CAMBRIDGE GLOBAL ENGLISH 9: UNIT 3 PHOTOCOPIABLE ACTIVITIES

Photocopiable 9: Multi-word verb squares

Aim: Speaking – learners practise explaining the meaning of multi-word verbs from Lesson 3.1.
Preparation time: 10 minutes
Completion time: 15 minutes
Language focus:
• Multi-word (phrasal and prepositional) verbs from the interview in Lesson 3.1 – look round, stay on,
go back, catch up with, eat out, to take time off, look forward to, end up
• Understanding expressions from the context.

Materials: One set of double-sided Multi-word verbs squares for each group. To make these, carefully
photocopy Side B on the back of Side A. Cut along the dashed line on Side A, as indicated. Each card
should have the definition and an example on the back.
Procedure:
• Organise learners into groups of 3–4. Tell them that they are going to play a game with the double-
sided cards in their groups.
• Distribute one set of Multi-word verbs game squares tor each group.
• Demonstrate the activity. Pick up a card and read the multi-word verb and the example sentence.
Elicit the meaning. Tell learners to turn over the card and check.
• Learners write definitions for phrasal verbs on the back of squares.

Differentiation ideas:
• In less confident groups or classes, use only the first 12 squares. More confident/enthusiastic learners
choose more phrasal verbs and create their own squares. If necessary, brainstorm a list and write it on
the board.
• Allow time for learners to play the memory game.
• Circulate and support less confident learners.
• Give the class feedback on common errors at the end of the activity.
