1. Oil should preferably be added to the gear via the suction filter. After filling, the
filter element should be removed and cleaned before the filter cover is re-fitted.

IMPORTANT!
Ensure that the sealing in the cover (o-ring, and an akulon washer under the screw
head) are fitted correctly and that they seal the cover completely.
This can be controlled with the pump running by putting some oil around the screw
head and the gap between the filter cover and the filter housing.

2. Oil should be added until the level reaches the maximum mark on the dip-stick.
After the start-up with empty oil system, the level must be re-checked and extra oil
added if necessary.

When checking the oil level during service, the clutch must be disengaged to
obtain the correct reading of the oil level.
The oil level must at all times be between the minimum and maximum mark on the
dip-stick.

- Too low oil level can cause the pump to suck air.
- Too high oil level can cause increased heating of the oil and of the gear itself.

Hydraulic mechanisms are precision units, and their continuous smooth operation
depends on proper care. Therefore follow the instructions given below.

Every day.

1. Check the oil level on the gear box by means of the dip stick. Replenish if
necessary.
2. Check the oil level in the gravity tank.
3. Make a visual check on the complete equipment for oil leaks that may have
developed.

Inspecting during service.

1. The minimum servo oil pressure should be as indicated in "Data Sheet" at full
engine RPM. If the pressure drops too low, the clutch will slip.
2. Check that the oil temperature of the gearbox is as indicated in "Data Sheet".
3. Check the water flow through the cooler now and again.
4. Pressure filter is equipped with alarm for clogged oil filter. For duplex filter, change
immediately over to the other section when you get clogged filter alarm. Clogged oil
filter elements are to be replaced by new ones a.s.a.p. for both single filters and
duplex filters. If there are any irregular wears in the gearbox, always check the
suction and pressure filters for impurities. If any doubts take oil samples for analysis.

3. Day after extensive overhauls or dismantling.

1.Check oil filters(X) for the pumps. Clean filters in gas oil and blow off with
air blast if necessary.

Every month.

1. For suction filter(X). Unscrew the screw in top cover and open the filter. Clean the oil
filter. Ensure that all seals fit properly when reassembling the filter. If the filter
leaks, the oil pump will suck air into the hydraulic system.
2. To ensure efficient operation strict attention must be paid to the oil. If any water has
leaked into the oil system, the oil has to be changed and the leakage repaired.
3. If a circulation system is provided for the propeller lubrication, approx. 3-4 litres of
new oil should be circulated through the system. Refer to: "Propeller hub lubrication
Procedures”
4. Test the stand-by pump.

Every 6. months.
1. Check mechanical control transmissions. Retighten if necessary.
2. Check oil filters for pumps(X). Clean in gas oil if necessary.
Make sure the cover is correctly mounted. Otherwise the hydraulic system will suck
air and cause malfunction. Note! Remember the gaskets underneath the bolt heads.

Yearly inspection.
1. Check the waterside of the oil cooler. If necessary clean it according to instruction
given in section: "Oil cooler".
2. Examine the gearwheels thoroughly for faults or cracks.
3. Check pipes and gearbox for leakages.
4. Oil samples from the gear oil sump shall be analysed by oil supplier or another
approved laboratories. Chemical analysis and particle counting should be made.
The cleanliness of the oil should at least meet the requirements of ISO 17/14.
Change the oil if necessary.
5. For gear output shaft sealing equipped with grease nipple: add max. 2cm3 grease.

Every dry-docking, preferably every year.

1. Check the oil in the propeller hub. Follow the same procedure as for gear oil.
"Propeller hub lubrication procedures"
2. Check the stern tube glands for leakages.
3. Check the propeller hub for leakages.
4. Check that the propeller blades are undamaged and that all bolts and plugs are tight
and properly secured.

Inspection every 2 year

1 For installations with change over valve, lubricate this with “Silica” grease.

Every 5 years.
Check the diaphragms in diaphragm valves. During normal operation the
diaphragms have a lifetime of abt. 10 years. Any diaphragm showing indication of
hardening and ruptures should be renewed.

Scana Volda as Filling and draining of oil for

A. Draining the propeller hub and sterntube.

With the ship in dry-dock the propeller hub and stern tube can be drained as
follows:
Propeller hub:
1. Shut the three-way cock between the inner stern tube gland and the
gravity tank.
2. Remove the two drain plugs (between the propeller blades), one at the top
and one at the bottom of the bottom of the hub, and let the oil flow out.
The hub can be drained more quickly through one of the propeller blade
bolt holes, and if the propeller blades are to be removed, this method is
recommended.
Sterntube:
Turn the three-way cock and close the connection to the gravity tank
through oil pipe and open for drainage of stern tube. To save time, a hand
pump or a small electric oil pump can be connected to the cock and the oil pumped
into an oil drum or similar.

B. Filling the propeller hub, shafting and sterntube.

For suitable oils, see special page.
Propeller hub and shafting:
1. Turn the propeller hub to bring one of the air vent plugs up and remove this.
2. Turn the three-way cock to obtain connection between the inner stern- tube
gland and the gravity tank.
3. Pump oil through the bottom plug hole of the propeller hub or through a
propeller blade bolt hole.
4. When only clean oil is coming out of the propeller top plug hole, refit this plug.
5. With continued pumping, the oil will fill up the bore in the propeller shaft and fill
up the stern tube and gravity tank. The oil level in the gravity tank may be
checked through the sight glass. (To save time, oil can also be filled directly
into the gravity tank).
6. Finally check that all plugs and propeller blade bolts
are tightened and properly locked.

Gearbox:
For Scana Volda gearboxes single grade heavy-duty type gear oil must be used.
Alternatively a motor oil or hydraulic oil can be used if these oils fulfil the main
requirements as specified below. Oil specification for alternative oil types must be sent to
Scana Volda for approval for each separate case. Multi grade oil of any kind can not be
used.

The oil shall at least fulfil the following:

Viscosity: 150-100 cst at 40°C (ISO-standard)
Min. flash point: 150°C

Important! For this inst. no: 1668-1672 use 100 cst at 40°C.

Following alternative oil type is approved:

Load carrying property (FZG gear test): Load step 12 or higher.
Antifoaming additives: applied.

Do not mix motor oil or hydraulic oil with gear oils, even if they fulfil the requirements of
these specifications. Very small amounts of such oil types mixed in the gear oil can lower
the quality considerably.

Change of oil in service:

The oil is to be renewed when laboratory tests show that something of the following has
happened:

1. Discoloured oil from water content in the oil (grey oil) or from oxides (black oil).
2. Too high amounts of insoluble particles in the oil.
3. The viscosity is lower than 15% below the specified new viscosity.
4. Other serious irregularities specified from the oil company or the laboratory.

Propeller/Sterntube:
Oil types for propeller and stern tube can be the same as specified for the gearbox.
Alternatively it may be used motor oils with viscosity SAE30 or SAE40.
If your oil supplier has special made oil types for stern tubes/propellers available, these
oils can be preferred.

Important! The various types of stern tube seals may have special requirements for the
stern tube oil. In that case, follow the oil specifications given by the stern tube seal
supplier and stern tube supplier.
