OBJECTIVES
- To recognize expressions and vocabulary about adjectives to describe people, objects and places.
- To use structures and new vocabulary for describing people, objects and places.
DEAR STUDENT:
Throughout this guide you will study and use important vocabulary and
expressions for describing people, objects and places. First, you will have the
chance to review adjectives and target vocabulary. Then, you will also
understand the use and structure of questions for asking about physical
appearance. Pay attention to the use and context so you can answer those
questions. There are some exercises for practicing. Finally, you will be able to
create your own descriptions and understand people talking about specific
descriptions.
1. Introduction

Adjectives are used to tell us about nouns or pronouns. They give us information about what someone or something is
like. Check the next sentences and highlight the words you consider adjectives.
● Can you pass me the yellow pen please?
● Are you happy?
● Carlos has an expensive car. It has leather seats.
Now, use a complete sentence to describe the images below.

1. 2. 3.

2. Appropriation
Let´s answer the next common question:
Who are you?

An adjective is a word that tells us more about a noun. It "describes" or "modifies" noun:
The big dog was hungry.
In these examples, the adjective is in bold and the noun that it modifies is in italics.
1. An adjective often comes BEFORE a noun: ● I have a green car.
● We saw a dark sky.
● This is an interesting story.
2. Sometimes an adjective comes AFTER a verb: ● My car is green.
● The sky became dark.
● His story seemed interesting.
3. Adjectives can also ● They were empty.
modify pronouns (She is beautiful). ● I thought it seemed strange.
● Those are not expensive.
4. We can also use adjectives without a noun after ● Your idea sounds interesting.
the verbs of the senses: feel, look, smell, ● I don’t like this soup. It tastes horrible.
sound, taste. ● You look tired.
● These cookies smell delicious.
● I feel depressed.
5. Adjectives in English have no plural. They are ● These are my favorite shoes.
always singular. ● She has blue eyes.
● It’s very expensive.
6. We can use very and quite before the adjectives. ● It’s quite expensive.
Note that we can often use two or more adjectives together (a beautiful young French lady / it is black and white).

Adjectives also have a word order. Take a look at the chart:

Note: Not everyone agrees on this order. Opinions differ on age and shape.
We do not normally use more than three adjectives before a noun.

NO PLACE LIKE HOME
Last October Vicky Samson ran away from home. How did it all start? “I hated school. We always had so much to do, and
I didn’t see the point of it all. But it was worse at home. My parents just didn’t understand. It was always: Do this! Don’t
do that! We only spoke to each other when we were fighting. One day I just couldn't stand it anymore. That day, Vicky
didn’t go to school. She put some clothes in her backpack, threw her books away, went to the bus station, and took a bus
to New York City.
“At first it was pretty exciting. There were bright lights, theaters, and stores, and some really interesting people. I had to
sleep on the streets, but I didn’t mind. I was free-no school, no homework, and no parents.”
But soon there was no food and no money either. “Someone ripped off my purse about a week after I arrived. I couldn’t
get a decent job because I was only 15, and you have to be 16. I worked in a restaurant for a while, washing dishes. That
was really funny because I’d always complained about doing the dishes at home. I didn’t make much money, but at least
it was warm.”
Then the restaurant closed down, and Vicky was back on the streets. She was cold, hungry, and miserable, but she
survived until one night about a week before Christmas. “I was walking down the streets when I looked into someone’s
front window. There was a girl there, just like me. She was decorating a Christmas tree. I thought, “If I were at home, I’d
be decorating our tree now. Then I couldn’t help it. I just started crying. I sat down on the sidewalk and cried and cried.”
Luckily for Vicky, the man who lived in the house, Mr. Escobar, came home when she was sitting there. He took Vicky
inside, and Mrs. Escobar gave her something to eat. “They were so nice. I told them my whole story. They offered to pay
for my ticket home, but I didn’t want that. I thought my parents would be angry.”
But the next day she was back home again. While Vicky was in her living room, Mrs. Escobar went upstairs to the bedroom
and called the police. Five hours later, Vicky’s father arrived to pick her up.
“It was the best Christmas present I’d ever had,” said Mrs. Samson. “We’re so grateful to the Escobars for what they did.”
Today Vicky Samson came from school at four o’clock. She watched TV for half an hour. Then she did her homework. She’s
working hard right now because she has her final exams soon. After dinner, while she was helping with the dinner, she
talked to her parents about a problem she has been having at school.
