Chapter I
Introduction
Rationale
Our topic is all about the Coping strategies in dealing with learning difficulties. Coping
strategies are the behaviors, thoughts, and emotions that you use to adjust to the changes that
occur in your life. There are many coping styles that people use, and some may prove more
effective than others, depending on the nature of the stressful situation and the person who is
employing them. A learning difficulty (also referred to as a learning disability) can be described
as an issue with the brain’s ability to process information. Individuals who have a learning
difficulty may not learn in the same way or as quickly as their peers, and they might find certain
aspects of learning, such as the development of basic skills, to be challenging. Some learning
difficulties can also make it difficult for an individual to focus which can be a hindrance to all
students in dealing with their academic performance, It can be verbal or nonverbal. Verbal
learning difficulties affect one’s ability to read, write, or otherwise process spoken or written
words, while nonverbal learning challenges can make it harder for an individual to process visual
information or master abstract concepts like fractions. This study focuses on the students who are
having a hard time trying to understand or learning in their class subject, which is considered
individuals as well as meet their needs. Learning difficulties may be identified as mild or severe
which can subsequently impact the academic performance of the individual. Adopting behavioral
teachings that are specifically designed towards addressing the individual’s learning difficulty
can help improve the condition of academic performance of the individual. An estimated four
million people have been Identified with various types and degrees of learning difficulties. A
significant majority of them tend to cope with more than one type of learning difficulty. Learning
difficulties can be considered as neurological challenges that affect the way and manner which
the individual’s brain receives, process, stores and subsequently analyzes information. Learning
difficulties can primarily be diagnosed in schools since they affect an individual’s reading,
writing and mathematical skills. Subsequently, some cases cannot be diagnosed until the
A 2018 study found that a sample number of 15-year-old Filipino students ranked last in
reading comprehension out of 79 countries. They also ranked 78 th in science and math. One key
insight from this study is it implies those tested mostly came from public schools. Hence, the
crisis also lies in the fact that a lot of Filipinos can’t read or do simple math. It goes without
saying that having this constant crisis has its long-term effects. These include disinformation,

are a lot of students having learning difficulties at Marao Senior High School. We want to know
or discover what the coping strategies of MNHS Grade 12 students in dealing with their learning
difficulties and how they manage to deal with this problem. In that way, they can share their
experiences, which can also be helpful and useful for students. To know what are the possible
reasons why they are having Learning Difficulties, we will conduct this type of research.
