CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY :

As the Covid-19 pandemic entered our country. Every sector in our country has been
temporarily halted their operations. These include Agricultural Sector , Tourism Sector , Finance Sector
, Education Sector and more. When the pandemic strikes. Many schools and universities halted the
face-to-face operation for the safety of the people involved. That happened on March 10 , 2020, as the
president released a statement on class suspension due to early Covid-19 cases. The students
immediately transitioned the mode of learning from face to face to remote learning. Remote learning or
distance learning was an alternative during those days to ensure that students could continue studying
without any personal interaction with teachers. The government released learning modalities during
remote learning. These include Online courses, Printed Handouts (Modular learning ) and
Television/Radio learning. It is suitable for kindergarten to Senior Highschool Students.
Senior Highschool is a part of Kto12 program that prepares a student before entering a college
course. Remote learning was mandatory, implemented. Senior Highschool students struggled to learn at
that time. Many students were forced to not continue their two year Senior Highschool program for the
reason of being afraid of learning nothing and wasting time from failing grades. Senior High School
performance was interrupted. Some of them increased their performance due to the flexibility of
distance learning. Some of them degraded their performance due to issues in distance learning like time
management and being unable to balance day-to day life with studying at home. Some of the issues
with remote learning is the use of technology as a tool in learning. Some students don’t have internet
connections . As a result, they depend on offline learning ( modular/tv/radio). It makes their
performance lower than the past face-to-face learning due to low distant interaction from the teacher
( chatting/videocall.

REVIEW OF RELATED STUDIES :

According to Dargo (2021) article, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, schools, particularly in the
rural areas, employed Modular Distance Learning (MDL) to ensure education continuity. This study
seeks to investigate the effects of MDL on the academic performance of learners and whether there is a
significant difference in their performance before and after the implementation of MDL. It is an
additional workload for working parents. There is limited teacher-learner interaction. Learners lack
socialization with other children and have no exposure to significant school activities but are rather
exposed to many distractions at home. However, simplification of modules accompanied by video
lessons and audio recordings, conduct of online mediations, neighborhood instruction, and home
visitations are recommended. To maintain the education of millions of Filipino learners and for every
school to still attain its mission and vision, which is to provide quality education to every Filipino
learner, the Department of Education implemented Modular Distance Learning (Dangle & Sumaoang,
2020).

To continue the education system described by the author, a modular distance learning system
must be used, which benefits every student who wishes to further their education. Every school has a
Modular Distance Learning (MDL) program that they implement for students. However, it’s really
complicated when it comes to MDL because every learner may experience a lack of communication,
social interaction, and activities in school. They may experience distraction when they are at home.
These sets up are often based upon cases from the investigation of the effects of MDL on Filipino
learners and for every teacher to still maintain this kind of set up, which will continue to teach every
student by limited teacher-interaction.

Ineffective Use of Remote Learning Tools.Other remote learning challenges include the
navigation and use of different technologies. Some people aren’t tech-savvy, causing them to use
certain hardware and software ineffectively. Some learning software require users to have specific
computer knowledge or skills. At the same time, you might need to use and integrate multiple software
and learning resources in your training ecosystem. Lack of technological know-how from either
instructors or learners can influence how remote learning is conducted and received. ( Darcy Dario ,
2022 )
Using remote learning tools was one of the biggest challenges online learning is facing. Some
teachers and students aren’t that good at operating technology software and hardware. Some online
platforms or software require a better knowledge and skills in order to run it properly. Some need
multiple resources to learn on how to operate online software. Remote learning requires more
instructors to teach everyone that isn’t tech savvy at all.

According to Bamoallem & Altarteer (2022) article, this study explores the impact of remote emergency
learning during the COVID-19 pandemic on students’ perception and acceptance of blended learning after the
pandemic. It applies the Community of Inquiry framework to understand the predictors and whether there is any
statistically significant correlation between the experience of remote teaching and students' perception and
acceptance of the blended learning mode in the future as a stage in the gradual return to normal life after the
pandemic. The study surveyed one hundred and fifteen students from female Saudi universities who are enrolled
in a design major. This change disrupted the lives of almost everyone, including people involved in educational
institutes. It caused a sudden shift from brick and mortar to emergency remote teaching, as this was the only way
to ensure continuing education during the pandemic.

The study on problems regarding the COVID-19 pandemic found that distance learning
had a significantly positive effect on students. It offers more net working opportunities, it saves them
time, and it helps students develop their technical skills. This type of education has gained increasing
popularity with the development of the Internet, as students can simply communicate with their
teachers and exchange materials over the net, even if they live in different parts of the world.
However, distance learning can have an impact on your mental health, and we all understand how
crucial our health is. The biggest difficulty for online learners is blended learning because of the
possibility of low motivation, infrastructure issues, and depressive symptoms. It has also allowed
students to continue their education during the pandemic. That's why they implemented this blended
learning.

High school students who were in distance learning during the Covid-19 pandemic suffered
socially, emotionally and academically, according to a study published by the Education Research
Association. The study compared students who studied remotely and their counterparts who studied in
person. Students who studied at home scored slightly lower on the “thriving index” than students who
went to school in-person. The differences were not great, but even small effects are noteworthy when
they impact millions of people, according to a press release on the report.

The unstabilized internet connection is one of the most recurring difficulties experienced by the
students in remote learning is unstable internet connectivity. Most of the time, this problem is caused
by the geographic location (“I live in a remote area, so, it is hard for me to find a stable internet
connection. It is hard to keep in touch to the events like Google meetings, Messenger discussions” -
Student 13). At Other times, it is compounded by the weather (It rains here that cause of lack of
internet connection. It Takes 30 mins to 1 hour sometimes before I open my Moodle. Sometimes I
climb in our rooftop in order To send my activities” -Student 21). (Erwin E. Rotas February 2020)
Unstable internet connections are one of the factors that affect a student's performance during
remote learning. Students living in a remote area or doesn't have good internet connectivity suffer the
5
most. They are the ones who're late at online classes and presentations. The article stated the
complaints of students 13 and 14. One of them needs to climb a rooftop to access the internet and one
of them lives in a place that doesn't have an internet connection. That struggle affects their
performance. Attending google meet classes, answering google forms and other online platforms seems
to be almost impossible for them.

One of the easiest effects of online education on children’s recovery is to improve learning
outcomes. Online learning provides students with access to a time and place for education. With online
courses that can take place at home or in a place of their choice, there is less chance for students to miss
classes. On the contrary, online courses provide access to students who may never have the opportunity
or the inclination to attend lectures in person. ( Emmy Michelle , 2021)
Aside from the struggles of remote learning. It also gives an advantage for some students.
Online education gives students flexibility on where they should study. Unlike in person interaction ,
Classroom is the only place you should sit and learn. With that flexibility , teachers are assuming that
students won’t miss classes. Online learning gives a opportunity for those people who can’t attend in-
person interaction.

The aim of the study is to identify the factors affecting students' satisfaction and performance
regarding online classes during the pandemic period of COVID-19 and to establish the relationship
between these variables. The study is quantitative in nature, and the data were collected from 544
respondents through online survey who were studying the business management (B.B.A or M.B.A) or
hotel management courses in Indian universities. Structural equation modeling was used to analyze the
proposed hypotheses. The results show that four independent factors used in the study viz. quality of
instructor, course design, prompt feedback, and expectation of students positively impact students'
satisfaction and further student's satisfaction positively impact students' performance. For educational
management, these four factors are essential to have a high level of satisfaction and performance for
online courses. This study is being conducted during the epidemic period of COVID-19 to check the
effect of online teaching on students' performance.

There are four factors mention in the article. Quality of instructor, course design, prompt
feedback, and expectation of students, these are the essential to have a higher level of satisfaction and
performance to help the students in online classes due to the covid-19 pandemic. The first factor is
qualities of the instructor. Qualities of the instructor should include the ability to understand and work
well with people, the desire to teach, competence in the subject, enthusiasm, motivation, ingenuity and
creativity, empathy, and mediation skills. The second factor is Course design. The focus of course
design is on putting together the optimal learning experiences for students, in an environment that is
supportive and appreciative of learning and intellectual development. The third factor is the giving
Prompt feedback to the students. The important of giving a prompt feedback is to helps a learner
deepen their understanding. After they have given input instant feedback serves to reinforce knowledge
by correcting mistakes, affirming competence or debunking misconceptions on the topic. The more
frequent and consistently you provide feedback, the better. And The fourth factor is students’
6
expectation. When the expectations of the students are achieved then it lead to the higher satisfaction
level of the student. However, when the expectations are students is not fulfilled then it might lead to
lower leaning and satisfaction with the course. Student satisfaction is defined as students’ ability to
compare the desired benefit with the observed effect of a particular product or service.

DEFINITION OF TERMS :
• Online Class (term) – online class is a course conducted over the Internet. They are generally
conducted through a learning management system, in which students can view their course syllabus
and academic progress, as well as communicate with fellow students and their course instructed

• Internet (noun) – a global computer network providing a variety of information and communication
facilities, consisting of interconnected networks using standardized communication protocols

• Remote Learning (term) – remote learning is the process of teaching and learning performed at a
distance. Rather than having students and teachers coming together in person, remote learning means
that students are distanced from their teacher and their peers.

• Pandemic (adjective) – occurring over a wide geographic area (such as multiple countries or
continents) and typically affecting a significant proportion of the population.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY :

This study was conducted to know what particular issue remote learning was facing. The study
was important in finding solutions and gathering relevant information for future reference. It will create
ways on solving the current issues that can be found in this study.

The study was essential to the various sectors as follows:

The Students
The students were the main topic of this research. They have been experiencing remote learning
for the past years until now. The study will open their minds about other struggles and hardships from
fellow students. The study will elaborate on the impact of remote learning on the sector of students.
7
The Teachers
The teacher was the second recipient of the findings of this research. The study will show them
what's happening outside their supervision during remote learning. They may make some
improvements and other various ways to make remote learning accessible and more flexible than in the
past years.

The Parents
The parents were also recipients of the study. Most of the student's parents were frightened
from their child learning nothing. The findings of the study will help them to create ways on how they
will support their child during remote learning. Either the support was financial , physical, or
emotional. The findings aim to make distant learning capabilities better than expected.

Statement of the problem

1. 1. What are the distraction to students' performance in their Remote learning?

2. Is there a differences of the Remote Learning and the Physical Learning, what are they?

3. What are the Benefits of the Remote Learning to all of the students?

THEORERICAL FRAMEWORK

According to the Article Of Angela L. Duckworth 2014 High School students who were in Remote
Learning during Covid-19 Pandemic. In times of Pandemic Learner has Begun Online Class And Modular Class to
avoid the Learner infected that Disease. All the Schools in The Philippines are undergo in these modalities They
Give the Opportunity to study At home with their Family. National Capital Region Or NCR Declare the General
Enchance Community Quarantine or GECQ and The Department of Education or DepEd to help the Learner to
access their Teacher In Schools and University. Learners should do Or ask on how they Expressed their
emotional Health in during their Distance Learning or Online Classes And Ask them how they Feel in Class In
this Study shown the Theory of the Department of Education or DepEd on how the Implement the Remote
Learning Modalities On this School Year 2022-2023 and How they Make sure All the Information and The Plan
to Make this Clear.

Former DepEd Secretary Leonor Magtulis Briones, Said That all The student Are undergo Online and
Modular Classes Until They Said that they Will Open the Opportunity To make It High Breed Classes And Now
we Called Remote Learning Modalities And New DepEd Secretary And Vice President Inday Sara Zimmerman
Duterte That We Implement The Full Face to Face Classes. All the Students Specially for Senior High School
Student are Having A difficulties on what They Do Before And After Classes. They should Be Part of these Study
Because They Have The Part Of the Performance of Remote Learning Modalities during these School Year and
they Thought that All Activities In Old Normal Are included here in New Normal Like Outdoors Activities and
what they Perform On this school year.

The Theory Of The DepEd Is To make sure that All student are Get to School And Learn with Teacher in
their Front not a Parent and Guardian to Help their activities that they Do by Themselves Most of The Student
are difficult in times Of Remote Learning Activities that they going to do all The Activities That be guide by The
Teachers.

CHAPTER 2
METHODOLOGY

For those students who are learning remotely, this chapter is explanation of the
research design, population and sampling, research instrument and validation, statistical
tool, statement of the research objectives and data analysis which will be especially
helpful in understanding the study.

RESEARCH DESIGN
In order to describe the effects of remote learning on senior high learners during
the pandemic, the researcher would employ the descriptive technique. Researchers who
use remote learning are asking questions, executing surveys, and conducting interviews.

SIGNIFICANCE AND AREA OF THE STUDY

This study Significant to the Parents, Teacher and Most Specially to the Senior High school of
Moonwalk National High School.

POPULATION AND SAMPLING

Parents and Academic Personnel Such as Students and Teachers are both Participants and
Respondents in this Study.

RESEARCH INSTRUMENTS
To get the appropriate data need, we the researchers will have three (3) questions that will ask the
respondents about their opinion on remote learning in times of pandemic; it will determine their
opinion about the remote learning.

STATISTICAL TOOLS
In conjunction with the mean to summarise continuous data, the study used the standard deviation to
get the average of agree/disagree and also what are their opinion about the remote learning. The
formula for computing the standard deviation is:

STATEMENT OF THE RESEARCH OBJECTIVES

• To perceive the learning and the teaching by enhancing their skills such as time management skills.

12
• To describe the strong/weak frequency of internet performance between the teacher, students and
parents.
• To define what is the importance of distance/remote learning in times of COVID-19 Pandemic.

DATA ANALYSIS
Data analysis used standard deviation to compare the average number of who's agree and disagree in
order to know what's the differences of both opinions.
