CVM | SMAID | ARCHITECTURE | STUDIO BRIEF

SEMESTER : III
COURSE TITLE: Architecture Design Studio - III
STUDIO TITLE: Material Studio
Studio Co-ordinators : Ar. Monika Patel | Ar. Dhruvil Mistry

—--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

AIM:

● Studio is aimed at investigating material, assembly techniques and their contribution to

architecture.
● To approach design from a material point of view and understand whole to part
relationships in architecture.

OBJECTIVES:

● Exposure to materials available for construction and their uses

● Develop an awareness of the capabilities and limitations of a materials / material
processes and its tangible implications on design.
● Develop structural and material intuition and understand its contribution to form-finding.
● Learn ways of developing junctions for systems capable of spanning and sheltering.
● Understanding how a language is developed through detailing

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

● An understanding of whole to part relationship in architecture

● A Hands-on approach while designing
● Understanding the synergy - Thinking while Making
● An eye for detailing.
● An intuitive understanding of Structures.
● Confidence to tackle practical issues and design challenges simultaneously
● Confidence to engage / experiment / innovate with material and structure while
conceiving architecture.
● Bringing out Scientific / Artistic / Structural Expression in one's work
● An introduction to Tectonics in architecture
● Ability to uncover design potential in material and technique

EXERCISE: 1

Following the ongoing exercise, students will identify the appropriate material, and design the
shelter for the respective users.

EXERCISE: 2

Students will identify the places on ADIT campus, and understand the requirements and
potential of that place. Considering the same they will design a shelter.

ASSIGNMENT | 1 : BRIEF

Method:
Generate a brief through short-notes or sketches to respond the following matters:
1. Context :
● Landform
● Climate
● Flora-Fauna
2. Users
3. Material
● Justify the appropriateness of particular material with respect to context
● Identify the particular property of material.

Outcome of exercise:
● A2 size spread filled with infographics that capture an individual's
comprehension of the exercise or time problem

ASSIGNMENT | 2 : CASE STUDY

Method:
● Select a case study and highlighting the reason for individual choice
● Identify an detail of interest that individual would like to study/explore
● Study structural behavior using scaled study models. The materials
chosen must behave similar to the actual and must be appropriately
detailed to emphasize / exaggerate behavior.
● Make diagrams that clarify understanding of how the structure behaves
under loading and how the junctional details allow this behavior (Load
analysis & Deflection diagram).

Outcome of exercise:
● Diagrams Analysis & Assembly
● Models and Prototypes (exploration of details)
● Behavioral study models

ASSIGNMENT | 3 : “Designing an envelope”

Method:
Design an envelope, taking into account the user's aspirations and experiences within a
specific context, in order to establish a connection between architectural design and its
structural and material attributes. This should be done while considering the following
criteria:"

A. Context:
● Understand the context thoroughly and find the factors which governs the
design process

B. User:
● Understand the user’s physical and psychological requirements.

C. Zone | hierarchy:
● Generate the program through the user’s activity, and understand the
spacial and volumetric requirements of particular activity;
● Organize and orient them, considering the hierarchy and context.

D. Material:

● Develop an awareness of the capabilities and limitations of a materials /

material processes and its tangible implications on design.
● Develop structural and material intuition and understand its contribution to
form-finding.
● Learn ways of developing junctions for systems capable of spanning and
sheltering.
● Understand how a language is developed through detailing

Outcome of exercise:

● Drawings & Specifications

(Wall Sections, Details, Exploded views, Plan, Elevation, Section)
● 3D Visualizations
● Study model of proposal in apporpriet scale
● A sketchbook that compiles the design dialogue and thought process
