01 Sets
1.1
1 Define the following.
(i) Set
A set is a collection of well defined and distinct objects,
called its elements or members.
(ii) Subset of a set
A set S is a subset of set A, if every member of S is also
a member of A.
(iii) Proper Subset
If A is a subset of B and A is not equal to B, then A is
said to be a proper subset of B.
(iv) Power Set
A power set of a set is the set of all its subsets.
(v) Equal Sets
Two sets X and Y are said to be equal if both contain
exactly same elements.
2 List the members of the power set of the following
sets.
A = {3} (ii) B = { }
Solution: Solution:
Here, n (A) = 1 Here, n (B) = 0
So, n[P(A)] = 21 = 2 0
So, n[P(B)] = 2 = 1
(iii) C = {1,2} (iv) D = {2,3,5}
Solution: Solution:
Here, n (C) = 2 Here, n (D) = 3
2
So, n[P(C)] = 2 So, n[P(D)] = 23
=2×2=4 =2×2×2=8
4

2 Find the smallest number. by which 882 must be

multiplied so that it becomes a perfect square. Also,
find the square root of the perfect square so obtained.
Solution:
882 = 2 × 3 × 3 × 7 × 7 2 882
Here, 2 does not occurs in pair, So, 3 441
the required number is 2,i.e; 3 147
882 × 2 = 2 × 2 × 3 × 3 × 7 × 7 7 49
2 2 2
1764 = 2 ×3 ×7 7

3 Find the smallest number by which 1210 must be
divided so that it becomes a perfect square. Also, find
the square root of the perfect square so obtained.
Solution:
1210 = 2 × 5 × 11 × 11
2 1210
Here, 2 and 5 do not occurs in pairs, So,
the required number is 2 × 5 = 10.,i.e; 5 605
1210 2 × 5 × 11 × 11 11 121

4 8281 mango trees are planted in a garden in such a
way that there are as many trees in a row as there are
rows in the garden. Find the number of rows and the
number of trees in each row.
Solution:
Let the number of trees in each row
is x. Then, the number of rows is also x. i,e; 7 8281
x . x = 8281 7 1183
2
x = 8281 13 169
x = 7 × 7 × 13 × 13 13
x = 7 × 13 = 91
Hence, the number of rows and trees in each row is 91.
5 1521 soldiers are seated in a hall in such a manner
that there are as many soldiers in a row as there are
rows in the hall. How many rows are there in the hall?
Solution:
Let the number of soldiers in each row
is x. Then, the number of rows is also x. i,e; 3 1521
x . x = 1521 3 507
2
x = 1521 13 169
x = 3 × 3 × 13 × 13 13

6 The students of a class decided that each student will
contribute as many rupees to the National Relief Fund
as there are students in the class. If the total fund
collected is Rs.2601, Find the number of students and
the amount contributed by each students.
Solution:
Let each student contributes x rupees.
Then, the number of students is also x. 3 2601
x . x = 2601 3 867
2
x = 2601 17 289
x = 3 × 3 × 17 × 17 17
2 2
= 3 × 17
= 3 × 17 = 91
Thus, 91 students contributes Rs. 91 each.

9 The price of a Maths book is Rs.150, but Haris has only
Rs.115 with him. If he gets a discount of 20%, how much
money does he need to borrow from a friend so that he can
buy the book?
Solution:
Market price = Rs. 150
