Katigbak. When Rizal arrived in his hometown, his mother did not recognize him at first, due to her failing eyesight.

LIFE His mother didnt want him to study more. April 1877, Rizal, 16years old, matriculated in the University of Santo Tomas taking up Philosophy and Letters. 1877-1878, first term in the UST, he studied Cosmology, Metaphysics, Theodicy, History of Philosophy 1878-1879, he took up medicine because he wanted to be a physician so that he may cure his mothers failing eyesight. During his term in UST, he also studied in Ateneo, he took Perito Agrimensor ( Expert Surveying) He was unhappy of this Dominican Institution of high learning because they were hostile to him, the Filipinos were rationally discriminated and method of instruction was obsolete and repressive.
