1. The push pull rod in the propeller shaft must be moved astern (into the shaft) to
make room for the mounting of the push-pull rod flange, by moving the propeller
blades to forward pitch before launching. Make sure there is room for tools aft of
flange.

2. Fit the shaft coupling preliminary to the shaft as described under "Shaft-coupling
Mounting" with 10 mm space to gear box flange.

3. The lining up of the gearbox can now be carried out with 10 mm clearance
between the flanges. Check that the distance between the fore end of propeller
shaft and output gear flange is according to the shafting drawing. See instructions
for alignment.

4. Bolt the gearbox to the bed using clearance bolts and four fitted bolts. The fitted
bolts are to be mounted on each side at the forward and aft end of the gearbox.

5. Dismount the shaft coupling, and move it back to give access to the push-pull rod
coupling.

6. Push the servomotor piston rod to its extreme forward position.

7. Apply light lube oil at the threads of


the rod ends and screw the flanges
on to the rods ends. If the push-pull
rod is too far aft to allow fitting of
flange screws with the flange in
place, insert the screws in the
flange before this is mounted on the
rod. The flanges should not be flush
with the end of the rods. See
drawing.

8. Smear the flange screws with with


anti-seizure coating.
Push the servo piston aft and screw the flange screws into the piston rod flange by
hand. (By moving the piston, the control handle on the reduction gear should
simultaneously be moved to "ahead" pitch). If it is difficult to reach the screw
heads with a wrench, the piston can be moved forward by using air pressure (7
bar) at the aft side of the servo piston. (Connect at one of the hydraulic pump
connections and pull control handle on reduction gear to "astern"). When doing
this, it is important to retain the propeller shaft in its correct position by using a
wood spacer between the shaft and servo.

9. Be sure that the rod spigot enters properly in the piston rod.

10. Tighten the screws acc. to connection flange drawing and lock with locking screws.

11. Mount the shaft coupling as described in section "Shaft coupling, Mounting".

In case of packing problems or short delivery time, the propeller blades can be sent
separately packed (un-mounted). If blades are sent separately, the shipyard will normally
do the mounting, unless otherwise is agreed upon.

Mounting procedure:

1 Make sure that the blade seal is properly fitted and in good condition. Wipe the
bearing surfaces in the hub and the crank disc clean, and lubricate the seal and
the bearing with clean oil.

2 Check that the fitted pins and the sealing and bearing surfaces on the blade are
clean and in good condition.

3 Attach a suitable lifting tackle to the blade and lower it gently into position. The
arrow stamped on the blade root shall point forwards.

4 Ensure bolts to be clean and without damage –especially on threads and sealing
surface.
- For E/CP68 - 135 propellers:

A. Fit 2 light oil lubricated


o-rings to each blade flange bolt.

B. Put O-rings loose on bolt while


entering threads fully.
Take care not to damage O-rings on threads.

C. Slide O-rings into gap between bolt shaft and


hole in blade flange making sure O-rings is not
squeezed between bolt head and blade flange
or damaged by the threads

- For E/CP52 – 62 propellers,


fit 1 monell disc to each bolt.

5 Smear the bolt threads with anti-seizing lubrication as referred to on assembly


drawing to prevent seizing of the bolt threads. This is important due to the poor
sliding properties of the stainless steel bolts.

6 Insert the bolts and screw light in by hand to avoid seizing in the threads. Tighten
the bolts according to the correct torque found on the propeller assembly drawing.

7 When all work on the propeller is completed, secure the blade bolts by spot
welding the locking bars to the bolts heads using stainless steel electrodes.

Important! To achieve acceptable conditions for the final alignment and jack-test, Scana
Volda recommends that the vessel must be afloat, and all welding-work on the hull must
be finished. Scana Volda does not recommend the use of other alignment methods or
alignment performed under other conditions. For this project, Hyuandai Mipo Dockyards
has the responsibility for the shaft alignment and their procedure shall be followed based
on their demands. Alignment in dock is a request from the shipyard and may cause
inaccurate alignment as the deflections in the hull after launching could result in
unacceptable variations in the bearing load. Because their procedure deviates from the
above recommendation, Scana Volda does not take the responsibility in case the shaft
alignment fails.

1. Before the propeller shaft is connected to the gear box, the gear box shall be
fastened to the foundation bed completely with steel chocks or by chocking resin.
Follow the guidelines on the chocking plan for the specific installation. Be careful
not to alter the position of the gearbox during the chocking procedure or when
tightening the foundation bolts.
Make the shaft coupling loose on the shaft, and move it to the correct longitudinal
position and do the connecting between the flanges. Also remember to couple the
propeller pitch control system in the centre of the propeller shaft.

2. Final check of the alignment is now to be done by the jack-test. The purpose of the
jack test, is to find the actual bearing load. Since the jacking point is located a
distance away from the bearing, the shaft will, when jacking, bend slightly before it
is lifted clear off the bearing. Therefore a certain jack height is required to lift the
shaft off from the bearing. Also, one should not lift the shaft so that contact is made
between the shaft and the bearing on the opposite side and the bearing may be
damaged.
3. First place the jack on the correct position for JACK 1, and place a dial gauge at the
same length-position. Pump pressure into the jack until the shaft has lifted
according to the first jack height given in the table.
4. Note the jack pressure for this height and repeat for the other jack heights given in
the table. Do this jack procedure 3 times to get a mean pressure for the readings.

Now the jack and the dial gauge are placed on the position given for the other jack
positions. The jacking procedure is repeated for the new jack-positions.

5. The jacking forces can now be calculated by multiplying piston area in the jack with the
pressure. It is important to use a jack and an accurate pressure gauge which both are
in good condition, and where the piston area is known. Please fill in the enclosed jack
test table with readings from the jack tests with pressures and calculated jack forces
for corresponding lifting-heights. Return the filled in table to Scana Volda as after
doing the final alignment.
6. The results of the jack-tests is to be given to Scana Volda as for evaluation of the
alignment, and giving approval for the alignment-result. For aft gear bearing the jack
load shall be between 2 and 30 kN. In case the jack result is abnormal, corrective
actions must be performed.

Description
At its forward end the propeller shaft is connected to the servomotor by means of a SKF-
type oil pressure-mounted coupling. The coupling is built up as a heavy muff extending
forward as a neck, which provides ample space for the connection for the propeller pitch
control transmitting system. The neck of the coupling is flanged to the output shaft of the
reduction gear box.

Between the coupling and the shaft an inner sleeve (item 2) is fitted. The bore of the
sleeve is cylindrical and has a clearance fit on the forward end of the shaft. The outside of
the sleeve is slightly tapered and carefully fitted in a corresponding tapered surface inside
the coupling. At the thinner aft end of the sleeve a threaded piston (item 3) with seals fits
into the aft end of the coupling. The aft cylinder is used to push the coupling on the
tapered sleeve and is also referred to as the mounting cylinder.

The coupling has radial oil holes. Through these holes oil (pos. 10) is injected to build up
a film between the coupling and the tapered surface of the sleeve. The pressure in this
film will increase the diameter of the coupling hub.

When, at the same time, oil is pumped into the cylinder (through hole, item 11), the
coupling will be pushed onto the tapered sleeve. By releasing the oil film pressure, the
coupling will contract. This contraction will give a friction and a shrink between the
coupling parts and the shaft, strong enough to transmit the propeller torque and thrust.
The oil holes are closed with screw plugs.

Mounting

This mounting instruction relates to installation and demounting of OF-coupling for


service and maintenence purposes. For installation of preassembled coupling on yard
delivery, see installation manual.
Mounting operation as described on the drawing V30158

The following equipment is required:


a) Mounting pump (hydraulic hand pump for pressure up to 200-300 kp/cm2 with an oil
capacity of 3 litres).

b) 2 oil injectors SKF-type nr. 226400 or similar for pressure up to 1000 kp/cm2. (For
larger shaft couplings (OF320 and up), 4 injectors could be required.)

c) Special wrench for mounting piston (item 5).

d) For oil pressure mounting a clean particle-free engine or hydraulic mineral oil is to
be used in the injectors as well as in the mounting pump. The oil shall have a
viscosity of 100-150cst. Fatty oils are not suitable as they cause a lasting reduction
in the friction between the coupling and the sleeve.

1. Do not use gloves and keep a clean working area. Check the sleeve seating on
the forward end of the shaft. Remove and polish any burrs or scratches. The
surface must be clean and free of oil. Remove the stopper (4).
If a shaft brake or other equipment is to be fitted to the coupling or the shaft, make
sure it is put onto the shaft before the coupling is mounted.

2. Clean the tapered bore of the coupling. Remove burrs and polish any scratches.

3. Smear the threads of the mounting piston (item 3) with anti-seizure coating, and
with the seal (item 8) mounted, push it on the shaft.

4. Push the coupling on to the shaft, exercise treat care to avoid any damage or
scratching of shaft or coupling.

5. Clean the bore of the sleeve. It shall not have any lubrication and must therefore
be thoroughly wiped clean of any oil (To facilitate the mounting of the sleeve (item
2), the shaft end should be wetted with clean solar oil).

6. Push the sleeve (item 2) onto the shaft and mount the stopper(4) so that the
locating face makes a locating point for the coupling sleeve and push sleeve
forward until it stops against the stopper (4).

7. Coat the entire outer tapered surface of the sleeve (item 2) with oil and pull the
coupling (item 1) forward upon the sleeve taper until it stops, properly centered on
the sleeve. During this operation it is very important to bring the holes in the
coupling to coincide with those in the counter flange according to control marks on
the flanges. Insert two of the fitted bolts to ensure that the coupling is retained in
this position.
It is important that the sleeve (2) has not moved, but still coincides with the
stopper.

8. Screw the mounting piston (item 3) on the sleeve taking care that the threads
enter properly. Use special wrench and screw this completely in.

9. The SKF oil injectors, SKF-226400 and the SKF mounting pump, (or equal) are
now to be made ready.

To fill a SKF injector unscrew the oil feeder, dip the nozzle into the oil and pull the
piston handle. Then turn the nozzle upwards and by pushing in the valve ball and
pressing the piston slightly, permit any trapped air to escape. Now screw the
feeder back on the injector and screw the injectors in the oil holes (item 10) on the
coupling. Open the vent screws and pump a few strokes until clean oil free of air
seeps through at the screw. Then shut the vent screws and the injectors are ready
for operation. Connect the mounting pump to the oil inlet (11).

Caution: No leakage in the injector connections is permitted.

10. To pressurise cylinder operate the mounting pressure pump until a pressure of
approx. 10 bar can be observed on the manometer. Check for leakages.

11. Now operate the SKF-injectors to build up a pressure between the tapered
surfaces to expand the coupling diametrically. After a short time the operators of
the injectors will observe that the injector pressures do not increase any more.
Then start to operate the mounting pump simultaneously with a continued
operation of the injectors. The pressure in the mounting cylinder will now push the
coupling up on the tapered sleeve, but this pressure should not exceed 150-200
bar. (The injector’s pressure may during this process reach approx. 1000 bar). The
movement of the coupling relative to the stationary sleeve shall proceed until the
aft end of the coupling reaches a step on the outer diameter of the piston
(item 3). It is important not to exceed this limit.

NB!
The shaft and the coupling may be damaged if the coupling is pulled further than
this recommendation. At this point open the vent screws in the injector pumps to
release the pressure. The coupling will then contract and provide a friction force
against the sleeve and the shaft, ample to transmit the propeller torque. Release
the mounting pump after approximately 20minutes.

Detach the mounting equipment, vent and drain oil from the coupling, and replace
the screw plugs in the oil hole openings used for injectors and pump.

The coupling should remain unloaded for at least 4 hours in order to secure
adequate connection.

14. Mount and tighten the bolts on the flange according to torque on drawing of OF
coupling.

Dismounting

Following special tools are needed:


a. Mounting pump (special jack pump with an oil tank capacity of approx. 3 litre,
having a pressure capacity of 200-300 bar).

b. 2 pcs. (4 for larger coupling) oil injectors of SKF design no. 226400 or similar,
capable of giving an oil pressure of approx. 1000 bar.

c. Special wrench for mounting piston (item 5).

d. For oil pressure mounting a clean particle-free engine or hydraulic mineral oil is to
be used in the injectors as well as in the mounting pump. The oil shall have a
viscosity of 100-150cst. Fatty oil is not suitable as they cause a lasting reduction in
the friction between the coupling and the sleeve.

Dismounting procedure:
1. Remove the flange coupling bolts and clean the coupling and surroundings
thoroughly. Do not use gloves and keep a clean working area.

2. The SKF oil injectors, SKF 226400 and mounting pump are now to be made
ready. To fill the SKF injector, unscrew the oil feeder, dip the nozzle into the oil
and pull the piston handle. Turn the nozzle upwards, and by pushing in the valve
ball and pressing the piston slightly, permit any trapped air to escape. Now screw
the feeder back on the injector and screw the injectors in the oil (item 10) at the
coupling. Open the vent screw and pump a few strokes until clean oil free of air
seeps through at the screws. Then shut the vent screws and the injectors are
ready for operation.

Caution: No leakage in the injector connection is permitted.

3. Connect the mounting pressure pumps to the hole (item 11).


Pump a quantity of oil with the mounting pump until the pump pressure rises to
about 25 bar and maintain this pressure. This quantity of oil in the cylinder has the
purpose of braking and dampening the coupling movement when it later slides off
the tapered sleeve.

4. Operate the injectors simultaneously and slowly to permit the pressure in the oil
film between the coupling and the sleeve to build up and thus expending the
coupling diametrically. After a few strokes the injectors should feel rather compact
and heavy to operate. Maintain these pressures by slowly operating the injectors
until the coupling loosens. This is usually characterised by a cracking sound, and
simultaneously the pressure in the mounting pump rises. This operation may take
approximately 15 minutes.

Now open the vent screw on the mounting pump to release the pressure and
continue a steady operation of the injectors until the coupling slides astern on the
tapered sleeve.

5. Make sure the shaft is completely clean and free of burrs and scratches and push
the coupling aft when it loosens from the shaft.
Handle coupling parts with great care to avoid burrs or scratches on contact
surfaces. Maintain a high level of cleanliness.

A. Starting main engine

1. Check the oil level in the gearbox. Replenish if necessary.

2. Set the selector switch for stand-by oil pump in “Auto” position for reduction gear and
main engine.

3. Check that the oil pressures are according to "Data Sheet".


Note: The oil pressures may be somewhat higher when the oil is cold.

4. Check that the Main clutch is disconnected.


The main engine can now be started upon a signal from the bridge (see procedures
from Caterpillar)

5. When the main engine is started and the mechanical main oil pump has gained normal oil
delivery, the stand-by pump is stopped automatically.

6. For some ships there may be special instructions made by the shipbuilder for starting up of
engine. If so, follow these instructions.

B. General rules

1. Check all pressures and the oil temperature regularly. Any discrepancies should be
investigated at once.
The servo pressure may vary considerably, especially during manoeuvres but also during
constant operation due to small self-adjusting movements of the propeller.
The oil temperature should be kept as indicated in "Data Sheet" by adjusting the water flow
through the oil cooler.

2. The sterntube glands, the servomotor box and the oil pumps should be checked regularly
for overheating and unusual sounds.

3. Regularly check the equipment for oil leaks that may develop. Keep the equipment clean
and tidy.

4. Check that the oil level in the stern tube gravity tank is always at the top when running.

C. Command transefer between Bridge panels and ECR panels

See Scana Mar-El manual, Ch. 2.3.

D. “Engine shut down”


It may be convenient to combine the "Engine shut down" procedure with a check on the alarm
circuit and an automatic starting of the stand-by-pump.

This can be done as follows:


1. Stop the main engine. The stand-by-pump should now start automatically, and the alarm
should sound. Accept the alarms for servo pressure and start of stand-by pump.

E. Modes of control and referring clutch conditions


• Combinator/Individual mode – M/E variable speed, S/G offline, C1 + C2 engaged, lever on
gear box in PTO-mode.
• PTO mode - M/E constant RPM with S/G online, C1 + C2 engaged, lever on gear box in
PTO-mode.
• PTI mode – M/E constant RPM mode with motor (booster) online, C1 + C2 engaged, lever
on gear box in PTO-mode.
• PTH mode – M/E stopped, motor drives propeller, C1 disengaged, C2 engaged, lever on
gear box in PTH-mode.

All mode shifts must be performed from the ECR-panel.

Clutch assignment:
• C1 = Main clutch
• C2 = PTH clutch

F. Combinator/Individual mode

The remote control system can only be operated in individual mode from the ECR panel, and will
also automatically be set into this mode when the command is transferred to the ECR panel. There
is one potentiometer for controlling propeller pitch and one for controlling Engine rpm.

The remote control system will automatically be set into combined mode when the command is
transferred to one of the bridge panels. The system controls the vessels propulsion units by input
from the operator via one lever on each bridge panel. By operating the lever, the propeller pitch
and main engine are controlled according to the combinator curve.

The vessel can not operate in combinator mode from the ECR panel.

G. PTO-mode (Constant RPM/Shaft generator mode)

The CONSTANT RPM mode set the engine to a preset RPM. This mode can only be selected
from the ECR panel. The pitch can now be adjusted by the combinator lever from all panels, but
the system maintains the RPM. It is not possible to disconnect the CONSTANT RPM if the
SHAFT GENERATOR mode is selected.

To activate the CONSTANT RPM mode, this procedure shall be followed:


1. Transfer the command to the Main Bridge panel.
2. Push the button CONSTANT RPM

To de-activate the CONSTANT RPM mode, this procedure shall be followed:


1. Check that the shaft generator is not engaged.
2. Push the button CONSTANT RPM.

To activate the SHAFT GENERATOR MODE, this procedure shall be followed.


1. Activate CONSTANT RPM mode
2. Engage the shaft generator ( see procedures from AvK)

To de-activate the SHAFT GENERATOR MODE, this procedure shall be followed.


Dis-engage shaft generator ( see procedures from AvK)

H. PTH-mode (Power Take me Home)

Start sequence PTH mode:


1. Check that M/E is stopped
2. Set the selector switch for stand-by oil pump in “Auto” position for reduction gear.
3. Verify that main clutch (C1) is disengaged on Scana ECR-panel. If not, disengage clutch.
4. Verify that lever on gear box is in PTH-position. If not, move the lever to PTH-position.
5. Verify that PTH clutch (C3) is disengaged. If not, disengage clutch.
6. Verify that pitch is zero. If not, bring pitch to zero.
7. “Conditional ready” signal and “Unconditional ready” signal will now be present.
8. Activate el.motor due to procedures from AvK.
9. PTH-ready lamp will lit when el.motor is ready to accept load.
10. Activate PTH-clutch. The lamp, PTH-mode will now lit in all panels.

Disengage PTH-mode.

1. Disengage PTH-clutch.
2. Stop el.motor
3. Move lever to PTO-position.

Remark:
If unconditional ready signal fails, start sequence will be interrupt or already running PTH mode
will be shutdown.

I. PTI-mode (Boost from el.motor)

To activate the PTI-mode, this procedure shall be followed.


1. Verify that C1+C2 is connected.
2. Verify that lever on gear box is in PTO-position.
3. Activate CONSTANT RPM mode.
4. Engage the electrical motor ( see procedures from AvK/ Mocotech)
5. The lamp PTI-mode will now lit in all panels when PTI-mode is ready.

To de-activate the PTI-mode, this procedure shall be followed.

When installing the propeller shaft and stern tube glands, the following
points must be observed:

1. When lifting the shaft, do not apply slings on the liner of the outer gland.
2. Shaft, stern tube and glands must be cleaned thoroughly.
Make sure that the shaft has no bruises or scratches.

3. Check that both stern tube liners are provided with axial oil grooves in their total
length for oil circulation.

4. Fit the seal (15) and slide cover (5) aft and fit it to the flange by the screws (6).
Secure by punch marks. Slide the outer stern tube gland in assembled condition
and with liner fitted on to the propeller shaft.

5. Insert the shaft carefully into the stern tube, and put it forward to its proper position.
Fasten the gland carefully.

6. Slide the inner stern tube gland in assembled condition and with the liner fitted on
to the forward end of the propeller shaft and fasten it to the stern tube

7. Turn the propeller until one of the vent plugs between the blades is on the top of
the propeller.

8. Clamp the propeller shaft preliminarily in its proper position and mark this position
inside the ship for further reference.

9. Turn the propeller blades to the "ahead" position (the push-pull rod is moved
astern). If necessary, make a lever out of two planks clamped to one of the blades.

10. Install the stern tube gravity tank approx. 3-4 meters above the vessel’s load line,
and the tubing between the tank and the inner stern tube gland.

11. Before launching, fill propeller and stern tube with oil as described in letter
"Lubrication of sterntube and propeller - Procedures" - point B.

12 Check the propeller and both stern tube glands for leakages.
