Introduction

Rationale

Our topic is all about the Coping strategies in dealing with learning difficulties. Coping

strategies are the behaviors, thoughts, and emotions that you use to adjust to the changes that

occur in your life. There are many coping styles that people use, and some may prove more

effective than others, depending on the nature of the stressful situation and the person who is

employing them. A learning difficulty (also referred to as a learning disability) can be described

as an issue with the brain’s ability to process information. Individuals who have a learning

difficulty may not learn in the same way or as quickly as their peers, and they might find certain

aspects of learning, such as the development of basic skills, to be challenging. Some learning

difficulties can also make it difficult for an individual to focus which can be a hindrance to all

students in dealing with their academic performance, It can be verbal or nonverbal. Verbal

learning difficulties affect one’s ability to read, write, or otherwise process spoken or written

words, while nonverbal learning challenges can make it harder for an individual to process visual

information or master abstract concepts like fractions. This study focuses on the students who are

having a hard time trying to understand or learning in their class subject, which is considered

their weakness. This problem is very common for all students.

It Is hence, imperative for alternative methods of learning to be adopted for such

individuals as well as meet their needs. Learning difficulties may be identified as mild or severe

which can subsequently impact the academic performance of the individual. Adopting behavioral

teachings that are specifically designed towards addressing the individual’s learning difficulty

can help improve the condition of academic performance of the individual. An estimated four

million people have been Identified with various types and degrees of learning difficulties. A

significant majority of them tend to cope with more than one type of learning difficulty. Learning

difficulties can be considered as neurological challenges that affect the way and manner which

the individual’s brain receives, process, stores and subsequently analyzes information. Learning

difficulties can primarily be diagnosed in schools since they affect an individual’s reading,

writing and mathematical skills. Subsequently, some cases cannot be diagnosed until the

individual reaches higher level of education or in some cases starts working.

A 2018 study found that a sample number of 15-year-old Filipino students ranked last in

reading comprehension out of 79 countries. They also ranked 78 th in science and math. One key

insight from this study is it implies those tested mostly came from public schools. Hence, the

crisis also lies in the fact that a lot of Filipinos can’t read or do simple math. It goes without

saying that having this constant crisis has its long-term effects. These include disinformation,

poor decision-making, and other social concerns. Difficulty in concentration is again one of the

common struggles of students, which can lead to a decline in productivity.
