Parent Becoming a Teacher:

A Study on the Involvement of Parents in Modular Distance Learning of Senior High

School Students of Tipas Integrated National High School (Grade 7-12)

Chapter 1
INTRODUCTION
The COVID-19 pandemic has brought forth major changes in almost all scale areas
around the world. Thus, everyone had to adjust and cope up with the changes―including
students. Although some are on their way onto resuming with face-to-face classes, many are till
embargoed with different modes of distance learning. For public schools, most are undergoing
modular distance learning.
Consequently, close monitoring of students’ performance is beyond the ability of
educators. Hence, some pupils resort to having the assistance of their parents at home.
Cook, et al (2020) quoted in their study that “This physical closure led to a rapid shift to
remote learning which placed more responsibility for learning on parents and guardians. As one
of the major stakeholders in the education process, experiences of parents with their children
during remote learning are worth examining to inform future policy decision making.”
In the same research, it is also concluded that parents are having difficulty in “balancing
responsibilities, learner motivation, accessibility, and learning outcomes.”
In addition to this, in a study conducted by Ahmed, et al (2020) entitled “ Home Learning in
Times of COVID: Experiences of Parents, ” it is deduced that parents have adjusted to address the
needs of their children during these challenging times. However, it is still needed to adapt
learning essentials in order to provide the educational needs of children at home.
