Introduction
 There are 3 major impacts of Engineering
Technology:

1. Economic Impacts
2. Environmental Impacts
3. Social Impacts
Economic Impacts
 Engineering technology has increased the
economic growth especially in:

1. Oil, Gas & Petrochemical

2. Manufacturing
3. Agribusiness

Region
Oil, Gas & Petrochemical cluster is centred in the Kertih Integrated
Petrochemical Complex (KIPC) in Terengganu and the Gebeng Integrated
Petrochemical Complex (GIPC), both a part of the PETRONAS Integrated
Petrochemical complex.
KPIC focuses on ethylene-based petrochemicals and biopolymer products
while GIPC concentrate on polypropylene-based petrochemicals, oil palm
biomass and palm oil based feedstock products

Economic Impacts
 The economics of engineering is
very important in product design
and manufacturing. To minimize
product cost, chemical technologist
must take into account component
design, what materials are used,
and manufacturing processes.
 Other significant economic factors
include fringe benefits, labor,
insurance, profit, etc.

 Technology will get even better. In the future, we

could live like how people in science fiction movies
did.
Social Impacts
 Provide employment opportunities. Let’s discuss

Research & Technical

Development Production
(R&D) Sales
Research and Development (R&D)
 Sets up and operate laboratory apparatus to test products
chracteristic – clarity, chemical contents, temperature
 Uses complex instrumentation for testing
 Involved in pilot plants
Research and Development (R&D)
Production
 Supervise or operates the manufacturing process
 Inspects the quality of the product or amount of product
produced every day
 Normal routine : adjust valve to regulate equipments, start
pumps or compressor or shut down a system if safety is
questionable
Technical Sales & Development
 Concerned with identifying and meeting the needs of the
customer
 Sell the product to distributor and train them on the benefits
and limitations of the product
 Study the characteristics of the products – technical knowledge
