While people in developing countries are happier than in the past, people in developed

countries are less happy. Why? What can be learnt from this?
Residents of third-world countries nowadays are happier than those living in richer ones,
which can be attributed to materialism. There is indeed a lesson to be learnt from this: neither
money nor possessions equate to long-term happiness.

People in developing countries are now having better living standards; nonetheless, they
struggled to meet basic human needs such as education and food decades ago. This can be
observed clearly in Southeast Asian nations where wars condemned people to serious
repercussions, causing unlimited difficulties in their lives. Thanks to tremendous economic
progress in these places, it relieves them of the constant stress of making ends meet and
significantly boosts their happiness levels.

Conversely, people in developed countries, especially in Europe, already have such living
standards—even better—for a long time. Some of these people hence seemingly assume this
privilege as a given, leaving them unfulfilled. To find fulfillment, they tend to be nudged by
rampant consumerism, buying elaborate costumes or expensive jewelry. They however might
not realize that material possession is psychologically not long-term satisfaction. This mindset
therefore gradually undermines not only their contentment but also their economic situation,
leading to sadness or depression due to potential financial problems.

A lesson yielded from this trend for both groups of countries’ inhabitants is material
prosperity is not equivalent to sustainable happiness. As soon as being able to subsist on their
lives almost effortlessly, they should not take it for granted and find other healthier sources of
happiness such as playing sports or establishing strong rapport between friends and family. If
anything, those inhabiting less well-off countries would experience the same situation that
people in richer nations do.

In conclusion, while citizens’ lives in developing countries improve greatly, consumerist

mentality and ingratitude may contribute to the decreasing level of happiness of people in
developed nations and should be stamped out.
