THE INVOLVEMENT OF GRADE 3 PARENTS IN THE IMPLEMENTATION
OF MODULAR LEARNING MODALITY AMIDST NEW COVID VARIANT
2. Abstract

The Coronavirus (COVID 19) is an infectious disease that affects

thousands of people all over the world. Juliet Bedford (2020) said that no
epidemic is ever just a health issue in isolation, and Covid-19 has emphasized
this on the global stage. We need to be looking at in in terms of an economic,
livelihood, social and political issue. Truly the pandemic affects the life of
people all over the world in many ways. To fight the spread of disease, most
countries have temporarily closed child-care centers, nurseries, primary, and
secondary schools, colleges, and universities. These tells us that education of
students is also affected by the Covid variant.
Furthermore, Modular distance learning comprises individualized
instruction that permit the learners to use the self-learning modules in print or
digital format. These SLMs were designed in the level of the learners. The use
of worksheets, textbooks, study guides and study materials are also accessible
to the learners. The teachers provide the students weekly home learning plan
to guide and ensure that the learners will accomplish all the tasks on time.
Parents are the model of the children. They are the their first teacher.
Parents play a very important role in the holistic development of their children.
Parents should support, encourage, and motivate their children to be active
and life-long learners especially amidst this pandemic.
In modular distance learning delivery amidst Covid variant, the
researcher believes that the parents are the partners of the teachers to
continue the education of the learners. The learners would learn more if the

parents have active involvement in the learning and studies of their children in
the modular distance learning delivery. This study aims to assess, strengthen,
and increase the involvement of parents in modular learning delivery modality
amidst Covid variant.
The descriptive method of research was used in which the researcher made
questionnaire as the main data gathering instrument. This action research did
not include other the parents of other grade levels and delimited to private
schools and other public school offering the Modular Distance Learning.
Findings of the study reveals that Majority of the respondents fell on the age
36-45 years old female, high school graduate and regular or permanent jobs.
Most of the parents have very high in Submit the answer sheets, modules,
work sheets and activities of the child, Refrain from answering the learning
tasks of the learner. Majority of the parents have difficulty to assist all the
learners at home and busy in household chores
Based on the finding of the study, the proposed innovative activity, Project
SAPP (School and Parents Partnership): A Tool in Strengthening the
Involvement of Parents in Modular distance learning can be used to increase
the involvement of parents in the modular distance learning delivery. It will also
motivate the involvement and participation of parents and other family
members to assist and help the learners grow, develop, and master their
lessons amidst Covid variant.

3. Context and Rationale

The Coronavirus (COVID 19) is an infectious disease that affects

thousands of people all over the world. This pandemic brought changes in our
society especially in the education system not only in the Philippines but all over
the world. To fight the spread of disease, most countries temporarily close the
child-care centers, nurseries, primary, and secondary schools including the
universities and colleges.

Moreover, Leonor Briones, the DepEd Secretary said that education should
not stop. With these, different learning delivery modalities were introduced to
cater the needs of the learners. One of the modalities is the distance learning
where learning takes place between the teacher and the learners even, they are
far from each other. This type of learning modality has three types: the online
and modular distance learning, and TV/Radio Based distance learning.

Furthermore, Modular distance learning comprises individualized instruction

that permit the learners to use the self-learning modules in print or digital format.
These SLMs were designed in the level of the learners. The use of worksheets,
textbooks, study guides and study materials are also accessible to the learners.
The teachers provide the students weekly home learning plan to guide and
ensure that the learners will accomplish all the tasks on time.
Parents are the model of the children. They are the their first teacher.
Parents play a very important role in the holistic development of their children.
Parents should support, encourage, and motivate their children to be active and

variant. Teachers will find it difficult if the parents do not participate in the
education of their children.
In modular distance learning modality, the researcher believes that the
parents are the partners of the teachers to continue the education of the
learners. The learners will learn more if the parents have active involvement in
the learning and studies of their children in the modular distance learning
modality. This study aims to assess, strengthen, and increase the involvement
of Grade 3 parents of Bilogo Elementary School in the implementation of
modular learning modality amidst new Covid variant.

4. Scope and Limitation of the Study

The focus of the study is to assess the involvement of Grade 3 parents in
Bilogo Elementary School in the implementation of Modular learning modality
amidst new Covid variant.
The descriptive method of research was used in which the researcher
made questionnaire as the main data gathering instrument. This study did not
include the parents in other grade levels and delimited to private schools and
other public schools offering modular learning modality.
This study was limited to 23 parents of Grade 3 learners of Bilogo
Elementary School.

5. Significance of the Study

This study will be beneficial to the school heads, teachers, learners, and
parents, and future researchers.
To the school head, the result of the study will give them insights on the
level of involvement of parents in the implementation of the modular learning
delivery in school.
To teachers, the findings of the research will give them more
comprehensive direction to improve the involvement of parents in the modular
learning delivery.
To the learners, they will be able to have more enjoyable learning
experience through the help of their parents amidst of new Covid variant.
To parents, the result of the study, will encourage them to participate and
get involve actively in the education of their children in the implementation of
modular learning modality amidst new Covid variant.
To future researchers, they may use this study as a reference when
conducting the same study. It will give them an idea of the importance of the
involvement of parents in the implementation of modular learning modality.

6. Research Questions

7. Research Design
This study aims to assess the level of involvement of Grade 3 parents in
Bilogo Elementary School in the implementation of modular learning amidst
new Covid variant. To achieve the purpose, the researcher will employ
descriptive method of research utilizing questionnaire to access the level of
involvement of Grade 3 parents.
According to Medel (2013) descriptive method pertained to description,
recording, analysis, and interpretation of the present nature, composition, or
process of phenomena. The focus is on prevailing conditions, on how a
person, group, or thing behaves or functions in the present. It often involves
some type of comparison and contrast.

8. Subjects of the Study

The research study involves one group of respondents of Bilogo
Elementary School. There were twenty-three (23) grade three parents which
comprise the section who became the respondents of the study. No sampling
method was used in the study.

9. Data Gathering Instrument

To gather the needed information, the researcher uses questionnaire as a
tool to assess the level of involvement of Grade 3 parents in the
implementation of modular learning delivery amidst new Covid variant. This
served as the main tool to generate data.
Construction of Questionnaire. Prior to the construction of questionnaire, the
researcher browsed in the internet and read several references to gather
information about the study. The researcher submitted a draft of the
questionnaire to the evaluator for comments and suggestions. The researcher
makes sure that all suggestions are incorporated in the second draft. After
that, the researcher prepared a letter of request for the validation of

5. Proposed Interventions to Increase Parents Involvement

The proposed activities to increase the involvement of parents are
leaflets and flyers, home visitation, education campaign for parents
about their roles and responsibilities in Modular distance learning,
encourage stakeholders’ Participation, Project SAPP (School and
Parents Partnership): A Tool in Strengthening the Involvement of
Parents in Modular Learning Modality
1. Leaflets and flyers. These are informative materials that will help the
parents to become aware of modular distance learning and their
responsibilities amidst covid variant. The researcher believes that if
parents are aware of the information about modular distance
learning and the roles of parents in the education of their children
amidst Covid variant, they could able to participate more in the
activities of their children related in their education.
The teachers, with the help of school guidance coordinator,
and ICT coordinator may craft leaflets and flyers to be distributed
before the opening of the school year. The leaflets and flyers must
contain all the necessary information about modular distance learning
and the roles of the parents in the education of the learners amidst
Covid variant.
2. Home Visitation. This an activity wherein the teachers will go and
visit the learners on their respective homes. During this activity, the
teachers will check the progress of the learners and teach them the
difficult lessons. This is also the time to help the parents facilitate
learning at home. This is an opportunity to both teacher, parents,
especially the learners to meet their teacher in person. This is an
important activity to let the parents feel that the teachers do not
leave all the responsibilities of the education of the learners to
parents and they have partners in educating their children.
3. Education Campaign for Parents About their
Roles and
Responsibilities in modular distance learning amidst Covid Variant.
Information dissemination about the roles and responsibilities of the
Golden Gate Colleges Graduate School
parents during this modular distance learning is very important. This
activity will ensure that parents will have ample knowledge about
their roles and responsibilities in modular distance learning. Thus, it
will motivate them to actively participate in the activities of their
children.
Through the initiative of the school head and spearheaded by the
teachers, the school may post information in the different social
media platforms, Facebook page of the school and class group chat
to spread the information about the roles and responsibilities of the
parents in modular distance learning. The information will elicit
active involvement among parents in the education of the learners.

4. Project SAPP (School and Parents Partnership): A Tool in

Strengthening the Involvement of Parents in Modular distance
learning. With its accomplished action plan will enhance the
partnership of parents and teachers to help the learners improve
their academic progress. This will also an avenue for teachers go
reach out with parents and help them facilitate learning at home. It
will also motivate the involvement and participation of parents and
other family members to assist and help the learners grow, develop
and master their lessons amidst Covid variant. With the involvement
of parents and family members at home, the children will be more
enthusiastic and guided in doing the activities.
Moreover, involvement of parents in the education of their children
promotes parental engagement and brought major impact on the
academic performance, attitude of children towards education, and
success aand social development.
As cited in Mirazchiyski, Klemencic and International
Association for the Evaluation, 2014 suggested that students
whose parents take an active role in their school activities are more
likely to attend school regularly, achieve higher grades and test
scores, and continue their education beyond high school.

13. Conclusions and Recommendations

Conclusions
In the light of the findings, the following conclusions are drawn:
1. Majority of the respondents fell on the age 36-45 years old
female, high school graduate and regular or permanent.
