Compound Versus Phrases

Compound Verb
A compound verb is a verb made up of multiple
words. In the English language, compound verbs
create a new word greater than the meanings
of the original words.
Type
Verb-Verb (VV) : stir-fry, freeze-dry
Noun-Verb (NV) : hand-wash, air-condition,
steam-clean
Adjective-Verb (AV) : dry-clean, whitewash
Preposition-Verb (PV) : underestimate,
outrun, overcook
Compound Adjective
Compound Adjective is formed when two or more adjective are join
together to modify the same noun.
Noun-Adjective (NA) : sky-high, coal-black, oil rich
Adjective-Adjective (AA) : grey-green, squeaky-clean
Preposition-Adjective (PA) : underfull, overactive

Note :
1. Compound adjective should be hyphenated to avoid confusion of
ambiguity
2. If the word are clear, we could not use the hyphen
Example :
Terribly hot : it was terribly hot day
Amazing good : it is amazing good idea
Compound Noun
Compound Noun are words for people, animal, place, thing, or idea
made up of two or more words.
Verb-Noun (VN) : sweatword, drophammer, playtime
Noun-Noun (NN) : hairnet, mosquito net, butterfly
Adjective-Noun (AN) : blackboard, greenstone, faintheart
Preposition-Noun (PN) : in-group, outpost, overcoat
Character/types of compound nouns :
1. Solid compound (based on one word). Example : toothpaste, haircut,
bedroom
2. Use hypen. Example : dry-cleaning, daughter-in-law, well-being
3. Separate words. Example : swimming pool, full moon
Headed and Headless
Compounds
Headed compounds are compounds which have an
internal centre (it is called endocentric), for examples
like blackboard, greenstone, etc. But headless
compounds are compounds which do not have an
internal centre (it is called exocentric), for examples:
faintheart (is not a kind of heart but a kind of person
who has a faint heart), pickpocket (is not a kind of
pocket)

Compounds Containing Bound
Combining Forms
The vocabulary of English, especially in scientific and
technical areas, includes a huge repertoire of compounds
that are made up of bound roots, known as combining
forms. Here are just a few:

electrocardiogram, retrograde, retrospect, plantigrade

For most of these, the meaning of the whole is clearly


determinable from that of the parts: for example :
Anthrop(o)- ‘human’ plus -(o)logy ‘science or study’ yields a
word that means ‘science or study of human beings’
