Indonesian education figure :

RADEN OTO ISKANDAR DINATA

Raden Otto Iskandar Dinata is one of Indonesia's national heroes who was born
in Bojongsoang, West Bandung, on December 31 1897. Otto is the youngest child of
Raden Haji Adam Rahmat and Siti Hidayah. Died on December 20, 1945 (aged 48) in
Mauk, Tangerang, Banten, Indonesia. He died because he was killed by black soldiers
and his body was never found.

• Educational background
Otto took his basic education at Hollandsch-Inlandsche School (HIS) Bandung,
then continued his education at Kweekschool Onderbouw (First Part Teacher School)
Bandung, and at Hogere Kweekschool (Upper Teacher School) in Purworejo, Central
Java. After completion, Otto became an HIS teacher in Banjarnegara, Central Java.
Oto is also active in a Sundanese cultural organization called Paguyuban
Pasundan. He became Secretary of the General Management in 1928, and was its
chairman for the period 1929-1942. This organization operates in the fields of
education, socio-culture, politics, economics, youth and women's empowerment.
Raden otto iskandardinata received the nickname the Starling of Hope. R. Otto
Iskandar Dinata is also nicknamed the figure of Indonesian education. In 1928 R. Otto
Iskandar Dinata founded Kartini schools and middle and high schools. According to
Otto Iskandar, through education Indonesian people can be educated to become
knowledgeable and responsible people towards the nation.
Korean education figure :

AHN CHANG HO

Ahn Chang Ho or Dosan was born in Gangseo, Pyeongan Province on November


9, 1878. At that time it was the end of the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910) when Korea was
experiencing a period of chaos. Ahn Chang-ho was born as the third child of Ahn Kyo-
jin (father) and Hwang (mother). Dosan is a descendant of the Sun-heung Ahn(순順興
安氏) Clan.

• Educational background
When the First Sino-Japanese War (1894-1895) broke out, Ahn, who was still a
student at that time, began to realize the need to introduce a new culture and civilization
to his country and increase Korea's status and power as an independent country. When
Japan won the war and began to set its sights on Korea, in 1894 Ahn went to Seoul to
study. In 1895 he attended Gusae Hakdang, a missionary-sponsored educational
institution founded by Horace G Underwood and converted to Christianity. When Ahn
was still a student at Gausae he worked for Dr. Oliver R. Avison at Jejungwon, Korea's
first medical institute which became Severance Hospital and is now part of Yonsei
University Medical Center.
In1897, he joined the Independence Association, a socio-political institution that
focused on the importance of independence and not depending on foreign influence. He
also started his career as an independence activist and teacher at the same time. At the
age of 22, he founded Korea's first private elementary school. Ahn Chang Ho died on
March 10, 1938 due to illnessi.
