Can you imagine a world without words? The main way that we communicate
with each other is by using words. We can communicate either by speaking and
listening or by writing and reading. With words, we can give and receive information,
ideas, orders and instructions.
People have used writing to communicate for about 7000 years. At first, they
used to draw simple pictures to represent objects, such as people and animals. Then
people started to put pictures together to represent something more difficult, like a
sentence. The next step in the development of writing was to use symbols or signs.
These symbols represented the sounds of words and not their meaning.
Finally, the alphabet from which modern English comes, was invented in about
1500 BC. The people who invented the alphabet used a set of symbols to represent the
sound of language, these symbols are still used to the same sound today. Many
languages are written with letters of an alphabet, including Vietnamese.

TEST 001 5
and children to learn to cook a few simple meals while you are away. They will be
much happier and probably they will enjoy the experience. If you eat alone a great
deal, choose good restaurants. In the end, they will be much better for your digestion.
You may also find it useful to call the restaurant in advance and state that you will be
eating alone. You will probably get better service and almost certainly a better table.
Finally, and most importantly, anticipate your travel needs as a businesswoman; this
starts with light weight luggage. Take a folding case inside your suitcase; it will come
in extremely handy for dirty clothes, as well as for business documents and papers you
no longer need on the trip. And make sure you have a briefcase so that you can keep
currently required papers separate.
Obviously, experience helps, but you can make things easier on yourself for the
first by careful planning so that right from the start you can really have a good trip.

very different ways.
June is 36 and a mother of two. She went to evening classes.
“I gave up working when I had my first child, but a year ago I joined a French evening class.
At first, it was quite difficult. We had to speak French all the time in the classroom and I
didn’t understand anything. Also, when you only have one lesson a week, you have to do a
lot at home. I studied when the children were in bed and I listened to French tapes in the car.
At the end of the year I could speak French very well.”
Tim is 23. He went to Italy to learn Italian.
“When I finished university, I wanted to travel and learn a language. I already knew a bit of
Italian, so I decided to go there. I didn’t want to do formal lessons, so I bought some tapes
and listened to them before I went. I travelled around the country for six months. It’s the
only way to learn! I didn’t have much money, so I worked in bars. That meant I met a lot of
people and learned a lot of Italian. I also had a great time. I’d definitely recommend it.”
Sasha is 29. She did an intensive course in London.
“I studied French and Spanish at university and got a job with computers. I missed learning
a language, so I asked my boss for a month’s holiday and enrolled on an intensive German
course in London. We did six hours of lessons every day, so it was quite hard work. We all
communicated in German. The problem was when I went home, I spoke English again. The

Questions 37-40 refer to the following article.
Do you want to be on TV or in a film? Well, if you do, then why not become an extra? Extras
play a very small part in a film or TV program. They don’t usually speak. However, they may
have to walk across the set or stand with other extras as part of a crowd.
There are many agencies that are always looking for extras and some of them are online, so it’s
easy to apply wherever you live. You usually just need to fill in an application form and send in
some photos. TV and film directors often want extras who have a particular look. For example,
they may want women with long hair for period dramas and people who look a bit scary for
horror films, so try to think about the kind of program that you’d like to be in when you’re
choosing which photos to send.
So imagine you get a call to say a director wants you in their next film. You’re really excited,
TEST 001 8
but what happens next? Well, don’t be anxious about how you’ll look on screen, as the
company will do lots of work on you when you arrive on the set. You might have to wear your
own clothes, but don’t worry about your hair and make-up as there will be staff to make you
look perfect for the role.
Now, although it all sounds really exciting, be prepared to sit around for a lot of the day,
waiting until you are needed for your scene. The time can go very slowly if you don’t have
anything to do, so it’s a good idea to take a book with you on any job that you get. Take some
food and drink, too – you’ll probably get lunch, but remember it’ll be a long day!
Most extras can earn about £90 to £110 a day. This isn’t very good for the number of hours that
you need to be available, but for the actual work that you do, it’s OK. However, people usually
become an extra for the chance to be on the big screen rather than for the money. Some people
hope that it may lead to a real acting part. This doesn’t happen very often, but there are some
stories of extras becoming famous because a director saw them on a film set. However, even if
you continue to just be an extra, you might get to see one of your favorite Hollywood actors one
day, and it will definitely be something to tell all your friends about!
37. What is the best title for the article?
A. What to expect as a film and TV extra B. My life as a film and TV extra
C. From TV extra to film star D. How to get a job as a film or TV extra
38. The writer suggests that you will get an ‘extra’ job if ________.
A. you have the right clothes B. you are in the right place
C. your appearance is right D. you live near the film site
39. The writer says that if you get a part, you may need to ________.
A. do something with your hair B. find something to wear
C. practice doing your make-up D. know some Photoshop tips
40. What does the writer think is a benefit of being an extra?
A. You can have lots of free time. B. You will get noticed by the film director.
C. You might get jobs for your friends. D. You can meet famous actors.
