INTRODUCTION
Location:
Marrakech is located in the western part of Morocco, in North Africa. It is
situated at the foothills of the Atlas Mountains.
Area:
The city of Marrakech covers an area of approximately 230 square
kilometers (89 square miles).
Demography:
Marrakech had a population of around 1.1 million people.
Government:
Marrakech is part of Morocco and is governed within the framework of
Morocco's constitutional monarchy. The city has a local government
structure with a mayor and city council responsible for local
administration.

FUNCTIONAL CHARACTER
Marrakech is often referred to as the "Red City" due to the color of its historic buildings and walls. It is a major
cultural and tourist hub in Morocco. The city's functional character is multifaceted:
1. Tourism: Marrakech is a top tourist destination, known for its historic medina (old city), palaces, gardens, and
vibrant souks (markets). Visitors come to experience its rich history, architecture, and cultural heritage.
2. Trade and Commerce: The city has a bustling marketplace where artisans sell traditional crafts, textiles, and
spices. It has also become a center for modern commerce, with various businesses catering to tourists and locals.
3. Culture and Arts: Marrakech is known for its vibrant arts scene, including music, dance, and traditional
Moroccan cuisine. It hosts various festivals and cultural events throughout the year.
4. Historic Sites: Marrakech is home to iconic historic sites like the Koutoubia Mosque, Saadian Tombs, and the
Bahia Palace, showcasing its historical significance.
5. Education and Research: The city has universities and institutions focused on education and research.

EVOLUTION
1. Foundation (11th Century):
- Marrakech was founded by the Almoravid dynasty in 1062, establishing it as the capital of their empire.
