CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM
Introduction

Many aspects of the peoples live and community as a whole. Medicine,

trade, and education are just among the few fields severely affected by the said

pandemic. And its unpresented occurrence challenged the readiness and

initiative of the government’s system. For the field of education, a continuity

plan for learning has been laid, and actions were taken to ensure that the

learners still acquire access to education despite the present situation.

The learning community plan of the Department of Education (DepEd)

included the Implementation of the different modalities of learning delivery.

These modalities are: Face-to-face learning, distance learning, blended

learning, and homeschooling. However, among these modalities, only the

distance learning was allowed to be implemented in the public schools to

ensure the safety of both students (specifically Senior High Schools students)

and teachers. With this modality, students are at home learning at their own

pace as they answer modules, attend online classes and answer online tests

and activities, or listen to radios and watch TV programs airing educational

contents. This is the set-up of the so called “new normal” in the brought a lot of

new changes and a lot of new problems to teachers, parents and students.
Older students might want to come up with their own strategies to try.

Younger students such as Senior High School Students might needed more

help coming up with strategies and learning how to use them. Coping up with

new normal learning modality would brought clear learnings to students as

they struggle generally in their academical performances which usually leads to

lacking of motivations answering modules and lacking of interests participating

extra curricular activities such as P.E’s, and mental health related learnings

which are very essentials for students to come up and aim actively. This shows

the importance of own strategies and techniques for learners to do their part

more and adjust more in coping new challenges and struggles between learning

and comprehending. With the history of distance learning encompassing so

many different learning environments, we need to find a definition that fits all

situations.

Theoretical Framework

Savedra (2020) commented that the pandemic the whole world is

experiencing right now is a potentiality one of the greatest threaths in global

education, a gigantic educational crisis. He supported the claim saying that as

of March 28, 2020, the Covid-19 pandemic is causing more than 1.6 children

and youth to be out of school in 161 countries. This number is close to 80% of

the world’s enrolled students.

Students and teachers at all levels of education are transitioning

from classroom to computer as the number of confirmed Covid-19 cases

continues to rise. Not every subject lends itself to a smooth transition to

distance learning, as students and instructors have discovered. Distance

learning has presented challenges to students in coping with the flow of

learning and trying to adapt to online and modular learning modalities.

Accroding to Perez (2020), teachers are worried that modular distance learning

will not work to some of the students because aside from they can’t read and

comprehend on their own; their parents are also not capable of guiding them

because they too are not capable of reading with comprehension as well.

Furthermore, based on the reports about suicidal cases in Bicol, online

learning difficulties such as phone signal challenges, Internet connection

problems, and cost buying load for data were the most feasible reasons behind

the suicide (Recaña, 2020).

Even before, students have been struggling and coping with a lot of

difficulties in many aspects of their lives. Mazo (2015) observed that student’s

struggles are found everywhere, that is, at home, with friends, in school, in the

classroom. That’s why, we’ve come up to different strategies in coping up with

this modular learning modality. Students should create new routines and

schedules that match their strenghts. Possible strategies include: schedule

work times and break times, set a timer and keep working until it goes off, try
different apps to help with focus, work on the hardest or easiest thing first and

motivate and create area of interests answering modules.

Conceptual Framework

Coping up positively in this new normal learning, is the primary goal of

the research for students to maintain the flow of learning amodat the

pandemic. And one of the key to cope up with this is the students, as they

should do some difficult adjustments and improvements to create new ways for

their sake primarily. As the focus of the study lies on the strategies of Senior

High School students to cope up in the modular learning modality. Figure I

present the framework of the study. There are variables consider, inputs,

process, and outputs.

The inputs of the study were the demographic profile of the

respondents (students) such as; Sex, Monthly Income, and Parents Attainment.

These variables help and give clearer thoughts in the strategies should Grade-

12 students should come up and cope up with modular learning modality.

The process focused on Strategies of Senior High School students

to cope up in the Modular distance Learning modality which will be responded

by the respondents through research questionnaire survey.

Statement of the Problem

This study aimed to determine the Strategies of Grade-12 students to

cope up in modular distance learning modality in Maac National High School in

school year 2021-2022.

Specifically, this creates new answers to the questions:

1. What is the demohraphic profile of the respondents in terms of;

1.1 Sex

1.2 Monthly Income

1.3 Parents Attainment

2. What are the Strategies of Grade-12 students to cope up in the modular

distance learning modality?

3. Extend and Strategies of Grade-12 students to cope up in Modular

distance Learning Modality in terms of sex, monthly income and parents

attainment?

Hypothesis

The researcher was guided by the hypothesis states below tested at

0.05 level of significance.

H 1. There is no significant difference in an intance of the Strategies

of Grade-12 Students on the Strategies to cope up im Modular distance

Learning modality in terms of; Sex, Monthly Income, and parents Attainment.

Significance of the Study

The outcome of the study benefits the following:

Teachers. This stufy presents the ways to come up a new style of teaching to

be more effective amidst Covid-19 pandemic. As it also provides factual

information with relevant basis to assume the assurances and effectiveness of

distances learning to a new and appropriate level.

School Staff. It enables School Staff to cope with the new strategies of

students in distance learning that student creates, over a matter of time as

own understanding and comprehension is a must, as well as strategies on how

to cope up to the Modular distance Learning Modality. And the results of the

study can be used as a primary data basis for future situation.

Students. It provides essentials of adjustments that a student should do and

come up to.

New techniques and ideal thoughts considered as strategies can brought to

students to improve and cope new style between teaching and learning.

Researcher. It provides beneficial data which are factual based-evidenced and

clarifies the correlation and strategical ways in coping distances learning that

would help Senior High School Students to cope up with Modular distance

Learning modality.

Future Resaercher. This study would be useful for future resaerchers as this

serves as factual evidence.

Scope and Delimination of the Study

This study aimed to determine the Strategies of Senior High School

students to cope up with Modular-distance Learning Modality. The respondents

of the research are the Grade -12 students of Maac National High School.

This study looked forward to the demographic profile of the

respondents (Grade 12 students) in terms of their sex, monthly income, and

parents educational attainment.

Definition of Terms

To have a clearer understanding of the study, the following are

clarified explained operationally.

Coping. Is a conscious or unconscious, strategies used to reduce unpleasant

emotions. Coping strategies be cognitions and or behaviours and can be

individual or social.

Student. Denoting someone who is studying in order to enter a particular

profession.

Sex. Either of two main categories (male and female).

Parents attainment. The highest grade-level completed by parents, measured

from high school to professional school.

Monthly income. Your gross monthly income is everything you earn in one

month, before taxes and deductions. This typically outlined on your job offer

letter, and you can find it itemized on your paycheck. Generally, if you make

regular overtime, bonuses, or commissions, you can add this to your gross

monthly income.

Strategies. A plan of action or policy designed to achieve a major or overall aim
