Torq-Matic Canrig Sec-05
Torq-Matic Canrig Sec-05
1. Check for external oil leaks and repair as necessary. This is extremely important.
Low hydraulic oil could cause premature failure of the HPU.
2. Check the lubricant level in the spinner gear box. Top up as necessary.
3. Check hydraulic hose and fittings for damage. Replace chafed or deteriorated
hoses as necessary.
4. Check for loose, missing, or corroded bolts, pins, keepers, and cotter pins.
Replace or tighten as necessary.
WARM-UP PROCEDURE
A warm-up procedure is essential at ambient temperatures below +40°F (4°C). Run the
warm up function for a minimum of 5 minutes, allowing sufficient time to warm up the
system if the wrench hasn’t been used in the last hour. (See Section 2.3, page 2-8)
OPERATING CHECKLIST
NEVER RUN THE WRENCH OR SPINNER ON COLLAR SPIRALS OR HARD
BANDING!
2. Read all warning and caution tag information provided for safe operation of the
wrench.
3. Inspect the wrench at the beginning of each work shift. Defects should be corrected
immediately.
6. Use the Device Test Screen to cycle each device to check for normal operation prior
to operating wrench in auto mode.
7. Select the desired Pipe Profile from the Pipe Profile Screen or manually enter
desired torque value on the Main Screen.
8. Adjust Trip Position by pressing the number box. Position is measured from the fully
retracted position forward. The Hole Center position and the Park/Home position can
also be adjusted in this manner.
9. To run the wrench from the Driller’s Console, select Make/Break Console on the
Main Screen.
10. To enable Wireless Radio Control, select Make/Break Radio on the Main Screen.
11. Use Wireless Radio Control to manually spin, Make-Up or Break-Out joints. See
manual operation for details.
OPERATION
Extending and retracting the unit can be done in two modes: Low Speed Manual
Positioning or High Speed Auto-Positioning.
• Clicking and holding the Joystick to the right causes the unit to move towards Hole
Center at slow speed.
• The unit will auto-stop at Hole Center.
• Releasing the joystick at any time causes
the unit to stop.
• Clicking and holding the joystick to the left
causes the unit to move away from Hole
Center towards the Parked position.
• The unit will auto-stop at the Trip position
and at the Parked position.
• To continue moving from the Trip position,
release the joystick and click and hold it to
the left.
• Double clicking the joystick to the right enters the unit into High Speed Auto-
Positioning Mode
• This will cause the unit to ramp up to full speed and then ramp down and stop at
Hole Center.
• Double clicking the joystick to the left
enters the unit into High Speed Auto
Retract Mode and will cause the unit to
ramp up to full speed and then ramp
down and stop at either the Trip position
or the Parked position depending on
where the unit started.
• If the unit stopped at the Trip position,
double click to the left again to move the
unit to the Parked position.
Once in High Speed Auto-Positioning Mode, the joystick can be released and the
unit will continue to move. To stop the unit either hit the Stop Button or Single
Click the Joystick in the opposite direction.
Note: There is a HS Override feature (see Settings Screen) that is used in the
event that the position sensor is damaged and inoperable. When activated, the
unit can be moved in Slow Speed Manual Positioning Mode only.
The unit will not retract from Hole Center unless it has been lowered enough to clear the
derrick structure (Carriage unit) or raised enough to clear the floor (Arm unit). The
Upper Tong Clamp, Lower Tong Clamp, and Spinner Clamp must be open.
The unit will not extend to Hole Center unless the Upper Tong Clamp, Lower Tong
Clamp, and Spinner Clamp have been opened.
Rotate
To align the wrench with Hole Center or Mouse Hole, press and hold the Reset button
while using the horizontal joystick to move the wrench left or right. Make sure to
carefully align the wrench side to side on the pipe making sure the opening in the
wrench tongs is centered on the pipe.
Note: Never operate the wrench when not centered on the pipe. Premature wear
of the upper and lower tong pivot rings and bushing and rotation drive will result.
Vertical Lift
The Vertical Lift function is controlled by the PLC where joysticks are used to tell it to
either lift or lower the unit. Click and hold the joystick up to lift the unit or click and hold
the joystick down to lower the unit. Release the joystick to stop.
Interlocks
The unit will not lift until it has been moved forward far enough to clear the derrick
structure, and the unit can not be raised or lowered until the spinner clamp and tong
clamps have opened.
Main Wrench
The Make-Up and Break-Out functions can be controlled manually or will cycle
automatically depending on the selected operational mode.
In Manual Mode, the Make/Break joystick is moved right to close the Upper and Lower
Clamps and secure the tubular or left to open the Clamps. The joystick is then moved
up or down to either Make-Up or Break-Out the tool joint depending on the mode
selected. (See Manual and Automatic Operation for details).
Interlocks
The Make-Up and Break-Out functions will not operate unless the unit is first positioned
at Hole Center.
The Make-up operation can not be performed without first rotating the upper tong to the
Make-up position.
In Manual Mode, the Spinner joystick is moved right to open and left to close the
Spinner Clamp. The joystick is then moved either up to Spin-In or down to Spin-Out
the tool joint. (See “Manual and Automatic Operation” for details).
Interlocks
The Spinner will not operate unless the unit is positioned at Hole Center.
Manual Mode Operation
• You can use either the Wireless Radio Remote or the Manual Operation Screen with
the Driller’s Console controls for Manual Operation.
Remember to select the desired Make/Break control using the button on the
Main Operator Interface Screen to Radio or Console.
STOP
• The left joystick controls the wrench up and down, and in and out functions. Move
the joystick up to lift the wrench up and down to lower the wrench. Ensure that there
is nothing in the way of the wrench before lifting or lowering.
• Move the joystick to the right to move wrench in to Hole Center. Move the joystick
left to move wrench out from Hole Center. The wrench stops automatically at the
Trip Position. Release the joystick and actuate again to continue moving.
• Double clicking the joystick left or right will latch the movement in that direction. The
wrench will automatically move to the next position and stop.
• The center Joystick controls the Clamps and Make-Up and Break-Out Functions.
Move the Joystick left to open the clamps, or move the joystick right to close the
clamps. Holding the Reset button while operating the Joystick disables the upper
clamps.
• The right Joystick controls the Spinner Clamp, Spin In and Out Functions. Moving
the Joystick to the left will open the Spinner and Bottoms Clamps. Moving the
Joystick to the Right will close the Spinner and Bottom Clamps. Hold the Reset
Switch to disable the bottom clamp.
• Move the Joystick up to Spin In, or down to Spin Out. The Spinner and bottom
Clamp are closed during Spin In and out.
• Joystick movement controls the spinner speed. The further it is moved from the
center in either direction, the faster the Spinner runs. Use the Slow/Fast switch to
limit the maximum speed.
Make sure bottom clamps do not contact hard banding on the tool joint!
Make sure bottom clamps do not contact hard banding on the tool joint!
TUBULARS
• Break-Out – Select Break Out Mode. Move Wrench to Hole Center and align on tool
joint. Hit the Start button.
• Make sure to position the bottom dies above the hard banding to avoid damaging
the dies and having the bottom tong slip on pipe.
HEAVY WEIGHT:
• Make-Up - Move wrench to Hole Center and position spinner rollers below hard
banding on the pin end. Manually spin the pipe in and shoulder. Release spinner
and bottom clamps.
• Lift the Wrench up and align on tool joint then manually Make-Up the joint.
• Break-Out – Move wrench to Hole Center and manually break the collar connection.
• Hand start a pickup sub – Move wrench to Hole Center and align spinner rollers on
sub upper toll joint. Hold the Reset switch and manually spin in the sub. Release the
clamps and align on tool joint and manually Make-Up sub to collar.
The Hydraulic Pump Indicator displays red when the pump is off and turns green when
the pump is running.
The Warm Up button is used to run warm hydraulic oil to the wrench. Touch the minute
button and enter the desired warm up time. The time will count down indicating remaining
warm up time. The warm up function will automatically turn off after the time has expired.
Make/Break Remote or Local Button is used to set whether the Driller’s Console or the
Wireless Radio Remote has control over the Make-Up and Break-Out function. When set to
Remote (button is green), the Wireless remote Make/Break switch controls the wrench
function. The switch on the Drillers Console is disabled. Conversely, when set to Local
(Button is Orange); the Driller’s console switch has control.
Touch the Menu button at the bottom left of the Main Screen. This pop up Menu will
appear. Touch the button for the desired screen.
This number pad will display when the Manually Set Torque Value button is touched on
the Main Screen.
This screen allows the operator to define the profiles currently in use on the site. The
profiles can then be swapped quickly using the Pipe Profiler Screen.
Torque Setpoint – The desired amount of torque to be used with that pipe.
Spin In Time – The amount of time in seconds that the spinner will run to take the pipe
from uncoupled to the point when Make-Up torque is used.
Spin Out Time – The amount of time in seconds that the spinner will run to take the pipe
from the Break-Out torque point to the pipe being uncoupled.
Torque CYL Break-Out Speed – A percentage of the regular Break-Out speed if a slower
speed is required.
The manual operation screen allows the operator to manually control the individual steps
involved in the spin and torque processes from the Operator Interface rather than by using
the wireless radio remote.
Make-Up (BO Return) – Controls the clockwise torque of the Make-Up and Break-Out
Return functions.
Break-Out (MU Return) - Controls the counter-clockwise torque of the Break-Out and
Make-Up Return functions.
Spin In – Controls the clockwise motion of the spinner to tighten the pipe.
Spin Out – Controls the counter-clockwise motion of the spinner to loosen the pipe.
Torque Readout – Displays the amount of torque being applied to the pipe.
Make/Break Remote – Connects or disconnects the remote control from the system.
Remote ESD Bypass – Allows the operator to bypass the remote control unit.
SETTINGS SCREEN
The settings screen allows the operator to configure the wrench to the specifics of that rig.
Retracted Position – Arm Home Position
Trip Position – Distance in Inches from the retracted position
Hole Center Position – Distance in Inches from the retracted position
Mouse Hole Position – Distance in Inches from the retracted position
Torque Retracted Position – Tong Home Position
Torque Extended Position – Maximum Tong Rotation
Current Position – Distance in Inches from the fully retracted position
Max Spinner Pressure – The maximum amount of pressure the spinner will apply to the
pipe
Torque Gauge Delay Off Time – The time in seconds the torque gauge on the Main
Screen resets to zero for the next sequence

DIAGNOSTICS
The Auto Mode Monitor Screen allows the operator to observe the stages of operation in
Automatic Mode. This is very useful for diagnostic purposes. The wrench needs to
complete each step in order and is unable to continue if that step has not been completed.
Therefore, if the wrench is having problems completing a cycle the operator may observe
where in the cycle the wrench has stopped to aid in troubleshooting.
